For my 70th Birthday my daughter got us two journals. She said we should each write about a memory we have about us for the next 70 days and then go out to lunch and share. I was so excited about doing that. It was like reliving the memories. When we got together we read the memories to each other, and I noticed she had some I hadn’t remembered. Of course she didn’t remember the ones from when she was a baby and toddler. We traded journals then. This was maybe my best birthday present ever.
That was an incredibly good idea. My mom is now gone & I wish we had done that. The 2-way communication & exchanging is the best part of your idea!!! I will do it now with my daughter! Thank you!
I also have a journal for my child. Started it when I found out I was expecting, and have written in it since. Will give it to him when he has his first child.
Loved looking through your journals! I have a small Word journal. As I learn a new word I write it and the definition in. A favourite I learned from you Rachel…dormiveglia - Italian noun - the space that stretches between sleeping and awake. What a great word! Hugs and blessings, 🤗❤️🇨🇦
Sometimes us creatives make things for other's to enjoy. I make journals as well. I am not really a writer, I use my journals for lists and ideas that I would like to try. Sometimes we just need to create and it's nice when other's enjoy what we make. It always nice when someone sees what you have created and it puts a smile on their face
Rachel, you did a wonderful job explaining how to use journals. I like to try different techniques and make different kinds of journals. My family doesn't quite get it, so sometimes I question myself as to why I do this. But you know what, every time I'm feeling down, I take a few of my journals off the shelf and sit and have a look and tell myself, look at how beautiful these books are that are one of a kind and that yes, I am a journal maker!
I am Stef; I fall asleep and the hubby keeps watching. The next day we go back and re-watch the ones that I missed. Funny how that all works out. Brilliant idea to have journal to write to someone special. This would be wonderful for my grands.
That took a burden away from me feeling guilty about my unfinished journals. I enjoy the process of creating the journal, or art book, or hybrid. I don’t write in mine either, because the pages I create express my thought processes and mood I was experiencing when I made them. Thanks for sharing.
Hello Rachel, I’m a knitter so I made a journal to keep the yarn labels in with the pattern name, needle size, type yarn and notes of size, etc. also sample of yarn use, where yarn was purchased. I include the date of cast on and the date I finished and the name of the person or organization they were made for. This has been a wonderful memory of the many items I’ve knit and gifted. I also made a journal to record the slow stitch project which included the prompts for each month, notes about each page and any ideas that I want to try.
I try to do a garden journal for what I've planted and where. How the different varieties do,what I've harvested. I sometimes include how may eggs I've collected from my girls.
The Italian journal you are in the process of making is beautiful!❤️ Thank you for the many journal ideas. Very informative and helpful. I am also not a journal writer but love the history, the papers used and the many creative ways to make journals
Love all your suggestions, Rachel 😊 What a special journal for Lulu 💕 I am not an eloquent writer so I like to print off song lyrics and write notes off to the side... Thanks for all you share, Rachel ~ you're awesome 🌷 Blessings ~~~
I look forward to the list of ideas for using junk journals. I guess my favorite use is making them and the fun of creating--then looking back at them and remembering. I have done a travel journal and one that started as a December daily, but morphed into a "whatever" book, with collage following Margaurite Miller prompts, documenting some specific days, saving an old piece of 1940s newspaper that was the backing for piecing quilt blocks, and also saving a letter and some cards from my grandmothers. I don't know if this has been mentioned, but the idea book's cousin is a sample book. I like both of these types of books because it's easy to forget techniques and types of pockets and other ephemera. It's nice to have a place to go for inspiration. Sorry for the long reply; I get carried away with junk journals. Thank you, Rachel, for all the inspiration you provide to all of us.
