The Christmas island crab had 2 predators that kept they're numbers in check. The Predators were the Bulldog Rat And Maclear's Rat. Both of which were endemic only to Christmas island and existed nowhere else on the earth. In 1887 a ship landed on the island to check on the possibility of starting a business by extracting rubber from the trees on the island, but the ship contained Black Rats which carried diseases that the 2 island rat species weren't prepared for and had zero immunity to. By 1902, Both the Bulldog Rat & Maclear's Rat were extinct. With them out of the ecosystem, the crab population exploded and never stopped growing. That's why there's so many crabs there on the island. - The Teacher

I am fascinated by the red crabs marching across Christmas Island near Australia. Also, it is surprising how many species of crabs I have seen from watching nature documentaries.
Added in. Pretty sure their cameras pick up almost no usable sound and a lot of the audio is careful foley work and sound design, minus specific animal calls and things like that.
I had the honour of meeting an entire parade of red crabs on the long stretch of sand at the edge of Chilika Lake. The narrow stretch of land that divided the lake and the ocean, was infested with red-crab population. I was walking on the shore sipping coconut water, as a red crab walked passed me. I found it hell'a cute, so I followed it. It went inside a burrow almost immideately. A minute later it came out to peep, whether I was still there or gone. I looked ahead, and holy moly, there were God knows how many (but I am guessing a close to million) crabs looking at me, in perfect lines of three, like the ones in a marching parade, staring back at me. They were looking at me curiously, peeking out of their tiny holes. It was up till the horizon, as far as my eyes could see. I throttled one step on the ground, with force, likely to scare them off. It worked. They went back in- all together. A minute later, they slowly come out again. I walk towards them and they quickly hide in their hidey holes within a blink of an eye. It was a wierd game that I was enjoying all by myself. Best summer ever. I was barely 15 at that time!

Agreed. I stopped eating crab meat because I find them too fascinating and endearing, and I always feel horrible for them when I see them and lobsters in live tanks at grocery stores.
