Adding to the tips: there is no punishment for missing classes so if your sim is really behind with skill building, just let them stay home and learn. If then their performance is low, boost it with the paper or assignments
First tip for Uni. Always set your Uni hood to Forever Autumn if you have the Seasons ep. This means that they can get the learning boost for skills right the way through their Uni careers. And since it's an in-game feature to be able to modify the seasons, it's not even cheating. Second tip for Uni. Just send them to class. Sending them to class alone is usually enough to get them good grades, and they have an autonomous obsession with researching and assignments anyway, that it's better to just let them do that since it boosts social with anyone seated, reading or watching tv in the same room. I only do term papers if they roll a want for it since it tanks most of their wants for a performance boost that isn't necessary. Caveat - if they're in their final 24 hours before their exam and they have never attended class or researched and their bar is in the bottom third, THEN is the time to get them to do their term papers for the boost it gives. Third tip for Uni. NEVER let them miss their final. It will always put them on academic probation. Just make sure they're fed and they go, and so long as their class performance is across the line and they meet the prerequisites to fill the bar, they will make the dean's list. Uni smarter, not harder. :)
I don't think missing the final automatically puts them on academic probation. In my experience if the performance bar is full it will knock their grade down to around a C. If you look at the code for Pescado's college rampage macro (part of the Macrotastics package), it will always write a term paper first, which suggests that Pescado found the term paper is the best reward for the time spent. If you fill up their needs then they should be able to knock out the term paper in one sitting. In terms of the other study activities I think, group research at bookcase > assignments > solo research, with the caveat that I have not looked at the code myself. I am not sure if going to class is better than just studying or doing assignments at home. Overall college is pretty easy, given you get 72 hours per semester. With Cyjon's mod to reduce college to four 48-hour years (eight days in total) rather than eight 72-hour semesters, it is more difficult, but still easily manageable. I like that mod, because without it college lasts 24 days (plus the three optional days post-graduation), which is almost as long as the entire adult life stage.

thanks!! I've been to London once but apart from that my English education at school had always been Cambridge-based, so we mainly had British English classes :)

You have a convincing British accent for a native Spanish speaker, have you lived in the UK?
