The whole point of the village’s twist is that the elders were afraid of passion, which red is the embodiment of. They just had an elaborate plan to try to create their own perfect world because they were scared of what the real one had to offer. I think it was a genius take on a parent’s worst fear.
I agree, I was totally caught off guard by the ending. Unfortunately it's the kind of movie that there's really no point in watching a second time because what makes the movie great is that you don't realize that it's modern day.
Heavily disagreed with the points about Now You See Me, Iron Man 3, and The Village. Maybe include some reasons instead of just saying "yeah they were bad"
Yeah, they're not that bad, just average twists. Go watch 'The Prestige'. Definitely a lot better than Now You See Me with the same topic/subject but with a HIGH TIER plot twist. The Village was pretty good though.
@@ecszst.croixe3573 The Now You See Me movies are quite literally the most ridiculous films I've ever seen. The Prestige is excellent though, with a clever sub-twist that hinges on quantum suicide and a whole bunch of out-there metaphysical premises. The main twist is a bit daft, but the film as a whole is pretty riveting.
Now You See Me is a hilarious franchise. I watched both of them with my jaw open, asking myself how something so ridiculous ever got made. They really are two of the dumbest films ever made. And they did give reasons. I thought the Iron Man 3 twist was quite clever though. I don't give a shit about comics so I wasn't outraged like some fanboys were - I just thought it was funny. Besides, the main reason they did that twist is because the real Mandarin is this racist Chinese caricature from the sixties. They couldn't include him as he is in the comic books, there'd have been uproar..
The Village made no twist. They're scaring people into not realizing they live in a fictitious world?! Talk about ridiculous. I would have rather seen something scary attacking them!
Village sucks, there is no reason to watch it again. Bunch of hippies in the woods scaring their own kids half to death with a shitty costume to keep them in doors.... its so fucking stupid. And it wasn't very scary and the twist sucks and the characters are insane. Send a blind girl into the woods alone, yeah!
I loved the ending to the Village, everyone gives that movie shit bc they didn't get to see a scary monster get killed, I wasn't able to predict a movie ending for once, I like that.
Megan Talley Unpredictable is only good when there is a logical connection between the build up and the twist. The twist had absolutely nothing to do with what transpired in the movie at all, the only connection was a monster that would have been far more interesting had it turned out to be real. It was just flat out ridiculous, and at that point in Shyamalan's career it is par for the course that his movies would have a twist. I expected the unexpected when I saw that movie in theaters and it completely disappointed me that there was no actual threat in the woods. And in 40-50 years of living in seclusion I'm supposed to believe there were no outside influences coming in from the outside? No one decided to look into this wildlife preserve or maintain it in decades? Come on it doesn't make any sense. Lol if you couldn't tell I really didn't like this movie
Matt Schilling I disagree. The 'threat' was humanity. How close-minded, isolated, intolerant, and illogical people can become if put in the right situation. The power of leaders to delude a group of people is very real. I understand that if you were anticipating a horror movie with a climax that fit in the horror genre, you were rightly disappointed. But once I looked at the movie as a take on human nature, I loved it.
Megan Talley I agree completely. It was a brilliant film with a totally unexpected ending, very much in the style of Rod Serling's Twilight Zone series.
Megan Talley Your second comment exactly! The first time I watched The Village I was pissed off because I thought it was a monster movie. The second time, I already knew the ending so I could see the film from a different view, AND I LOVED IT! Bought the Limited Edition DVD the next day. :)
@@Yewro2000 It's awesome and true to the spirit of the novel, in which Ulysse returns to Orly airport 300 years in the future and is picked up by an ape-driven taxi cab. I read it in Boulle's original French, but I had a French dictionary at my side for assistance.
jacqueline goretta tanoto I agree, but I think the twist angered the nerds who knew that the Mandarin was suppose to be one of Iron Man's biggest adversaries from the comics. Whereas the movie made him a pawn rather than a king.