I so appreciate that you always seem to keep the folks who are new to journal making in mind. I've put together a couple of simple signatures but am still trying to find my way in this new-to-me world. 😊
I have done the junk journals only for myself but I do not write anything in them, they are only made for looking in them, for finding joy and remember the moments in which I have created. I like also doing altered books from books that inspire me. I have so much fun watching at your journals, so inspirational, just gorgeous 😍 ❤️ 💖
I use a journal each year to document my flower gardens. What I planted, how they grew, where I expanded or changed a garden, the weather, photos of the flowers, 🐞bugs, 🕷 spiders, 🦋 butterflies, 🐦 birds and my cat🐈 (who thinks he's my helper) in the garden. I like to put little quotes, prayers and such in too. It really just documents my year in a personal and beautiful way :)
I use my journal for documenting everyday life so that I can use this to make my MIR (Month in Review) at the end of the month. Thanks for sharing this, as a journal maker I get this question all the time.
I, too, love making them. My own journalling happens in fits and starts, but I think that's the beauty of them. They don't have to be regular unless you want that. Like you, Rachel I have many different journals on the go: multiple collage journals, multiple art journals, a dream journal, a gratitude journal, an ideas journal, a journal just to document all the life changes that are happening for me this year (surgeries, etc), and a reading journal (recording what books I've read and thoughts about them). On my list to make for myself is a recipe journal (I made 1 each for 4 friends, but neglected myself) and a sentimental one for hubby - inspired by your comments in this vid!!! Thank you for another fun watch. Seeing a glimpse into your journals is inspiring.
I made a journal for my handmade bear collection. I have included ephemera pertaining to bears, photos, quotes, and a page devoted to each of my bears (who made it, when it was made, the bear's name, and a bit of a story about the bear). This journal will go to my niece when she receives my collection. I really love all of your journals, Rachel. They are lovely and have your unique artistic style.
Thank you so much, Rachel for sharing the beautiful journals. Inspired by you, I have only just started making them and have found it a little addictive :)
These are lovely and well purposed. I have a small personal journal that I use for my to-do list. It helps to have something pretty to look at when I am listing have to do things rather than want to do ones.
Would love to see your birthday journals I have so many cards mothers day, Christmas, get well , birthday would love a tutorial on making these if that's possible?, tfs Rachel. ❤
What a lovely idea about writing to your kids (or anyone special) in a journal. Lulu is going to have a beautiful collection of journals one day. I’ve said this before, but I love your style. Your journals are so eclectic and beautiful. So interesting to leaf through and hear the crinkle of all those gorgeous old papers. So happy you share with us!
HI RACHEL❤❤ YOUR JOURNAL AND VIDO ARE THE REASON I HAVE STARTED DOING THIS , I JUST LOVE HOW YOU CREATE AND TURN ANYTHING INTO A THING OF BEAUTY AND I JUST LOVE YOUR JOURNAL YOU HAVE DONE, YOUR TALENT YOU SHARE TO OTHER ARE INSPIRING AND WE THANK YOU VERY MUCH SO PLEASE NEVER STOP BECAUSE ALL OF US CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOUR NEXT VIDO YOU DO ,
I just love that you video every day, i look forward to them so much!!! I enjoy making journals also and never write in them. It's fun to look back at them and see how they've changed. And......my husband does the same thing to me about watching tv!!!! I think they are are alike in that respect!!!HaHa!!
Some people write favorite Bible verses, favorite quotes, lists..., household items, memory keepers, password keepers, anything you want to write down in them is fine or just use them to look at. They can even be used as notebooks for note taking!!!!! Just have fun with them!!!!!!!
Hi Rachael, I did a journal when I moved from my birthplace. I was born in N.Y. and the area that I lived in has a lot of history. I have managed to research the history and started to put it all together. I’ll leave it to my grandson some day. He’s a Coloradan. I hope to do one of Florida also, and it’s history. Ponce de Leon landing in St. Augustine, and the many Native Americans that lived where I lived like the Calusa Indians. Just some ideas…Hugs
I love your beautiful journals and i also love making them too. My fav journals are my family genealogy, art and gardening ones. I was inspired last year by your travel journal so that will probably be my next project to start when we return home from holiday. Thanks again for your inspiration x
What a wonderful video... you made me think about how I am journaling, like you, not much or I don't finish it... but I do like to write down thoughts that someday I hope my children will enjoy reading... I like to read back over them as well, and it mostly brings a smile to my face... thank you so much for sharing this one... really enjoyed it...Blessings...
