- Can YOU guess these strange British English expression? 🇬🇧
In this video, I wanted to teach you some VERY British English expressions. However, instead of simply giving you the phrase and an example, I thought it would be FAR more interesting to ask people from various countries if they knew or could guess what these strange, weird and wonderful British English expressions mean!
If you want to sound more like a fluent, native English speaker, try and use some of these phrases :)
let's see if they can find out!

HEY! did you know any of these British English expressions before you watched the video? Also, which one is your new favourite? 😁
🌹
Only the 4th one, and my favorite is "I'm gobsmacked"
I would hope so, considering I live there
"Bee's knees" is old timey American, too. Also, I knew what "Muppet" meant.
I'm a Brit, so I knew all of these except dropping the kids off at the pool and going out on a lash.
Brown bread-- being dead
Muppet-- idiot
Bee's knees-- cool, excellent, high quality
Drop the kids off at the pool-- go to the toilet
Gobsmacked-- Shocked
Faffing around-- Wasting time or doing something unnecessary
On the lash-- Go out and get drunk
Cool! Some cockney slang. I heard some of them before. My favourite one is to drop the kids off at the pool. The slang expression for that in Russian (translated literally) is to lay a larva. 😀
Yep some cockney indeed as it can be a little strange haha! Lay the larva! Love it

What is the difference between ( I don't care) and (I don't mind) ???
Can you say that please?
A bunches of Thank for teaching advance English. I am learning English by you. Be happy always. 👍👍
"I'm going drop the kids off at the pool"
Kkkkkkk... can't stop laughing!
Do you have anything similar in your language?
@@InstantEnglishUK
Yes, we do!
Translating from portuguese...
"I'll make number 1", "I'll cut the monkey's tail off", or, "I'll drop a clay off" among others. At least in Sao Paulo (Brazil), I'm not sure about Rio de Janeiro or in Portugal, maybe they use different expressions there kkkk...😄
Almost all of them (besides gobsmacked) are new to me. But I really like the first one (brown bread). Never heard it before and would never be able to guess its meaning in a million years 😂
Hello AJ, really glad you loved the video and hope you are well!
@@InstantEnglishUK hello Chris 😊 of course I love your wonderful videos! They are getting better and better. I really appreciate your efforts for us 👏
I’m hardly learning English😂 these expressions are something very new to me. Thank you though 😊

Now you know 😎
@@InstantEnglishUK Yerp lol
That “ poor kids” kill me instant!!!🤣🤣🤣
Haha great guys 😁
As a Brit this is so funny
Glad you enjoyed
These all make sense to me as an Aussie - I suspect many ex colonies like Australia, NZ, South Africa would know these. The only one I didn't know was brown bread, but if you had told me it was rhyming slang, I would have guessed it.
Nice 👍
Superb👌 I like so much British English ☺
Thank you, where are you from?
India, Tamil Nadu
@@InstantEnglishUK India, Tamil Nadu

Cheers Mark

Thank you very much 😂
You’re welcome
Brown bread!! horrible expression.
But curiously when Chris mentioned it in my mind I saw a corpse but consciously I didn't thought in a dead person.
That at the toilette I got it.
Nice one
It's cockney, innit?))
Yep 👍 the first one

Is there anything similar in your language?
@@InstantEnglishUK Yeah!
@@InstantEnglishUK actually I'm from India & and I speak Hindi, do you know Hindi ?
Chris, I'm into the expression: Your shoes are the bee's knees
Any others?
@@InstantEnglishUK okay,I promise, I"ll also use brown bread, muppet and I'm going to drop the kids off at the pool. Your videos are great and I could listen to your voice long hours.
Isn't when you say I'm gobsmacked it'd mean that you're speechless
It could be, you are speechless because you’re shocked
@@InstantEnglishUK gotcha, Chris.
No spaniards left in Barcelona😅
Nope 👎
Not easy. Thank you. Quite challenging, especially he is brown bread = he is dead
It’s Cockney rhyming slang so only used in the London area or perhaps other southern areas of England 🏴
My name is Dr I'm from South Africa in Nigeria 🇿🇦🇿🇦
Should have explained that The Bees Knees means "The Business".
That’s another slang
Number 4. Is pooping 🤣 if am am not wrong
Yep 👍
Are you coming in Nepal this year??
If you subbed
This isn’t bullshit!😂
Pardon?
I prefer say “the second one” (el número dos, en español) than “drop the kids off at the pool”. I imagine my (future) children, too unpleasant
You got any more in Spanish that I should know?
I like u man
Thanks mate
as a british person nobody uses these lol
False: as a British person too, the only two that are old now are brown bread (although areas of London still use it) and bee’s knees.
I'm British and I've never heard anyone say "I'm going to drop the kids off at the pool" when they mean I'm taking a dump.
I am British and I have heard loads of people say it
Me : saving them and imagine if someone asked me about them I'll answer instantly 😌😂!
I’ll come to your city next!