Worst Game Plot Twist: Persona 4- The gas station attendant at the beginning of the game was the villain. There was no build-up to it, unlike who the killer of Inaba was. It seemed to only serve the purpose of padding out an already poorly-paced game even longer.
It really bums me out how many people hate the village - it's a gorgeous movie with an admittedly heavy metaphor about the strength of institutional fear and the problems inherent with idealism (they cause similar terror fur their children that they had tried so hard to avoid). I appreciate that post - sixth sense people wanted a wild twist but as a love story, it's a lovely film.
Jacob Price Thank you for defending The Village. I hate that people are so hard on M. Knight's plot twists. They should know what they're getting into when they watch one of his movies. If they don't like his style, don't watch his movies.
Part of the problem for The Village is that it was the movie that made M. Knight's reputation for plot twists. He'd done movies before, and there were twists, but people didn't really realize it was a pattern until then. Secondly, the twist itself is stupid - the rest of the movie may be fine and good, but it'd be better *without* the twist, or at least a different twist.
Yeah. I really like the Village and Signs. I've seen multiple comments saying they suck, but I don't understand that. In fact, I found The Village to be very shocking - like, finding out they are in a modern day world was insane to me... That was the biggest twist in the movie imo.
The Village is an impeccable movie. It may have seemed underwhelming to some... but the whole movie is a metaphor for how, allconsuming, cult mentality can be. It's a lesson in mass hysteria.
So true. I don't know why it's on that list regarding the plot twist. When you think you're done with the creature... BAM, another plot twist and this one I didn't see it coming.
It's an idiotic movie; like all his moronic films it was written backwards, after he came up with a very-mildly-interesting plot twist and built the whole film around that. It's fun while it lasts, but "impeccable"? No way.
I only saw The Village once at the movies, but still remember it to this day as having the worst plot twist. I think the idea was good, but it was just poorly explained and seemed too over the top.
watchmojo is a big FOOL.how can he think that the village's twist is bad?Literraly people from the same village are scaring the kids and everyone by wearing this clothes and letting nobody get out of the village so no one can know what the real world really is.money,murder,etc.
Actually War of the Worlds has one of the most accurate endings for alien invasions type of scenarios. They would be annihilated by a microorgnisms, because thier immune system never met them. And by that you didn't thought that and put it as bad plot twist, makes it more reasonable why aliens wouldn't think about it either...
It's a story that was told and adored for A HUNDRED YEARS before Spielberg. It's on the same level as calling _Shakespeare_ bad. Not one work in ten thousand made it through 100~ years of winnowing, and War of the Worlds was written at the same time as Tom Sawyer and Sherlock Holmes!!!
Why do people dislike War of the worlds ending? I didnt mind it at all, it made sense. The planet protected itself from the invaders like a dusease. Its even forshadowed earlier in the movie when the girl gets a splinter on her hand and tells her dad that the body will eventually push it out.
Vinny Banana Because they treat the audience like idiots, they think people can't figure it out themselves. And yeah narration works for a book, but it's just being lazy as a screenwriter.
The original story it made perfect sense considering it was written in the 19th century. Cars weren't even around then. So the ide that the best weapon earth had against a powerful alien race was microbes was amazing. Fast forward 100 years and we know so much more, and we aren't even making colonies on moon! A race that advanced as we see in the later remake would have had multiple constant updates on data collected over1000s of years. Data analysing atmospheric changes, pollution from the technological inhabitants, and studies on flora and fauna. Even if a small landing party was to conduct an investigation prior to the main attack, the martians would have become ick and the bodies examined in quarantine. So the concept was great in the original setting, illogical in the 21st century.
Nicole Powell also, how the hell do they think it would end? People really think humanity has the power to defeat smart ass giant ass big ass weapon having ass aliens? Like wtf dude. HG Wells was way ahead of his time and its a brilliant novel and movie, which is something that rarely happens
I disagree. In my opinion, The Village's plot twist actually was genius. We all are pushed into boxes that we may never open due to the fear created by the others inside. That was a great theme for a movie.
