    For me, the quieter and more fuel efficient Yamaha is the better choice. For many things the lower voltage under extreme conditions won't hurt. For sensitive electronics, I would be powering them with a solar generator. This is a good video in that I am in the market for a generator and this really brought the Yamaha to light as perhaps the best choice.

    Hey - I was briefly associated way back with the original strategy team behind the Yamaha model you tested. This was done consciously and in fact its stated in the manual. ONE: this is meant for residential loads. TWO: most of the times it'll be used for electronics and standard devices THREE: 90% of all such residential devices like refrigerators, microwave, coffee machines have built-in power stabilizers. FOUR: motor stall / compressor stall will not happen.
    With these factors the strategy was to ALLOW as long as feasible running with heavy loads. I'd venture to say Yamaha can run at least 40% more load than Honda and longer. It'll cut off if voltage drops below 85. However, something you did not do and if you did would have been shocked. Even at voltages less than 105 you'll find its harmonics, frequency to be still at what it is if voltage was 124V. In other words the THD is still maintained at +/- 5% to 7% even under such extreme conditions.
    There's absolutely no other generator in the market today capable of doing this, at least sustaining this.
    In Japan there's actually a setting available and probably there in US versions too, except its not advertised. There's a jumper setting which when enabled ensures generator cuts-off at anything belong 109 V. This was done as there was few cases related to medical equipment which required extreme management of over/under voltage over everything else.

    I've been running the Ef200iS since 2013 every summer on my boat. It runs the AC, microwave, electric stove, and battery charger just fine - but I cannot run the AC and a high-demand appliance (stove, microwave) concurrently. Since it has a 12V powered refrigerator, that means it is always running the fridge as well when the battery charger is on. Never had an issue with it other than when the oil gets low in the middle of the night and I have to clamor about to fill it. This is a non-V2 model, and I don't have the handy little door on the side. It also runs almost everything on our RV as well - and will barely start one of the roof AC units if I turn everything else off first. Add to this a few times I've used it in the field to run power tools, and I'd have to admit it is the best portable generator I've ever owned - and I've had more than 5, including an older Honda.

    Wow, that voltage sag on the Yamaha is really something. I've been "generator obsessed" since we purchased our travel trailer a few weeks ago, and I'll be doing some testing of the Honda EU2000i vs the Wen 56235i and then paralleling those to compare the pair of them against the Wen 56380i.

    Thanks Johnny for the video; very interesting. As an engineer that has designed mission critical power supplies over the years, I would rate both generators as failures, however, Yamaha's performance was disturbing. Since one of the common household loads are induction motors, the output voltage from the generator needs to be well regulated. These motors are designed for a voltage range of 105 to 125 VAC. If the input voltage goes lower than 105 volts, the motor "slips", which will quickly overheat it. Therefore, the minimum output voltage from these generators under worst-case conditions, should never go below 110 volts. I say 110 volts instead of 105 because, with the high currents at max load, you will experience a few volts of drop in the wiring between the generator and load.
    Another problem with the way these generators are rated has to do with the Surge Rating - there is no published standard that I know of. Specifically, how long does the surge last? Generators typically have very little surge capability, whereas compressors, as used with refrigeration, have ridiculously high surge currents. For example, refrigerators usually have a peak surge current that is 10 to 20 times the Run Current that can last up to 5 seconds! Air conditions are not quite as bad at 5 to 10 times the run current. This is a current the generator must provide to guarantee a compressor start. Obviously generators like this can never supply the power required to properly start an RV A/C system but, they do barely supply just enough power to keep the compressor from stalling during the start but, you are risking damage to the generator and compressor, especially if a stall takes place, which is more likely to happen during hot weather. To improve the odds of the compressor starting, I recommend installing a capacitor start kit on the A/C unit, which typically drops the surge current by 30%.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Bill so much for the info.
      At some point I will install a capacitor for the AC unit but not everyone does so it shows a little more of a true test by keeping it stock. Mainly for the generator buyers out there.
      And I agree the generators should shut down by about 110 volt, which the bigger generators I test actually do shut off by about that.
      And 110 volts is NEC minimum from what I remember.
      Thanks for the comment and thanks again for watching 👍🏼😀

      How many people on TH-cam have advanced degrees. I find your statements to be fallacious.

