I remember this performance well. This was the first time I saw my dad win the 'Nationals'. A very proud and emotional day! Was lucky enough to see him win again the following year with 'Between The Moon and Mexico' too. Fantastic performance, thank you for posting.

That's a strong statement, not sure you can judge across different eras to be honest. David King is certainly my favourite conductor, he seems to be able to pull the last piece of musical emotion out of any piece.
That melody in the solo cornet, which returns on euph , rep and then full band, must be one of the most sublime tunes ever written

I was there and remember the most outstanding solo cornet rendering of this wonderful melody of all the bands.
Jim Davies ?
I was there in the audience aged 14. Knew brighouse would win, rep player was outstanding.
Played this great piece with Rhodian Brass at those finals....most enjoyable....not quite in this class!,
a very good composition from Peter! ♫♪ timeless......
4 of those 'muppets' were also there in 97/98 😀
Mick Morris yup
David King is definitely the best conductor ever, and he proved it this year with Gallery of Howard Snell