Michael Woods Like GasCityGuy said "I think a lot of people miss the whole point of it". That's you missing it. The monsters were 'people in suits' all along. The audience doesn't know what they are. The twist isn't that 'it's people in suits' (but that is a surprising thing in a way, to some). The twist is 'whether or not the monster is real'. Metaphorically, the monster is still very real, but it's in her mind. It's not a real monster, but it's terrifying her just as much as a real one would. Ivy KNEW they weren't real because now that's what she's been told, but she's blind and her experience is still terrifying her. It might have been worse if she could have seen the creature. I think people who like the movie are more interested in how Ivy deals with the fear and the question of whether or not the monster is real. That's the real twist (not the fact of the matter, but how the metaphor plays out).
I guess it comes down to how you interpret the movie and what you think the plot twist is. I don't think the plot twist had anything to do with whether or not the monsters were real but that the movie takes place in present time when we as the audience assume that this took place in the past. How is this not completely obvious to you? Don't read too much into things.
scifiNotSyfyFan I don't even think of 'The Village' as a plot twist. The big point of 'The Village' is that the girl grew up believing in monsters, and can't shake that belief even when she's given proof that they're fake. Like "Signs," it's a movie about faith, not about monsters. Unfortunately, it was marketed as a monster movie, directed by the guy who brought you Sixth Sense... Good movie ruined by bad expectations.
At least half of these were actually decent twists. I love how we gotta throw more hate at M. Night. We forget this guy hit homeruns with his twists in "The Sixth Sense", and "Unbreakable". He is a great writer. "Signs" and "The Village" are excellent movies. Why does everyone have such a huge problem with the aliens having water as their weakness? OMG! It's not THAT big of a dang loophole. Geeeeez.
Mousegold FiveK but what if there's no such thing as water where they live? And they assumed that since humans were living with it it wouldn't be harmful?
Mousegold FiveK If they knew water was harmful to them, they would never have come to Earth, they would have gone to a planet with more suitable chemistry for them. Planets with liquid surface water are comparatively rare, so it should be easier to find a planet WITHOUT tons of water than one WITH tons of water. And the fact that Earth is mostly covered with water is one of the easiest things to determine about it from space.
That would be fine except he made 6th sense , unbreakable and signs right in a row. Since then he has not made a really good movie. The village was ok but after that his movies have been a pile.
The man got obsessed with the idea that a successful movie means it has a plot-twist. Although he's not the only one, Chris Nolan does it frequently too.
If you think the village had a bad plot twist you ENTIRELY missed the whole message of the film. The village was an incredible movie, dont even try to change my mind
Personally, I didn't like it because the plot twist was identical to a 1995 young adult novel (Running Out of Time) that I read in school a couple years before the Village came out. Critics also pointed this out at the time.
To be fair, using the vision of the battle in Breaking Dawn 2 was better than the book, which had no vision and no fight at all. Would've made for a boring ass movie ending.
I was looking for this. Lol. How can it be a plot twist if it never happened? As someone who read and enjoyed (despite all of the massive annoyances) the books, I thought the vision was a neat thing to add and made it more poignant. The only reason that battle began was the death of Carlisle. It showed Aro just how loyalty earned is always better than loyalty forced. Plus, who doesn’t love the HELL out of Alice literally feeding Jane to Sam?
4. The Village. Woah-woah-woah. I actually thought that was a pretty good twist. Elders dressing up as monsters = Scooby Doo? Nah. I think that is way oversimplification. There was a reason as to why they were doing that, to keep people from leaving the settlement. A story to make them understand why they had to stay there. The story went that the monsters felt that they owned the woods, and so a treaty was formed: "you guys stay in your clearing, the tree line is the border, don't cross it and we'll be good." The elders fabricated the whole thing to keep everyone safe, indirectly, from the dystopian, crime-infested outside world. Too harsh Mojo, too harsh, says I.