    • @billharris6886
      @billharris6886 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@TheMickeymental HI Brad, I'm not sure I understand your point but, here is where I am coming from. The degree thing doesn't matter, I am just trying to pass on things I have learned the hard way with generators in hopes I will spare someone the same bad experience. I have been designing electronics for 45 years, with most of it used where someone's life depends upon it so, I'm sensitive to the fine details, such as testing under worst-case conditions. So, I'm sorry if I made it too technical. What I was trying to convey is; consumer grade generators are spec'ed using a perfect load, such as an electric space heater, which draws exactly the same amount of power at all times. Motors are just the opposite, they require huge starting currents to get them up to speed.
      Here is a scenario where the generator rating system will get you into big trouble. Let's say there is a hurricane forecast to come through your town so, you go out and buy a 900 watt generator to run your refrigerator just in case. The power consumption label on the frig says 5 amps maximum (which is 600 watts) so, everything looks good according to published ratings. You even go a step further and measure the actual power the frig pulls when it's running - only 120 watts; "piece of cake". As the hurricane comes through, it wipes out the power all along it's path and afterwards, the estimate to restore power in your area is 10 days, So, you fire your your new generator and plug it into your frig. The generator speeds up quite a bit after you plug it in but, you assume this is normal, nothing to worry about since all the ratings are within spec. 10 minute later you discover the generator is smoking, not from the engine but, the generator head so, you shut it down. As you had back into the house, you catch a wiff of an overheated motor smell as you pass by the frig. Some days later when you finally get power back on in the house, you discover your frig runs for a few minutes, then trips out every 5 minutes. Calling a repair man out to service the frig, he finds the compressor is bad. Later a detailed search for the failure proved that the frig tries to pull 20 amps (2,400 watts) the moment it tries to start. The generator only puts out 700 watts continuous, the 900 watt rating is actually a maximum surge rating (all portable generators are rating by Surge Watts, the continuous rating is usually 25% less). So, when the generator was connected to the frig, there wasn't power available but, the generator kept trying, putting only 60 volts. The frig compressor didn't have enough power so, it stayed in a stalled condition, dumping 500 watts of heat into its windings, as well as the generator's windings. This scenario is based upon a Harbor Freight 2 stroke generator, a higher quality Inverter Generator would probably cut off the output before damage occured.

      @@billharris6886 Many people on the internet vastly overstate their education and accomplishments. There is not any possible way to support their conjectures. They use these claims to give more credence to their opinion, but more often than not the writings give them away. And your writing was not too technical.
      The hurricane scenario is not a generator problem, but a sizing problem and a misunderstanding by the consumer regarding basic electricity. And yes manufactures fudge the numbers.
      One issue I have with your statement is "mission critical.'" These referenced machines are not purchased for milspec, they are purchased by the consumer for short term situations. Although I have heard of people using them as a main source.
      I have seen several TH-cam videos in which the Honda was placed upon an oscilloscope and tested and stayed within spec even while surging. Was the test valid? It seemed to be, but this is TH-cam.
      The Yamaha states it will surge for 30 seconds while Honda claims 30 minutes. The key factor is the size of the engine. Several sites have individuals who claim to have 15.000 hours on the Honde EU2000i, but this is purely anecdotal evidence.
      Thanks for your reply.

    I have the Yamaha model and it's been pretty great. I only got it for power outages (I live on a small island with a fragile electrical grid and we get hit by tropical storms, hurricanes, etc) to run 2 energy-efficient light bulbs, 2 floor fans, two laptops. The last time we lost power, for some reason the cable line was still working and I turned the tv on and we had entertainment! I always download vids to watch in these situations, so old SNL was the ticket. That setup lasted at least 12 hours on one tank. I have not tried to run the refrigerator on it yet. If we lose power for too long, then I'll have to test that out for sure. The manual says not to operate it in snow or rain, but I've started it and ran it in a tropical storm with lots of rain. I also have not grounded it. I probably should look into getting that done. The unit is on my roof patio. It really is the only place for it. I tried my ground patio, which is walled in with a 10-foot wall. The exhaust fumes seemed too much, so the roof patio seemed safer. Oh, I run a single 110 industrial cable from the unit on the roof down a wall to the ground patio area and into a window. From there I have a splitter running maybe two or three extension cords. I should also look into the power fluctuation issues your review discusses, especially for electronics. I need to learn/practice maintenance on it. Hope that helps!

      You probably get good power because it is coming down hill from the roof and not fighting gravity so plenty of power for you. 😅
      This is but one video on the net about generators and what they can and can't do so my advice will not be seen by 99.999% of people out there. Fridges test there ability but I would say to anybody who is on the one hand concerned that there fridge won't start and on the other that they can't afford a bigger generator, an easy fix is to purchase a 50-70 litre portable/mobile fridge - Weaco, Engel, etc but there are plenty of cheap Chinese models that won't empty your pocket. They will work on even small generators and can keep your most important perishables in tact during an emergency power outage.
      Good enough video John but my tip would be slow down, take a breath, speak slower, relate which item/device/unit you are referring to before giving out numbers, remind me regularly what you are testing for and why. 👍
      In this video, was there a "load" in the microwave? Don't know but I do know they shouldn't be run while empty. Even a glass of water will suffice.

    It's funny this video showed up in my list but last week I was without power at my apartment thanks to a tree branch, sort of. That & the power co wouldn't hook a new line until the meter box was replaced. Anyway for a few days I rented a gen from home depot. It was the Honda version. So while I was home I used it to run the freezer & keep my aquarium going. It also powered my washer & pc a few times. It went through some fuel yeah & wasn't super loud but wouldn't say quiet either. Still, it worked. It has an economy mode which might be ok for just a bunch of lights.

