If you're looking for more Gorillaz, I think their album Song Machine Vol. 1 is the best of their more "modern" works. Thematically, it's less cohesive than their first few, but it balances excellent features with Damon's vocals really well, and feels like it really strives to make fresh, experimental instrumentals on each track.
Some little tid bits: Produced by Danger Mouse, around the same time DangerDOOM’s Mouse and the Mask was being made, hence the feature I believe Damon Albarn’s very much into the Trip-Hop influences, especially the first 2 albums (Gorillaz/Demon Days), Martina Topley-Bird who featured as the second vocalist on All Alone did extensive work with Tricky (ex-Massive Attack/Wild Bunch, the pioneers of T-Hop), and she also featured on a couple of Massive Attack’s songs too (Babel from Heligoland comes to mind, Damon also features on that album too) Their debut self titled features production from Dan the Automator who brought in Del tha Funky Homosapien as they had been working on Deltron 3030 at the time, his verse on Clint Eastwood being one of Gorillaz’ most iconic tracks along side Feel Good Inc with De La Soul There’s just insane amounts of branching out to check out music subcultures, artists and the like, I got into MF DOOM because of his feature here.
Just got this on vinyl its probably their best. After this you got two options of either the self titled which is harder to get into but has some experimental stuff there or Humanz which has a more modern sound some cool concepts which I love.
Smags vibing to the songs is 100% my jam, on Last Living Souls, Kids with Guns... At the beginning of O Green World (One of the best songs in here)... With November Has Come, after the hidden plot twist LOL And the face at 24:11 with D.A.R.E. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I got goosebumps when you went "Oh my Goood" during the chorus of Feel Good Inc. What a perfect song... I was hoping that you would love Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head, it's such a good song (too many great songs on this one, there's a pattern now). The narrator here is actor Dennis Hopper, btw! I'm in the November club, too. Remember, remember... 😁😁😁😁
Yoooo have you done any Cocteau Twins yet? Can’t remember seeing a vid which honestly is impressive, I would’ve thought you’d be bombard w people recommending it especially back during your Slowdive/MBV reactions. Heaven and Las Vegas is usually the go-to intro album
One of my favorite albums of all time. Some of the greatest singles of the 2000s came out on this album, and then the 3 songs that close the album just leave you with such an incredible ending. Amazing, amazing album. If you were going to continue with the Gorillaz discography, I would go to their debut self-titled album first, just to finish out what is considered the classic run. It's very different from the rest of their discography but incredibly diverse. The albums after Plastic Beach never quite reached the level that the first three albums did imo, but there's still some good stuff in there too.
Gotta make sure I show my love here after watching on Patreon. Just wanna say I appreciate you my guy…the consistent content is amazing dude. I REALLY want to see you check out some solo Panda Bear or more Animal Collective. But some others for your consideration: The Mars Volta - Self Titled Brand New - Science Fiction Bright Eyes - Cassadaga Circa Survive - On Letting Go mewithoutYou - Brother, Sister 🍻
Idk if you'll read this one since I'm almost two weeks late but "November has come" with MF DOOM is not only one of the best MF DOOM songs ever, it is very eery and holds a lot meaning in retrospect because DOOM passed away on the 31st of October. He welcomed November.
The album originally had transitions between some songs (DH/FGI and the last two ones)and those made my day before the spotify version had these removed. You can still find them on the HiRes version from tidal and HDtracks, or any rip of the CD you can find. The 2017/2018 vinyl also had this if you're into that, found a 2018 one still new last year.
The GO! Team is so underrated. A friend of mine opened for them in 2007, and it was one of the craziest shows I've been to. I thought the floor might actually collapse. And randomly, Jimmy Fallon was at the show.
huh. I also thought the narrator on "fire coming out of a monkey's head" sounded very familiar. I looked him up and he's the reporter in Apocalypse Now, which I re-watched earlier today. funny coincidence.
If you like Martina Topley-Bird's vocals then you need to check out the album "Maxinquaye" by Tricky. It's one of the best albums of the 90's and it has a dark, dank ethereal vibe to it.
I love how you too felt that El Manana was the optimistic track... I felt the same till I watched the music video and now it always makes me want to cry :P
As a whole, I prefer this album to Plastic Beach, but the songs on Plastic Beach that I like, I really love. Feel Good inc, and El Mañana might be my favorites. This album is more reminiscent of Blur, and I think that's why I prefer it.
Hey man, I'd love it if you reacted to At Action Park by Shellac. It's awesome, and a perfect intro to the genre of noise rock. I usually don't leave recommendations, but Steve Albini, the band's frontman just passed two weeks ago, and I figured I'd try and spread the word about how great his work is. He also produced Surfer Rosa by the Pixies, which I know you've reviewed, as well as In Utero by Nirvana. Love your stuff man.
Demon Days is one of my favourite albums. I love Damon Albarn's voice, and he did some amazing stuff with Blur. To The End and The Universal are really beautiful.
Smags, i think you'll really like Spilly Cave's discography. His Spilly Cave album is a great start, but his singles, like "Jerry", "Minutia - Acoustic Version", and "Lone Rider" are also a great listen.
Definitely worth checking out Blur for 1990s Damon Albarn goodness (particularly Parklife, Blur and 13), but I'd also throw in a recommendation for The Good, The Bad and The Queen (2007), which is another stellar project of his.
yo smaggs love the content and your thoughts and insights on the albums, you should listen to an mf doom album ( madvillainy mm food and operation doomsday are all very good) unless you have already
I can't believe no one has recommened their self titled debut. It's a bit different from their more modern works but one could argue it's their best album.
DoYaThing by Gorillaz is one of their best songs I've heard but I don't think it's on any album. You've got to check it out though, especially the 13 minute version!!
Hey! the singer of gorillaz is also the singer of Blur! they recently released an albumn called 'The balled of Darren', could you react to it? Its really good :)
Gorillaz consists of 2 people, Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett. Damon Albarn does the music and Jamie Hewlett does the visual arts. You should go check out the band: "Blur", which Damon founded in 1989, they're a Britpop/Altrock band, and have been a staple of 90s music.
Sadly, most of their albums after Plastic Beach are considered mid..although I personally thought The Now Now was pretty good and you may like it considering its more synthpop. Song Machine might also be worth a reaction considering it’s considered the best of their post-Plastic Beach discography.. Hope a reaction to the first album is coming eventually as well!
Some people will say Humanz is not great but i entirely disagree and really recommend it its an insane experience and having listened to demon days is great context for the album as well
Everytime i listen a gorillaz album i feel like it's my favorite one haha. The last two tracks of this album remind me a bit of 666 by aphrodite child (and a bit some part of primal scream). If you've never listened to 666 you might like it, it's an incredible narrative album !
Gorillaz did their thing with this one, such a creative album. Suggestions: Third Eye Blind - Self-Titled (would be a great listen with summer starting) Sun Kil Moon - Ghosts of the Great Highway (if you like the alt-country vibe, has some of the best songs in the genre) clipping. - Visions of Bodies Being Burned (would love to see some more experimental hip hop on the channel)
He recognized the laugh, but honestly quite surprised Smags didn't recognize Feel Good Inc. At the same time tho it made for a good first reaction to it!