THANK YOU, I was going to say the same thing!! I never saw that ending coming the first time I watched the movie. It all has an explanation and a reason, it's not just a bare, unexplained plot-twist.
Damn you're right. I think the plot is so good, because it is not so different from what religion does in our actual life, the control, the fear, and all that.
"hey lets forgo modern medicine in case someone gets injured or sick because we want a perfect utopia and diseases and injuries never ever happened back then". Seriously they could of just had a stash of medicine in that shack with the costumes and no one would of been the wiser.
In Signs, the twist isn't the water duh, it's that everything happens for a reason, to save their lives right then, in that moment. It's a twist of faith.
Apparently, according to WatchMojo, filmmakers should have re-imagined even a twist penned by H. G. Wells. Somehow, I don't think even a school-goer would agree with that!
Exactly. I guess the people at WatchMojo are under the impression that they know better than the author of the very novel that movie is based on. Fortunately, we know better than WatchMojo. And so did H.G. Wells.
@Fashion Monster The OP can have many accusations laid at their door - jarringly cantankerous moments nestled in amongst the generally pleasant demeanour, appalling fashion sense, total ignorance of soaps and reality TV - but a lack of historical knowledge hopefully shouldn't be included, as it's supposed to be their specialist field. I'm reliably informed that the OP (whoever he or she may be) does throw exceedingly enjoyable sarcasm parties, to which all are cordially invited
And then he makes the mistake of waking away from Morgan Freeman instead of calling for the guard to open the cell. What’s the guard supposed to think? How did this FBI agent get out of a locked cell? Suspicious, isn’t it?
I watched 23 for the first time just a few days before watching Shutter Island for the first time. Needless to say that it led to me suspecting the Shutter Island plot twist midway through the movie... So I was the only one among my friends who wasn't impressed by Shutter Island. No regrets though. Liked 23.
Yes yes and yes. I was looking into every list of this kind for past few months for a comment like this. There isl nothing special in shutter island. The movie is poorly directed, off the topic several times, bad acting by Mark Ruffalo. Come on as much as I know it's terrible being schizophrenic but isn't everything would fascinate a normal person about how a schizophreniac sees the world. It's just an overly hyped movie.
Actually, in "War of the Worlds" the movie was just being true to the original book from H.G. Wells. In the book, the aliens were destroyed by bacteria.
Seumas o'Hairt - yep, well viruses anyway. Same thing for Planet of the Apes - at the end of the novel, the astronaut goes back to earth and finds the planet taken over by apes
Seumas o'Hairt highly developed aliens, travelling thousands of lightyears through space and then they all die, because they miss this little bacteria-fact
+Albert Balbastre-Morte Audiences To me, when I saw the film, I asked myself: Why the Hell would you live in an isolated village that looks literally like a 19th-century village and have people live like it's the 19th-century if it takes in the modern day as well as away from civilization? In any story, even in films, there's suspension of disbelief, it doesn't make sense.
I mean, “Remember Me” is how people felt when their loved ones died in the attack on the World Trade Center. Like they were expecting something more, but it was taken from them because of the attack.
I feel like that ending was more effective at striking an emotional chord with audiences than, say, him getting hit by a car or killed in an attempted mugging gone wrong. It was an event that effected all of us on some emotional level. Some people saw it as a cop out, but it was used as a way to tie all the characters together. If that ending had been replaced with something more generic, Remember Me would have, ironically, been quickly forgotten.
@@AxeMan562 As someone born a year after the event, I never really understood the gravity the attack had and how many people were affected. To me "Remember Me" made me realise how bad it must have been for everyone who lost someone so suddenly. You spend the entire film being so caught up in these peoples lives, they grow on you. I thought the film did a really good job at trying to make viewers understand a little better how awful it truly was, especially for a younger audience. It left me with a big lump in my throat for sure
+Thom Florio Exactly what I thought when I heard that. I mean, it's such an out of place soundbit, I remember noticing it everywhere when I was really young.
cenamontana1989 I meant the aliens are weak to water and boarded windows/doors. I've also always had a problem with people who have a family member who dies then decide they give up on religion because something bad happened to them. Besides what does their mom dying have to do with surviving the invasion?
