  • On this day in Black history, Marcus Garvey, an organizer who ushered an era of Black radical movements, was born in 1887.
While growing up in Jamaica, he was inspired by Booker T. Washington's message of Black self-sufficiency through economics and education. It would lead him to create the Universal Negro Improvement Association in 1914, and it would grow into one of the largest and most powerful Black nationalist collectives in history.
In 1918 on his 31st birthday, Garvey began publishing the Negro World Newspaper, an outlet that would reach hundreds of thousands across the world with his ideologies of Black militancy. One of his top ventures, the Black Star Line, was a shipping line to transport passengers back to Africa. Garvey's Back-To-Africa movement was for African Americans to return to the continent and create a nation there.
“Garvey's story is woven into the DNA of Black liberation becoming an inspiration of civil rights leaders from Nelson Mandela to Malcolm X,” said Charles Blow.

This is ok, as a start. Let's have a follow up on Garvey, a series, discussing his teachings and their effect on the black community, then and now. It's always ok, to acknowledge someone's birthday, but along with that, let's honor their contributions, as well

Garvey was not a militant, he was a nationalist. This presentation on Garvey is twisted and problematic from beginning to end

Yeah, calling him a militant was a misrepresentation of Garvey and the UNIA

Marcus Mosiah Garvey Jr. was born on August 17, 1887, in Saint Ann's Bay, Jamaica. His father was a stonemason, and his mother was a domestic servant. As a young man, Garvey travelled and worked in several Latin American countries before relocating to London, England....

We can't fully talk about garvey without mentioning his "friendship" with a yt supremacist and his xenophobic views towards black Americans when they didn't view and identify themselves with the continent that sold some of their ancestors into bondage....
