  • On this episode of the Television Affair, we look at one channel and two networks. The first is a Gaming centric channel called The Game Network. The second... well this network split, one half went one way, the other went another way and JUST as I was making this video the channel was saved - Ideal World relaunched last Friday. The final is a network of three music channels created by Sky. Scuzz, Flaunt and The Amp.

    Ah I remember the first time I saw Guru Larry on Game Network, glad to see he's still going strong on TH-cam some 20 years later!

      Yeah I came across his channel and was like.. wait.. that's him? He has transferred over quite well from tv to youtube considering the channel was pretty much one of those outlets that were youtube before it exsisted

    I remember when The Amp launched - it seemed like they only played a handful of videos, Frontier Psychologist by The Avalanches and F.E.A.R by Ian Brown were on frequent rotation

    Ah yes, Game Network, I had a mention on one of their chat shows once!
    Now for some Fun Facts: The satellite used to transmit Game Network once went out of orbit meaning we lost all video output. Eventually they used the border with the text messages coming in so that they weren’t essentially outputting “dead air” but the video window remained black. Then it ended up going full screen and basically became a chat only channel until it came back on air fully. Took a couple of months I think.
    Scuzz was pulled (sorry more like fell) off air at around 9am on the day of its closure. The music video it was playing was Girl All The Bad Guys Want by Bowling for Soup about half way through it “fell” off air to a black screen and pulsing continuous test tone.

      Probably one of the bosses at Sony in a strop and upon hearing the music shouts "and you can turn that off aswell!"

    Mentioning Game Network, you should totally do a video about video gaming TV, covering every aspect of it.

      I am looking into it... I remember watching games world and I think another games programme on there... Violet Berlin comes to mind... but yeah. My Son has been on about doing the computer channel /.tv and I'm currently looking at Ginx

    I remember the later days of Game Network. It was such a shoddy production but that made it endearing. They played the opening cutscene of Munch's Oddysee a lot when they had nothing else to show. (Though the cutscene does remain impressive, even today)

      I liked it when they described how to play a game like the audience had never heard of a video game before.
      “The up button makes your character go up. Left makes him go left…”
      Me and my mate used to get a kick out of that.
      It was good to have on in the background though and see footage from old games when TH-cam wasn’t really a thing or doing much of that anyway.

    I worked for Ideal World for much of the TV channel's life. You may not know that the studio you can see them unpacking boxes in during this video actually survived the fire and was still there at the end (albeit mostly empty!)
    It's being gutted again now to move all the equipment to TJC headquarters in Feltham. You might see the sets pop up there in a few weeks' time. No idea what is going to happen to the premises in Peterborough but popular opinion is that it will be sold and become houses.

    • @jonkasonic
      @jonkasonic  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wow, that's pretty cool considering that fire in the pictures looked like the whole thing went up. I'd have thought much of the original kit was getting on a bit if it's been there since the launch. It sounds like a lot of people were proud of it being in Peterborough, makes a change from somewhere like London.

      @quizmastergary 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@jonkasonic It certainly had longevity beyond what a lot of people thought it would. The studio infrastructure was replaced in 2019 so most of the equipment was from that time (although not that well suited to the job!). Quite impressive really when you consider it was put together on an industrial estate in the middle of Peterborough.

    I would pronounce Aurelius as "oar-ellie-us". Me and my boyfriend always have a joke about shopping channels, whenever I watch one I'm reminded of him saying "in three simple installments" or "wait, there's more".
    Good god, I remember being off from school or it being the weekend and watching Scuzz as an emo (then I became a metalhead, obsessed with Slipknot and Black Sabbath) fourteen year old back in 2017 and falling head over heels for 30 Seconds to Mars and their "The Shining" inspired music video for The Kill. I miss Scuzz, I was going to write a retrospective piece on Scuzz and how important it was for people who like alternative music to the mainstream, it was for the goths, punks, metalheads and the people who didn't give a fudge, to quote Limp Bizkit.
    Phew, sorry for the essay! Keep it up Johnny!