Well, there's always that fan theory that the creatures in Signs were actually demons, and it was holy water specifically that was their weakness. That's my head canon at least and I'm sticking with it.
I can't remember the film well now, but it just didn't add up that well... at least, not enough hints for the audience. If you watch it again, with the twist in mind, I think there's a few plot holes.... I'd need to watch it again myself though.
I think Remember Me’s twist was incredible. A lot of people rag on it, but from the perspective of someone who has no memory of the events of 9/11, I think it was really a well handled surprising twist that puts you in the shoes of everyone who felt that heartbreak. I was too young to remember it, and didn’t know anyone who died in it, but for a brief minute after that movie I could feel the pain of characters I came to know experiencing that day in real time. I pay my respect and shed tears for everyone who died, but learning more about an individual really sticks with you and makes it all the more real. Even if it is fiction. Idk, I don’t think it was some cop out to end a romantic movie, I think it is exactly what it set out to be.
I love The Village. That plot twist totally threw me for a loop, as I'm sure it did most. I also love Signs, even if the whole water issue is a serious oversight. Still creepy, entertaining, and fun to watch.
There are theories that the "aliens" in the movie are actually demons, and they are afraid of the water on Gibson's house because he played a priest in the movie (thus, it was holy water).
that doesn't change the fact that its almost as stupid as the ending of signs, why would a super advanced alien race not think about their total lack of immunity to our diseases?
I believe the reason was that they didn't have micro-organisms on mars. It's an ending that is only dumb now because science is different than it used to be.
Mavrickindigo i refuse to believe that an advanced alien race could develop without other creatures developing along side it, those creatures would include disease causing micro-organisms
+Shawn Ravenfire I think most people who hated that twist were fans of the comic book character who didn't want him de-fanged and kind of parodied like that. As someone who had nothing invested in the characters beforehand, I thought it was funny lol.
The only thing wrong about The Village is that everybody expects it to be a horror film and they closed their minds on that alone. If you watch it without any expectations, you'll see it's beauty and message.
Okay, tip for all directors and writers out there. Don't pull something unexpectedly bold and then out of nowhere reveal at the end that it was "just a vision" or whatever and none of it even happened at all. That's like an even worse version of "it was all a dream"... smh.
I don't see the problem with the end of The Village. I remember seeing it all those years ago in the cinema, and when she jumps over the wall into the modern day, just being hit for six. Your Shayamalan hatred is unjust.
I agree with most of these, but I do disagree with the movie 'Signs'. It wasn't a surprise that their weakness was water because it was said earlier when the Father went to visit the guy who accidentally killed his wife. He told him that the aliens were afraid of water and that people were moving to lakes and oceans to be safe, the Father also brought it up to his family later to help decide whether to stay or go. I know that aliens are suppose to have superior intellect, but their knowledge can only go as far as their planet's and the other planets they have invaded. Their planet most likely doesn't even have water which is why they never thought of the fact it could hurt them. It's like in the movie 'Independence Day', people were mad that the aliens were superior in every way, but were taken down by a simple little virus, but their planet most likely never encountered a virus so they didn't know what to do about it nor did they have time to do anything because they didn't notice it until the last few minutes they were alive. I mean, when we were first introduced to viruses we didn't know what to do either at first. Anyway, that's just my opinion.
