Everyone totally slides by the fact that on guitar IS Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics... and their collaboration is seamless. Great interpretation and execution of a classic!
I’ve loved Daryl Hall’s music since the beginning. His voice has only gotten better with the passing of time. Great guitar work too! His musical genius is profound!
@@slammajamma5435 Totally agree. I love everything that comes out of Daryl's mouth, but the original version of this song will never be bettered IMHO, even by DH.
Absolutely, I hate people who say things like that. Someone else said the Sarah Jarosz cover of a U2 song was better than their version. Please! Daryl Hall is wonderful and does a lovely job with this song but as somebody previously stated, you ARE talking about Annie Lennox and you are so off the mark. Be a fan of Daryl's but go listen to the Eurythmics version and learn what a great artist, in her own right, Annie is. Besides she Scottish and as everyone knows, that by itself is gold. Och aye!
Daryl, back in the 1970’s I was booked to shoot your show with John Oates. I was the photographer for a Music Magazine in Portland, Oregon. What a night. My images were perfect along with your show and music. To this day, I live on a small Caribbean island ( since 1984) and listen and watch you on TH-cam. I LOVE your home sessions SO much!!!!! Thank you ♥️🙏🏼🎶
Daryl’s tone on the piano is magnificent & Dave’s subtle and flawless guitar embellishments make it sound like it is, in fact, raining. I knew they were both good musicians, but I had no idea each of these guys were this masterful.
What makes this a unique rendition is how beautiful the song remains when stripped back to just two instruments, as compared to the orchestra in the original. That's the strength of great songwriters like Annie and Dave. Though it doesn't hurt to have Mr. Hall's soulful voice belting out those shadowy lyrics. Look forward to hearing the upcoming fruits of their latest collaboration!
Is it me or does Daryl seem like the coolest person ever? Have heard several stories of him just hanging out by the campfire and jamming. A true music lover
So true. Darryl is such a consumate musician and the man from the Eurythmics guitarist is an excellent accompanist to the pared down version of the original song. 🤟
I'm 64 years young having grown listening and watching some of the best musicians of the past, and I have to say I excluded Daryl in the first go around. But I will say unequivocally you sir are a gem. May you continue blessing those that listen to you.
Brother I’m 36 and I adore most of the music from this era. I had older parents 1955 and older brothers 1975 and 1976. This reminds me of growing up. This music always brings me back to when I was about 8 years old. We used to have a great radio station where I live that played 50’s (Frankie Lyman, Lou Christie, Roy Orbison, and Sam Cooke for examples) to what they called current classics (ELO, REO Speedwagon, Yes, and Pink Floyd) I miss that music so much. I think it takes a while for it to root (loves grows where my rosemary grows) but after you yearn for it.
So from the beginning, abandoned luncheonette, beauty , bigger, silver etc….this voice has captivated and endured when many slip aside…never surprised by what I hear….truly music to me ears…
I am TOTALLY blown away. This is what they're talking about when they talk about a singer making a song his or her own. I know the lyrics by heart, but this song? Hardly! AND acoustic, AND with Dave freakin' Stewart on guitar! Total, total genius! EDIT: Okay, on second listen I'm picking out many more similarities to the Eurhythmics' original, but the soul that Daryl brings to it really shines at the end. I can imagine this as a quiet encore, and then coming out of the concert hall to a dark, chilly night just after a rainfall, the air full of moisture and stale cigarette smoke.
I always loved these lyrics, my favorite from Annie & Dave but I love this arrangement so much. Daryl's voice seems to have added this tender & softer layer to it & it connects so well with Dave's guitar playing. It's hauntingly beautiful, passionate as hell & just exquisite....I love it so much!!

Actually, not everybody. Dave is an amazing artist and why Tom Petty and he collaborated. The cream rises to the surface .
Last night in Nashville Dave Stewart came out and played this with Daryl. Todd Rundgren opened the show. Very cool.
Wow!!! Dave Stewart… and an interesting version x
No we don’t.
Daryl is over 75 yrs old here, singing that. Only difference I hear from the 1970s to this is his voice seems a bit bigger now.