    • @jonkasonic
      @jonkasonic  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ha, yeah I would pronounce it that way too, I didn't because my brain didn't compute the "i" :D
      Yeah I would sit in the hope of that in infomercials... they would be right near the end and then "But wait there's more, if you buy this you'll get another, along with the full... and a ... absolutely free" and carries on.
      I could bang on about how radio's biggest mistake (and I guess TV too) is to not have a proper variety of different kinds of music, but the indie and rock scenes are always really strong and raw, but nobody's really getting in on that - you'd never be short of something new, but I rabbit on enough in the videos.

    I don't think music TV ever took off in the UK quite like it did in America. MTV was a phenomenon in the states, but here it was just a thing. There was a market for it, but a more passive one. I don't get why some music channels, such as MTV and 4Music, have content which is wholly unrelated to music. If a channel supposedly dedicated to music cannot support itself in that format, why bother branding it that way? Just make it about something else. 4Music became just a Channel 4 Extra kind of thing, and MTV became reality TV. I'm not sure about where the future of music TV channels is heading. The heyday is past, and I've noticed that the once always exclusive to pay TV MTV has now branched out into multiple niche channels on free streaming services such as Pluto TV. Seems to me like they're trying to scrape money from anywhere they can get it, in a hand-down-the-back-of-the-sofa kind of way.
    One standout music channel for me, was The Box. But not for good reasons. I have never understood how the flawed request service via premium rate calls ever took off. It's content on-demand... which you have to queue for. Erm, what?! If you had just three callers ahead of you with a request, that was a ten minute wait for your song to play. And the queues were never anywhere near that short. You could easily have had to wait at least an hour after calling. Which begs the question, why bother making a request? Why not just wait for someone else to request it and sit there waiting at their expense? I remember watching at a friend's house, back in the late 90's. He wanted to show me a Weird Al video, but someone was jamming the selections with multiple requests for the same boyband song over and over. It was playing out on an endless loop. According to my mate, they did the same thing every night. Why would anyone have ever wasted money doing that? It cost about £1 per call, spend the money on a video recorder, request it once, tape it, and you've got the added bonus of now owning a video as well as a copy of the song. The Box,; a very weird success story.

      That happened once to me and my mates when we were watching it one slow summer afternoon, the same Vengaboys (ugh!) song played at least 6 times in a row, it may have been 8 times come to think of it. We though the channel had glitched and kept it on just to see if it would infinitely play lol

    Was there ever an actual English version of Telechat or was that just a Chriddof sketch?
    Also, vis a vis the Game Network, if only Hewland International were still going, they'd be a media empire in this day and age!
    Also, Paul Lavers, he was everywhere, I think I first saw him on Lifestyle and was probably on local in-vision continuity.
    Let's face it, the shopping channels will very much end up being bought out by Alibaba, turn them all into AliExpress TV, surprised China haven't done it already!
    Sky should have kept Power Station going! Never had BSB so never saw it but BSB seemed to have the quality while Sky had the quantity back then.

    • @jonkasonic
      @jonkasonic  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah I am pretty sure Telecat had at least 1 series in English because I remember watching it on The Children’s Channel, but I can only find 1 episode of it. I also recognise the series 3 opening so maybe they did do all English dubbed.
      Yeah, he was an Anglia itv in-vision presenter, and much of which seems overnight, QVC and some of the other shopping channels. It will be interesting if the shift in shopping channels happen soon because the audience must be getting on a bit now.
      Powerstation or something like it would be a breath of fresh air if its done right. Especially with audience interaction and social media

    Game network was actually quite decent if amateurish. I'm sure if it kept going in the way it was it would have became more professional. However once they started going crazy with the chat angle they started doing entire shows which was just chat, and it was BORING.
    If they kept the chat at the bottom and just kept running shows at the top it would have been fine.
    I remember having it on in the background most days, it was just fun.