realafah When it comes to Signs, the way I think about is like this. The alien invaders are either political refugees or the last survivors of their race. Whichever they are, they can no longer go to their own homeplanet. So they wander the galaxy, in search of a new planet they can inhabit. Resources are running scarce and they're slowly dying in their spaceships when lo and behold, they stumble upon Earth, a planet that looks like it could support them. Because of the urgency of their plight, they don't have time to properly investigate the planet, so they quickly jot down a few navigational markers (the crop signs) and come down to Earth to check things out. The first thing they quickly realize is that this planet is already inhabited by us. The second thing they realize is that this planet is covered in a material that is deadly to them, namely water. Although they are more then a match for any single human in a 1 on 1 confrontation, they are vastly outnumbered and any human can get a hold of some water. That stuff is literally everywhere. There are days when it won't stop falling out of the sky. They can't stay on our planet because we would kill them if they did. So they have no choice but to pack up and leave.
This is the most ridiculous reasoning I've ever heard. It is both surprising and nonsensical that their weakness was water because there is literally water in the atmosphere, if they're weak to water, they would be burning to death just by standing around. And this is with humoring the idea that an advanced species would be weak to something like water, something that every biological life requires.
Nathan Mabie only problem with this is that, yes, every biological thing requires water, but, what if these aliens were the exception? What if one had been captured and examined and it indeed is factual that they don't require water? As far as they being unable to stand in the atmosphere, what if it's the concentration level of that water that harms them? Not so much that they're bothered by minor levels but a full on hit from water, like the glass falling on them, was too strong. Like, I could be dying of thirst, but I can't just open my mouth and satisfy myself by the minuscule water vapors in the air. I think there is a way to reason it out if one is willing to do so, but if one is too close minded to a fiction movie to allow themselves to understand things, then, I guess it won't be understood.
Okay, what made you assume that Mark Ruffalo's character had acted like an idiot his whole FBI career? I mean, he's the one smart enough to find these horsemen and bring them together while also harboring a plot for revenge, and he actually gets the guy who was responsible for his father's death right? So I would think that the entire time the Horsemen are involved he simply acts ignorant so they (and the audience) simply won't suspect him as more than what he's acting like - an FBI agent. He's probably pretty intelligent, and had no problem with work beforehand, which only builds on the idea that he wants to catch these guys so badly because he doesn't fail, which in turn helps cement his persona, which makes the twist all the more surprising. I honestly didn't think the concept was hard to grasp, it's not supposed to be. It's the art of misdirection, applied to the audience for the entire movie. So it actually seems like a great twist to me, but some people don't think critically about such things And shut up you uncultured hipster swine, M. Night is a legend and you'd shit your pants if you met him
Couldn't agree more. This was a long winded version of what I came here to say. No way should now You See Me be on the list. So you would have liked it better if the movie ended before the scene in France?
@@matthiascerebri3315 I think the village ending was quite good... They sent her in particular because she was blind and wouldn't see how the outside world was, thus keeping their rules of society
I kind of have to argue against the twilight one...I'm not saying they're great movies, but the whole twist was done because a lot of people were pissed that there wasn't a fight at the end of the book, so the whole vision thing was a way for them to give people the ending they wanted without really being untrue to the book since it ultimately ends the same
Yeah I liked it, it was entertaining. Plot holes yes, did I like the end no not really but it's a movie not a documentary. Lots of people hate Unbreakable too and I thought it was outstanding.
whisperienced eeeeh. I don't hate Unbreakable, but I find it to be extremely boring. I don't mind Plotholes too much, as long as the overall movie has great atmosphere, and signs as well as village is outright scary at moments. That's good enough for me.
buciallstar Yeah Unbreakable has pacing problems, I can see how you feel there. End of the day if it entertains you plotholes or w/e it's a good movie.
buciallstar Signs is one of those movies that I love to watch just for fun because it is suspenseful and a little scary and I think the actors all played their roles well in the film. Sure there's some plot holes and unrealistic parts but it's a sci fi type movie so that's to be expected and it's fun to suspend one's belief for a couple hours. As far as M Night movies go it's probably my second fave after The Sixth Sense.