Thank you for this video. I don't journal at all but I love making the books. I have always done some form of craft ,crochet, ,knitting, decoupage, card making, but a few years ago I just lost my desire to do anything. Then late last year I discovered this wonderful world of "Junk Journals" and have to say I'm crazy for them. Love all the papers, trims and laces etc but felt a bit silly making journals and not actually writing in them myself.
Hi Rachel! Just catching up on your videos after vacation. Great video on what journals can be used for! Yours are so lovely and always inspiring. Thank you for sharing! 💕💖Hugs!
20:13 Love love to see you create a journal like this … it’s a stunner and vividly inspired me in the pages shown in this super video. I love everything you do, yet in those pages there’s a vivid wildness to your chosen imagery that is just gorgeous.
Really enjoyed looking at your on going journals.. always get inspiration and learn from watching your. Especially since I am left handed and so helpful when you are stitching pieces. CIA.
Loved this video Rachel. I am a sporadic journaler (is that a word?).......very hit and miss. I do have a journal of herbs and one to keep favorite quotes & short poems in. I do have one for life events that I'm bad about keeping up and take one with me when traveling. Other than that, I just can't resist a lovely junk journal and love making them as well. So, I have a lot of "just because" junk journals and I just love looking through them. Oh, and a gardening journal.
I was thinking Pam’s bird journal, and once I hand did a planner with pages in between. I loved this video, and Arne and Carlos got me started wither ideas books, Thankyou Rachel, great video❤️
I sort of like to think of some of my journals as Pinterest in paperform... I collect magazine clippings (photos) and such for ideas I like for my garden, for my newly bought camper (how I like to decorate it), for recipes and such. I also have a journal for journal ideas :-) I want to make journals for my boys and I have a journal for daily writing, but I don't restrict myself to have to write every day. I started journaling when I first got ill and it gives me joy in hopefully getting better whether it being writing my thoughts or worries or my joys and special moments. I think once you get going the ideas comes to you and all I can say to people who are thinking about junkjournaling; just do it! But beware.... you'll be hooked haha xxx
Thx for this. I dont use them. I make them. and they become conversation pieces. I give some of them to women friends also as something to flip through and touch.
I'm not too much into covering pages in writing either. I think the best pages are make it up as you go along! I have an art or everyday journal to 'play in' and one my grand daughter made me is full of little keepsakes she sends. Usually have a Christmas jounrnal. Thank you for sharing.
Very good ideas about what to use a journal for. I really enjoyed listening to you today. I would never have known that you had a headache. I hope you are doing better.
Journals are a look into ourselves - they provide hidden insights. The Unexpected Gypsy goes through what she does with journaling. She feels they give her messages. I think the messages for me come in the colours or whatever I am feeling. The other message is what sort of style and expression I like. Soft and gentle for me for example. Soft pastel colours not too much on one page, although my journal has a lot. I have art journals but I have put one of my little paintings in my junk journal which was lovely to do
I have stage 4 cancer. I have 4 kids, I am working on a journal for each one with letters for them to read on… happy days, hard days, birthdays, special occasions, and all the many things I love about them and I am proud of them for. 💕
I have an ongoing (very junky) mini-midori in style journal about the City where I went to College and later worked in, and basically always frequented.. As I make it I use the cards and space to talk about why this or that place has been included, how it is significant to me.... One of these days my kids will look and learn some new things about me :-) .
I have a journal for my granddaughter that I don't get to see. Not my choice other people's. In the state I love in grandparents don't have rights. I write in this journal all my thoughts and feelings for her and one day I hope they give it to her. ❤️
I understand very well...At some point her curiosity will lead her to you..Keep writing..and if you must..entrust this journal with a neutral friend or family member to give to her at age 18..or whenever she is ready..Everything will be okay..💚
What did you do with your birthday cards journal that we all sent you? There were incredible things of great creativity! I have often wondered about that journal and if you finished it. I think you were going to have to make a second one to continue with them all.
