The Frozen Ghost Ship Octavius

- A tale coming from as far back as the mid-1700s of a ghost ship covered in ice containing a grizzly fate for its crew. But is there any truth to this story at all, or is is just more wives tales.

You should sell the better safe than sorry design as a sticker
*Please increase your videos volume by 20% if not more*
20% should be fine, though..
We can always turn our volume down, but we can't increase our max volume on phones.
an urban legend traced back to 1828 ... that alone makes the tale kinda cool ...
... no pun intended ... ;-)
First the return of maritime horrors after a lengthy hiatus, now the Creepster! Heck yeah shipmates! 💀
Which channel? Sorry I'm new
@@BruceKraftJrlucky you, so many unwatched videos to listen to, great videos on this banger of a channel frfr
Let’s not forget to mention that he played a coast guard Alaska themed arma op with jay raptor that was an absolute acid trip
The Octavius is one of those legends that's both interesting and creepy. A ship with it's deceased crew completing the infamous Northwest Passage posthumously is certainly something that was a page turner then as it is now.
A Northwest passage attempt in 1760's? Pure inspiration- uh, I mean "Insanity!"
Yes!
Wasn’t the world still an ice age in the 1700’s? I heard something about how brutally cold the coast of New England was on average, it could get into the negatives.🤔😳
The version I always heard involved the ship getting blown off course and freezing somewhere in the northern Pacific, then making the Northwest Passage just by drifting on its own, which sounds far more reasonable (even if currents would likely make it impossible.)
@@lunartears6761the world wasn't in an ice age the way we think of it, but there was like 50 years of WAY colder than average weather. Also it does get into the negatives in new england, when i lived there it got to -16° Farenheit once
@@user-ConnorKaroThompsonanytime there is ice on the poles its technically an ice age.
I live in the midwest an about 5 years ago we had a February where the high for the month was -12f.
While the route they took doesn't make much sense, the corpses could have been a result of flash freezing. If the captain's log detailed surprisingly warm air there could have been the possibility of a sudden storm or hurricane. Falling rain pulls cold air with it due to friction, and as colder air sinks, the downdraft is further enhanced. It's a stretch but scientifically plausible. Glad to have another video from you, an excellent telling of an old tale.
Yeah weather can be weird, and expecting it to last was a terrible mistake.
As for sinking.... one note about ice-bound ships is that the ice will badly damage hulls. Simply letting it thaw will result in the ship "leaking like a sieve" before sinking rapidly. It won't sink while icebound due to the ice holding it up. But when it melts... nope.
Even if thats the case that is a hell of a bad luck strike. I mean just freezing to death slowly is bad enough. But it's possible but not that easy to occur. It's more likely the crew on the herald got up to something on board and made up a story.
@@marhawkman303similar things to happen to concrete when ice gets up in there, the “pores” already present are forced further open and cracks are exacerbated by the ice repeatedly thawing and refreezing
I hope Antonia Graza gets it's own Halloween video one of these days when October comes around. Even if she's fictional, but she deserves a video.
Maybe an April Fool's video.
Maybe an April Fool's video.
If the Antonia graza was a real ship, I wonder how long her career would have been?
The Creepster returns! About damned time, save mah boy from Cleveland, Ohio!
"bub" - I like the cut of this ghost's jib
We get a ghost ship video AND The Creepster this month?? Best Halloween EVER. Also very well written with interesting info as always
The most unbelievable part of this is guy going "let me find the northwest passage on my way home". If that's factual, it's goddamn hilarious
Had to ring the notification bell.
I'm not much of a mariner, but I enjoy your tellings. Haven't heard any in a long time until this popped to my feed.
Welcome back "The Creepster"!
"Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities. Truth isn't."
- Mark Twain
Oh shit one of my favorite bands is called Ghost Ship Octavius, had no idea it was a real ship lmao
Return of the Creepster! Even though our host may hate him, his visits never fail to entertain.
I am so glad you’re back! I watch a lot of ‘maritime disaster’ channels but you’re my favorite one by far!
This story really had me Frozen in fear, I mean it sent a real Chill down my spine. Just a very Chilling tale
Let that be a lesson to you
Mmmm… I don’t know …. I thought it was pretty COOL….
Sounds like the inspiration for two star trek episodes, The Naked Time (TOS) and The Naked Now (TNG). In both they find a ship full of frozen people.
I was wondering where the seasonal spooky videos would be uploaded. Hopefully you got more of them coming before the month's end
( It did not happen :( )
I hope this is a sign that more content is in the works. I’ve been really hooked on this channel
I am glad to see that The Creepster has returned!
I am so glad they brought back the creepster! I love his character! 😂
Good to see you again Creeepster can't wait to hear this new story
So glad you guys are working together again, maybe for one Halloween special do you think you guys can do the paranormal activities on the SS Great Eastern hehe
He’s back ladies and gentlemen, he’s back!