When I was a kid I watched Signs, and it scared the crap out of me. I didnt need to understand a faulty plot. I just saw scary, desperate aliens. And also with the planet of the apes. The movies graphics were mind blowing at the time. It wasnt until later that people hated the ending. Maybe because there were no sequels? I always saw it as a future story to be told that has yet to come out. Which always made me upset
Call me crazy but i liked the twist to The Village. Also, while I've only seen bits and pieces of the Twilight movies (I've yet to sit through an entire one) I Have caught the end ending of the final film and I thought it was a pretty good way to inject some... SOMETHING into the movie without drastically changing the ending. You said it yourself, "...the coolest scene in the franchise." Would the movie have been better off without it? How can something that arguably makes a movie better be considered a bad thing?
I liked the Village too... but mostly because I wanted to see about 45 minutes more. I didn't want her to just get picked up by a car, I wanted to see her hiding from cars, exploring this weird, alien world she had stumbled into, and finding out about the modern world.
The coolest scene in the franchise was still terrible. The action was bad, the effects were bad, the musical score was bad, the acting (the little that was in it) was bad, the story leading up to it was bad, the... you get the memo. I'd rather not have the franchise to begin with.
'Remember Me', for me, was a shocking plot twist, because it just seems like a typical Romance, but with the last scene, I took it as the movie trying to show that the victims and their loved ones had lives of their own and no matter what they were, 9/11 completely changed that and the suddenness of the last scene kinda mirrored how it felt in reality.
I hate Shyamalan for what he did with Avatar (the real one, about a kid being a reincarnation of the entity that carries the power of water, air, fire & earth)
Sir Ben Kingsley as the fake terrorist was absolutely brilliant, and he played it superbly. And super hero movies shouldn't take themselves so seriously. It's tiresome when everyone is being so serious, like it's some great melodrama. I also think the twist that bacteria wipes out the invading aliens a great plot twist. And it is worth noting that this plot twist is as the original novel, so it dates back to H. G. Wells in 1897.
Couldn't agree more, they are insulting a real classic by putting that one on the list. In contrast to the dumb and biologically inexplicably strong weakness of the "signs"-Aliens to water the weakness to bacteria from a totally different ecosystem your own immune system has never encountered before is very realistic. It has happened in history with quite a few native American tribes upon first contact with European germs brought by the white man.
Totally agree, it was awesome and hilarious. I think it got the most hate from comic book geeks who felt their holy source material got twisted around. Cause The Mandarin is an iconic figure that can't be messed with, right? *roll eyes*
+Chris Rudolf IKR? Those aliens are intelligent enough to travel light years to this armpit of the galaxy, using whatever advanced physics and metallurgy they had to develop. Yet they choose to land on a planet that's three-quarters water. That's as stupid an ending as I've ever seen. But Kingsley was a scream! I couldn't stop laughing.
The twist in Signs is actually genius if you look at it from a religiously thematic point of view. Im not religious, but the movie has a lot of religious symbolism. Mel Gibson's character is a fallen pastor, and the aliens represent demons. Everyone fears them and they are hardly ever seen. The daughter represents and angel and is even described as looking like one in the film. The water represents holy water, and when splashed upon the aliens it burns them. After the demons are destroyed, (fighting your inner demons if you will) he regains his faith and becomes a pastor again. Im not religious, but this is definitely a film with deeper interesting meaning.
I disagree with several on this list. But in Literature, I think 'Alice in Wonderland' needs to be mentioned. The author creates one of the most fantastical worlds ever and at the end cops out and says "oh, it's all a dream".
Mustache monocle By that logic, War of the Worlds shouldnt belong there either. I believe that if there's a film of it, and that film has a twist, and that twist was confusing or otherwise unsatisfactory, then the film (in this case, Alice in Wonderland) is worthy of being on this list. regarding the original post, i feel that the ending was satisfactory to some degree. to a psychologist, they might watch the film and say "now why is it so zany? ah, of course! it's because this is all the workings of the subconscious mind!" -- i think this is the justification/premise used for darker Alice media, such as a video game that came out a few years ago.