    • @johnnysweekends
      @johnnysweekends  ปีที่แล้ว

      The economy mode works to throttle the engine up and down as power as needed.
      I’d say running a compressor that turns on and off eco should be off so the generator has plenty of power and doesn’t get dragged down by the starting amps of the item. But on eco with the lower idle the generator will be quieter and burn a lot less fuel..👍🏼
      Glad you stopped by 👍🏼😀

      Well most everything is made in China but as long as they still keep the Honda tough with longevity and durability built in it it'll still be good. And with the 2200 watt Honda with a 121cc engine producing 18.3 amps starting Max it's above most of the inverter portable generators out there. except for the Cummins Onan 2500 Watt for right now. But the Cummins Onan 2500 watt portable inverter generator no one knows if it'll with stand the test of time for longevity and durability it's not been out long enough to prove itself yet. I was going to buy the Cummins Onan 2500 portable inverter generator but I wasn't sure if it would last being it's a Chinese 98cc engine more amps than the Honda 2200 watt. So I just chose the tried and proven Honda 2200 watt inverter generator for now. If I just used an inverter generator sometimes I would go with one of the cheap Chinese 80cc models. But when you want to run RV rooftop air conditioners or more and off grid the Honda 2200 watt should hold up for me I hope. I had a 80cc cheap Chinese inverter generators and I burned up the inverter board. It didn't last 6 months being used every day off grid. luckily they exchanged it for me with a new generator. but after thinking things over I want to sell it I would rather had my money back and not lose a dime but it's too late. If I was just using a generator on the weekends or for camping or sometimes here and there I would go with the cheap chinese generator 80cc engine.

    First, not every single thing made in China is crap, despite what politically driven sorts would have people believe. Chinese lower labor costs is what drives most of it, many items being built to a price for people wanting to spend less. Just like tools and other consumer items, we have choices, buy cheaper and hope they fill the need and last or buy higher priced, higher quality items and expect that they more than cover the need. It's everyone's choice. I had a Honda eu1000 generator for a number of years used for light camping and supplying some lighting around the house during outages. It was a sweetheart, ran like a top and very quiet but wattage limited. Sold it to a friend and bought a Kipor 3000 watt inverter generator (Chinese). Kipor is a large company but even though I saved some shekels over a Honda model it just doesn't have the quality feel that the Honda had. It doesn't start and idle as readily or as smoothly but handles loads well. It will start and run our 15,000btu AC on our 5th wheel but just so. To do it again I think I'd save just a little longer for a Honda.

    Hello, I bought an EF2000 a few months ago for my DJ/outdoor movie business and was disappointed. The power conditioner in my equipment (Furman M-8DX) showed voltage fluctuations rapidly going up and down between 121 and 131 volts. I called the dealer and was told this was "acceptable" because it was in the 3% range. I have 3 other Yamaha inverters (EF2800, EF3000, EF6300 and a Honda EU3000 Handi all of which produce a stable 120-121 volts all day long. I owned several other Honda EU200/2200's and the big EU3000 over the years and always had stable voltage. The EF2000 was the only generator that did this. Rather than fight back and forth with the dealer and Yamaha, I made the executive decision to sell it on the Marketplace for 95% of what I paid for it. It's a shame because I really wanted to like it and felt it was a better "value" than the similar Honda.

There was a pretty good load on there probably in the neighborhood of 10 amps. The Yamaha model is still sold. The following is a list of pros and cons of both generators.
    The Yamaha rated surge capability is for 30 seconds the Honda is for 30 minutes. Another video purports to demonstrate the Honda reaching 2,267 watts on overload. He did not test the Yamaha.
    th-cam.com/video/txcY1ZirNHY/w-d-xo.html
    Overloading these generators and exceeding their surge capabilities will cause the sine wave to distort causing the power output to become extremely dirty. This also may cause the inverter to overheat and possible damage could occur to the unit and the powered device.
    A key difference in the two generators is service and parts. Honda’s service centers are ubiquitous while Yamaha is not as prevalent. There are also a plethora of videos on TH-cam showing how to repair the Honda’s. The aftermarket accessories for the Honda are commonplace.
    There are videos on TH-cam showing the Honda EU2000i powering a 15000 btu RV a.c., whether these videos are accurate is unknown.
    Touted by Yamaha when first introduced was the placement of controls being in the side of the unit. Owners began to realize this was not the optimum location since while transporting the units the placement was more prone to damage to the controls. Yamaha must have listened the newer model YAMAHA EF2200IS has the controls on the end, but it still uses the 79cc engine. This Yamaha can be found for about $120 less than the Honda.
    My apologies if I repeated any of the information in your video and thank you for your time and effort in the production of this video.

The volume starts going up after break in and the difference between a new unit and a used unit is significant after about a year. It's an obvious difference. But it's related to the hours used not how long you've owned it. To say it must be abuse is an ignorant assumption. It's simply hours used.

We just have to take the best constructive type and utilize it accordingly. If the video is to long and slow people don’t watch which makes the view duration go way down and TH-cam will not promote it which then less people see. Even if you are kinda looking for it.
      So you try to find the right balance to make sure it’s seen, and people get something out of it that’s helpful to them in making a decision. Which sometimes is challenging even for seasoned creators as we all try to change things a little to make sure it’s balanced. So criticize away.