Our fearless captain has returned!
Creepy stuff, being late October, perfect timing. Great job!
The Creepster is the best, hopefully next year's one is on the Bannockburn, it's the most legendary ghost ship from the Great Lakes
That was also a famous battle involving William Wallace
@@StrangeScaryNewEngland Wallace was long dead by then, Bannockburn was won by Robert the Bruce
@@whensomethingcriesagain You are correct, I had the two mixed up. Thank you! (Also, Robert married into my family (Ross).)
Hope at some point you could cover about the Mysterious Disappearance of the SS Pacific
The only supposed clue about her destiny was a Message in a Bottle found years after she vanished
My best wishes Matey
Octavius is one of my favourite tales, Grandpa used to tell me that story
I've never thought of ghost stories as a real thing, but the hopes and fears of the teller. A "what if" of what could happen in a worst case scenario. The Octavia is a nightmare spoken in the morning by a crew going into Arctic waters. Just because it didn't happen doesn't mean it's pointless or stupid. Kinda like monsters eating naughty kids
I think you're being a little presumptuous there, mate. 💀
At no point has he ever said these stories were _pointless._ He merely states that this is a factual channel and he is maintaining the integrity of that.
He says it's unlikely and _why_ that's the case.
Folk stories are incredibly interesting. A great look into their culture.
@VelociraptorsOfSkyrim I'm not sure how to say this without being presumptuous, so here I go. It sounds to me like the stories are being dismissed as meaningless
@@whee38 Then you're created your own narrative that's not based on facts or reality. You're creating a fantasy in your own head. He never said that, he never alluded to it. He is playing a character, that character being someone who doesn't believe in ghost stories and is curmudgeonly about the idea of non-factual information. He is also the other character, the ghost story loving ghost. He is both characters. Both the one dismissing them and the one enjoying them. These videos are for entertinment purposes. He dedicates the majority of the video to the story and only a small portion to 'debunking' it. If he was trying to shit on them, he'd just spend the entire time doing that.
Glad to see the Creepster has returned. I was worried I wouldn't see him this year
Thumbs up new subscribers here from Cornwall UK 🇬🇧 👍
Been subbed for like a year, great content. These Halloween vids are among your best.
Having recently read "Frozen in Time"(about the Franklin expedition), the captain of this ship was a fool of the highest order if that was his actual plan(doubtful). Better equipped ships 100 years later would loose entire crews and ships.
Buddy was definitely in trouble lol
Thank you for bringing back the Creepster.
Thank you so much for bringing back Creepster , I know it's a bit silly , but it's part of the fun of your channel , and as ever - interesting research .
Love it! Happy Halloween 🎃
Welcome back creepster all good stuff always enjoy watching
So great to see this channel coming back, wonderful videos
So glad to see you back!
Your channel is brilliant, one of my favorites. Love your remit of sticking to facts and research.
That said, the Creepster (and your takedown of his superstition) is hilarious, and I look forward to next year's edition. :)
Finally! You are here! Yesh yesh yesh yesh!
I MISSED THESE!!!! Great work as always :)
Welcome back. This video was interesing even though I've known about the legend of the Octavius. One ship you really should do a video about is MV Joyita aka Mary Celeste of the Pacific. That would be awesome. Keep up your good work.
I'm so glad you're back. I remember watching all your content, but somehow I wasn't subscribed so i couldn't find you again.
Hey look, it's this channel's biannual video (the other one being the April Fools one)!
You have the best videos of all the marine guys. Would love more regular videos when possible! Much love
Glad this has graced my feed.
Forgot how much I enjoy your content
Stoked to see this !! You are awesome!!
I missed your macabre tales. Glad you're back.
The Creepster is so alluring! 🔥 💀
Lmao I honestly cannot imagine the audacity to just casually decide to take the northwest passage
"I will see you next year" Gun pointed at you, feels like the IRS...
hell yea! its good to see ur back!
When we needed him most, the Creepster delivered!
Turns out that it's not just me who love to change the plan & route at last minutes. Especially in family vacations 😂🙈
Nice story, and a lovely denouement presenting the facts.
The tale was just as credible as the Philadelphia experiment, or the Swedish farmer who unearthed 14th Century Viking rune tablets in 18th Century Minnesota- both _totally_ credible!
In fairness, it’s far more credible then the Philadelphia experiment. The PE is obviously a hoax, relies on fantastical beliefs about technology that could not be possible, and is easily contradicted by the USS Eldridge’s 20th century service records,
The Octavius story is somewhat possible and the record keeping of the 18th century leaves more wiggle room.
Octavius is a legend not verifiable by historically known records, but the Philly ex is a hoax constructed by one guy and promoted by a crank who owned a minor publisher
Happy Halloween! These videos with the loveable and spooktacular Creepster are my favourites among your altogether greatly enjoyable and quality videos. They are all a treat and I am now looking forward to watching this. Thank you for all of your hard work! Always looking forward to more! Take good care!