This was a wonderful video. There are SO many ways to use a journal. One thing in particular caught my eye. That's saving school/art work by your children and making a journal out of it. How would you construct us as there are so many pages that I wouldn't want folded in half like a regular journal. Can you show us how to make a full size journal so an 8 1/2 x 11 wouldn't be folded, but you could see the whole page? I've heard of tab binding but that seems like an awful lot of work to bind pages one by one. I would love to know how. The video's I've seen are all perfectly straight copy paper size bound by glue and a spine. That wouldn't work for school papers. I'm hoping that you will do a video on this and show us how to do that. Thanks Rachel. You're the best!
What about making one for birthday celebrations. then when they turn 18 give it to them and they can see how much they're grown, you could include handwriting samples and art work.
I see you added photos in your travel journal. Do you have a small printer you take with you and hook up to your phone? If so, which one do you like? I'd like to get one.
I can understand why the junk journals are fun and creative to make, but the pages are too beautiful to be hidden away in the books. That much work should be enjoyed in a frame on the wall.
I have a journal of quotes, my daily journal that started when I got my Apple Watch. I had planned on just keeping track of my steps and progress of that kind of thing. I know write a bit and decorate a bit too in it. Then I also have a journal I accidentally started after realizing bad words on a bookpage. I turned it into my inappropriate book. Just for me but things we would want to sell because of the naughty things. Some of my friends now send me things that they accidentally ended up with. The most recent was a army man in the 1940s in his underwear saluting. (Nothing too bad but you wouldn’t add it to your journal for sale)
I have a Garden journal. Things that worked or didn't. Pics of areas I really enjoyed.
I’m currently making a garden journal for my bestie, who is a keen gardener 😊
I use one of my journals as a reading journal, keeping a log of all the books that I read and writing a few quick lines about each one.
Thank you so much 😊

The page you said you loved so much…the one in the quilt covered journal , would make the prettiest fabric
Thank you so much!

Very helpful. I’m not a journal writer as well, your ideas will help and I do like the challenges but haven’t participated yet .Thanks Rachel
Thank you so much 😊
I have an ongoing (very junky) mini-midori in style journal about the City where I went to College and later worked in, and basically always frequented.. As I make it I use the cards and space to talk about why this or that place has been included, how it is significant to me.... One of these days my kids will look and learn some new things about me :-) .
That sounds like a great idea!
I want to make one and keep QUOTES in it.
I keep a journal of books I read
Love this . Who is Amity? Where you get the wonderful washi ?
Amity Bloom . Thank you so much!
I have a journal for my granddaughter that I don't get to see. Not my choice other people's. In the state I love in grandparents don't have rights. I write in this journal all my thoughts and feelings for her and one day I hope they give it to her. ❤️
I’ll pray you see her some day soon, then you can giver the journal yourself.♥️
I understand very well...At some point her curiosity will lead her to you..Keep writing..and if you must..entrust this journal with a neutral friend or family member to give to her at age 18..or whenever she is ready..Everything will be okay..💚
That’s so sad you can’t see her! She will love your journal!
What did you do with your birthday cards journal that we all sent you? There were incredible things of great creativity! I have often wondered about that journal and if you finished it. I think you were going to have to make a second one to continue with them all.
They are packed away. I finished 3 or 4 and have another 2 to complete. Some things were too bulky to put in a journal.
Yes they were.
I have the same dilema with Lulu's artwork. I would hinge the pages together. Thank you so much!
What about making one for birthday celebrations. then when they turn 18 give it to them and they can see how much they're grown, you could include handwriting samples and art work.
Wonderful 😍
I see you added photos in your travel journal. Do you have a small printer you take with you and hook up to your phone? If so, which one do you like? I'd like to get one.
I have a sprocket printer that I had taken with me
Rachel who does the hoardy journals please? Is it Pandora's?
Yes Pam did one.
Which one is Pandora's hoardie journal please?
Sorry you are under the weather. I think you need a nap. Interesting video....linda
Thank you so much 😊
I can understand why the junk journals are fun and creative to make, but the pages are too beautiful to be hidden away in the books. That much work should be enjoyed in a frame on the wall.
👍👍👍

Good morning. 🌞

That’s so funny 😆! Thank you so much 😊
