    Great stof. I never heard a piano teacher use the word sucks. It gives a clear idea of what to do and not to do. 👍😘

    Idea #3 is the concept that I think really brought this video home for me. I've been looking for videos like this for a while now; thank you for putting this kind of info out there!

    Great lesson Willie ! Not that easy to find piano lessons that are really shortcuts to improve easily our learning process. Can't wait for another Learn Piano without the Bullsh*t !!! George from Argentina

    Awesome, Willie! During the last private lesson, when you played some Dr. John pattern over a rumba drum track I suddenly could feel the perfect match between what you played at the piano and the drummer’s playing. This made me understand that at the piano I perceive the rhythmic pattern of each hand separately, but not really the rhythmic pattern resulting from both hands. How can I develop this understanding? Thanks for your help!

      Hey Michèle! Great question. I'll try to answer that in part 2 of this series for you

    It would be awesome if you could make a video about basslines ! And how to add approach notes too (chromatic and diatonic).

    Excellent video. As an inspiring improv pianist this is a gold mine.
    All the dislikes are from the people who don't switch direction mid-scale :)

    OK! I have my scales, arpeggios, and intervals down. Now I know what to do with them. Chord progressions continue to be a problem, but for the same reason I don't improvise: because I'm not doing it. Time to sit at the keyboard and kill some fears...

    A DIAMOND CUT, POLISHED GEMSTONE LESSON.
    US OUT HERE NEED TO GO THROUGH THAT PROCESS ASWELL.
    THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS. AT THE KEYBOARD HEAD KNOWLEDGE IS LESS IMPORTANT.
    YES CONTINUE. THANKS .

    Excuse this beginner question but how do you get a B flat Maj 7th from A CD F. I thought you were supposed to construct a chord by starting with B flat go 4 half steps for the third (D) then go 3 more half steps for the fifth (F) then 3 more half steps for the 7th (A flat). What course of yours can I take to make sense of all of this. Thank you in advance.

      michael Scaturro That is called rootless voicing. You are playing the M7 (A) , 9th (C), 3rd (D) & 5th (F) of the BbM7

    Learning scales is like learning what each of the mechanisms do that make up a car but, never being shown/told what one can do with that car!

    Hitting wrong notes can be a pain but, hitting a wrong note can lead one to a new variation. That's a bonus!

    I have trouble "thinking" what to/how to in the beginning. Having a starting point is for me a great start. I don't need any one to walk the road for me but having some one to point in which the direction where my target is located is always a good place to start. Shown me 1 and I will make it 100..... eventually.

    Hi, appreciate the video - quick question re the chords (as posted below), can you clarify the construction, please? They look like inverted F6 and EMaj7 to me, but not sure. Thx. C

      Hey Christian, I'll be adding these chords to part 3. Be sure to subscribe and you'll see it when it comes out.

    Willie, are you suggesting that learning a scale in a fragmented manner is an improvement on first learning a scale in the "traditional" manner?

    • @jazzedge
      @jazzedge  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I explained it in the video, but to reiterate, just learning a scale up and down is NOT enough. The entire point of the lesson is the point out that just playing/learning chord-scale relationships is not enough in improvisation. Do you need to know scales? Of course, I say it all the time. However, you need to be MUSICAL with your scales and spend just as much, if not more, time devoted to making scales musical through rhythm, dynamics, articulations, phrasing, motifs, etc.

      We went through a website change in the last 2 weeks and updated a BUNCH of stuff including the navigation. when you login now as a free member you can see right at the top of the page what is available to you with quick links.
      Also, if you need help, I answer support tickets, so if you want to have the convo with me directly (rather than a TH-cam comment which I only see now and then) it is best to email me at support AT jazzedge.com

    He Willie first thanks for this video now you explain this it kinda feels it should have been obvious some of this but you helped a lot I haven't done vid 2 yet.
    Second I noticed that at this point this vid has 340 views and part b has 240 views. Not sure if you track watch time on your vids. Oh make sure you put these Vids in a playlist TH-cam will suggest the others maybe increase your watch time. Now on to part two

    Rule number one is to play a chord tone on a beat otherwise you sound like a kid in a fog.

    More click bait; scales suck for soloing! Rule #1 know your scales. Come on man.

    • @jazzedge
      @jazzedge  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FindleyOcean you should watch the entire video. Of course you need to know your scales. But there is a better approach. But hey, if you disagree be sure not to watch my stuff! All the best! My lessons are about getting to the meat faster and making it easier for everyone to be able to express themselves through improvisation.