There are few channels that I will watch every single video as soon as I get the chance, but this is one of them. And gotta love the spooky Union
missed you man, love your humor
Hey, been enjoying the content and I'm really glad to see you back.
I was wondering if you've ever considered doing a video on the collision between USS Washington (BB-56) and USS Indiana (BB-58) that occurred on or about 1 February 1944?
The creepsters voice is so good
I love the Spookster's return I Liked the video five times!
Well done sir!! Keep up the good work!!
👻👽👻Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up👻👽👻
Amazing story and that end bit XD man I love this channel
The moment they stated that they were a Merchant ship heading to China and somehow bound up in Canada, I immediately knew they were trying their hand at the Northwest passage. As for reason they went there, one could just chalk it up to incompetence but at the same time its unlikely this whole thing really happened at all.
Putting the decision on the passage side I think the most unbelievable part of this whole thing is a wooden ship surviving for 13 years in the ocean without any sort of maintenance. Sea ice aside imagine what the boring worms, Barnacles, and every other woodeating creature would have done to that things hull. And that's BEFORE you get to the salt, the switch from wood to Metal clad to solid metal, to metal and fiberglass was done for a reason and one of those reasons is that wooden ships do not last long. Iron clad ships don't last long either, longer than just plain wood but still this sounds like it was just plain wood. Five or six years I might believe maybe you could convince me of seven if you could point to an example, but thirteen is asking too much.
Yes yes I know that they've found perfectly preserved wooden ships on the floor of the ocean but those are rare and the locations are unique in a way that prevents the usual rot from happening. This is not one of them.
I'd love to see one of these videos cover the Baychimo. I feel like that would be the one ghost story where they could both have fun.❤
New video LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I've never been big on maritime stuff, but after watching some Return of the Obra Dinn stuff your channel was recommended to me and I'm hooked. Your vids always send me down the rabbit holes of reading more on the material
it's just not Spooky Month until i hear a new ghost ship story
Happy Halloween and thanks as always.
I've been looking forward to this.
I do love me some maritime horrors for halloween! Thanks man
Thank you, very enjoyable. I started having doubts when the boarding party were too scared by a few dead bodies to check the holds!
Much like “The wreck of the Titan” predates Titanic, and even if untrue, this story is eerily similar to the fates of Erebus and Terror. 🥶
I love the spooky vids!🎃👻☠
So glad to see the Creepster make a return!!! Who knows, perhaps he will get his own channel one day?? Yes- I find it hard to believe a small wooden ship could survive 13 years in the pack ice AND somehow drift through the Northwest passage AND still be afloat. The Franklin ships were already leaking and damaged after just a couple of winters in the ice and beyond repair when they were abandoned shortly thereafter.
Glad youre back here Sailor.
He's back!!
Love this channel so much! Keep up the great work, fair winds and following seas!
Just found your channel. Enjoying this stuff. I think I can use your maritime stories as inspiration for adaptation to scifi.
Watching this while looking out over the beagle channel. Very cool!
10:29 This is an awesome channel. I appreciate the facts "Captain Curmudgeon"
Awesome to see the Creepster back again!
Always a pleasure to see The Creepster. I'm glad he was able to return after the writer's Boo-nion Strike! Oh, great vid too Skipper, have a Happy Halloween shipmates!
that union bit was good lmao
From now on I’m using the line “unless you wanna hear from my union rep cut the sass”
Octavius: "Why nobody believes in me anymore?"
SS Baychimo: "It's ok, buddy. I got you."
After watching Terror and reading about how impenetrable, mystic and dangerous any expedition to find Northwest Passage was - it becomes clear that a random run of the mill captain sailing with his family would NEVER in his right might just willy nilly decide "oh pffft lets just save time and CUT THROUGH THE MOST DANGEROUS SEA ROUTE IN THE WHOLE ENTIRE WORLD". Still, a cool story.
Dude is back and with my favorite ghost ship
Wasn't this story the inspiration for the Star Trek episode of a similar vein? Bunch of starfleet personnel found stone cold frozen dead in the midst of their lives.
Great video as always, please make a video about The M/s Hans Hedtoft (also called The Danish Titanic) one day, its the 65th anniversery next year. The wreck has never been located to this day
I can't find any ship disasters on TH-cam that I haven't watched. Glad to get a new one.
What’s the name of your background music? It’s perfect, but I don’t believe I’ve ever seen you credit it in your notes. It’d be great to play outside your house on Halloween.
yeeeesss a new video!!!!!
Hes back!
Look, I'm only mad that I didn't think of the Ghosts, Ghouls, and Goblins Union first.
HES BACKKKKK
It's like a real life Black Pearl!😱😱😱
