Is the declaration that the sweetheart is a person supposed to imply that Marvin objectifies women because he isn't attracted to them? I heard somewhere that his "love" of Ms.Goldberg is because he sees her as the ideal woman which will awaken the attraction he has been waiting for. So my guess is this song is about the damage he did to his highschool sweetheart's self esteem. He rejects her sexual advances and makes her feel like she isn't a person. Not sure.
i think you're right. in the 1985 recording of this song there's added lines where the sweetheart says "i want to hold him but he's not alive," "i want you to want me badly" and "put me onto your bed, not a pedestal." the way i read this, he's rejecting her sexual advances and her insisting that "he's a person" = "he must want me" or "it's okay for him to want me" but he's telling her that's ridiculous. personally i think part of the reason marvin is so set on ms. goldberg is also that she doesnt like him so HE doesn't have to be the one rejecting her in that situation. but you're right bc as he rejects women he simultaneously objectifies them. i think her saying "i'm a person" means that she has sexual needs, but also that marvin doesn't see her as a "real" person worth caring about. cause of course this is coming from a character who's like, dubiously a figment of adult marvin's imagination who he hasn't given a name. i would argue that the whole trilogy is about marvin learning to care about other people (not just himself) and this is when he's at his worst.
