Was that one big fever dream or something?
You may be thinking about how he, or Mercer can accompany you on different quests during the game, neither of them are able to be used as an average follower otherwise. You could be confusing bits of the Companions cast for the thieves guild because they have a few options for followers, that’s my best assumption for why your memory is lining up like that
The original Skyrim came out in 2011 on ps3 and Xbox 360 lad. And even then, this wasn’t a thing. The only thing I can think of is Dirge has a similar line along the lines of “I don’t care if you’re best buddies with the guild master, I’ll still smash your face in if you cause trouble”. So maybe it’s just the Mandela effect?

This is actually lesser money that I originally had before I had bought and furnished all of my ingame houses and Hearthfire houses along with buying Daedric armors and weapons from my Dremora Merchant and paying for skill trainings! I had explored Skyrim at beginning of game for loots , blacksmithing materials and ingredients for alchemy to make my money, to use powerful potions and to level up! Only things that I bought was house building materials and lockpicks from beginning to midgame awhile selling and saving my money otherwise. I would use what given at end of quests , blacksmithing with enchantment when comes to armor , weapons & accessories and loots found by using them until I get something better and I will finally sell my previous items. I had been roomie with Faendal at beginning of game since Riverwood was good location for my needs awhile I was savingto build-up my money until I had gotten free player home after saving some important in Raven Rock. Raven Rock house came with everything that I had needed to make more money within it and quick way to level up when comes to Dragonborn dlc being harder battles. Fun times for werewolf Dragonborn Conjurer mage with Aela , J'zargo, Cicero or Frea who had conjuration summoning staffs depending on quests or exploring , two dead thralls - Dremora Caitiff & Silus Vesuius both with conjuration summoning staffs and Steadfast Dwarven Sphere along with traveling on Arvark! I had come prepared and I had chosen to get Steadfast Dwarven Sphere quickly as I could. Plus , I had crown with Lord Standing Stone and Lovers Standing Stone from earlier gameplay doing quest for crown and amazing bow. My son had started his own new game to follow my game strategy tactic playthrough by finally playing as conjurer hybrid mage! 😂 ❤

My roleplay is extremely profitable build. I will be spending my money on things to decorate all of my houses and use all of my mannequins to show case best of the best in Skyrim! Plus , I had many things such as houses' full of gemstones and more loots to sell off. I do donate multiple of money towards homeless citizens for beneficial merchant charity spell bonus when I am selling things off. This is why my speech was 100 master before fully into Skyrim midgame. It is just habit now to continual make money by now. I had quickly rebuild Thief Guild and opened up all their merchants too. So , I was directly made Thief Guild Master leader just right after taking out Mercer Frey. 😘

I never get the “you a broke muthafuka” dialogue but I also cheat my ass off so I’m sitting on more money than the jarls combined I could fund the country for decades from my castle on The way up the 7,000 step to the throat of the world. Sjel Blad Castle is a must have IMO been using it forever. I walk around with at least 5 million septim’s on me at a time and the treasure vault is filled with so much items of value that I’m pretty sure I’m the richest Dragonborn in the history of all the Dragonborn’s combined.

I've never heard the "poor" dialogue in game, 500 septims isn't much so I probably always have more than that by the time I get to riften.

That's the kind of thing Bethesda usually anticipates and has a funny response for.
"Sorry, the only thing I have for free is this" and flips him off.
Used to anticipate, now they'd just make some procedurally generated empty comment and if you dare to critique it, they'd complain and tell you you're playing their hane wrong.

ive had him call me wealthy and then procede to tell me my pockets are light so i think my games bugged
I like how he assumes youre a criminal no matter what you do in the game. Kind of feels a bit confining. It would be super insane to see a similar good/bad meter like in Fable used in this setting. It would be really good for more exploration in potential dialogue as well as story outcomes.