Why am I not surprised that the Hollywood audience hated the idea of someone deciding that a brutal battle where almost everyone dies should not happen and there should be peace instead?
The Village and Now You See Me are great plot twists and shouldn't be on this list. Unless this whole list is a plot twist and those are actually a good ones.
Domagoj Devedija I don't get how it's a plot twist watching it they talk about the modern world alot "they use money we don't" "put a gun to his head and killed him" "go to the towns they have advance medicine"
I actually liked "The Village" twist (although it seemingly ripped off a Margeret Peterson Haddix book which I also read). But Now You See Me didn't make sense, and blatantly lied to the audience. Why would Mark Ruffalo read books for clues, when literally no one is watching him, if he was the guy?
Now You See Me literally was about fucking someone who was making a living debunking "magic" that wasn't really magic. Sorry, but sending someone to prison for stealing, when they didn't, is way more fucked up than exposing a con artist for what they are doing.
Signs? Are you tripping? That was bullshit I'd agree with you on the village tbh, it wasn't a bad twist. I disagree with you on remember me, I think they just lodged that in there for the sake of being clever and dramatic, but it really just shows the laziness.
The Village was awesome and the twist had me. Signs is one of my all time favorites. If you follow from the beginning the daughter had a thing for water and would leave glasses of water all over the house. It was a part of the plot that the aliens were affected adversely by it. All part of the puzzle that by the end showed Mel Gibson's Faith returned. I thought it was brilliant.
"King of the bad movie twists". What?? Umm, The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, The Visit. All great twists. The guy is awesome and a lot of his movies are so underrated because everyone expects the Sixth Sense shocking twist
The Sixth Sense was a lucky fluke, and he tried to recapture the thunder by giving everything a twist ending, as if that's all there was to it. So, cue an endless string of terrible movies with an obligatory twist. Signs was the worst to me; *before* the twist, you have people boringly walking around while no actual plot is happening. Hours of pretty much nothing. THEN we find out that the DUMBEST alien invaders had thought to attack a planet that's 70% Kryptonite to them, where what MELTS THEM LIKE ACID FALLS FROM THE SKY. Signs was when I gave up on him. Reactions to his later work say I was right to.
I liked "Now You See Me" with its plot twist. Why should the mastermind not be able to climb up the career latter of the FBI AND be a genius magician with a lifelong grudge against Morgan Freeman? Everyone should have a hobby.
NDfor SPDadsdas You replied to my comment, so you wanted me to see it. If you'd say: "God, I love chocolate" and then someone else comes in like: "Chocolate is disgusting, full of hormones and gives you cancer!!!!" you would wonder why he feels the need to tell you this, right?
You could say the same thing about what the first person said. I don't understand what you're trying to achieve. You stated your opinion. I stated my opposing opinion. Dismiss it if you like, I don't care. Are you trying to get me to justify my position?
I liked the twist at the end of Now You See Me. It was like one giant magic trick with the best misdirect in history. Also, while a bit disappointed at the Mandarin twist in Iron Man 3, I enjoyed Sir Ben as Trevor Slattery. He was fun. That being said, I fully believe that Marvel owes us a proper Mandarin.
I didn't like Now You See Me ending because it made no damn sense in terms of character drives. Nothing the Inspector did made any sense in the context that he was the puppetmaster behind it all. It was way too big a leap for my suspension of disbelief for him to act the way he did in the movie and that's what ruined it for me. Also they sorta hinted that *maybe* there was more *magic* going on than just smoke and mirrors. Except, they never explained anything. You just have to accept that *somehow* they accomplished impossible feats because "wow cool magic effect".... Just.... There is only so much suspension of disbelief that a movie can expect of it's audience.
They literally explain EVERYTHING. Did you fall asleep during the film? There are entire retread scenes showing exactly how they did each trick and they are all in explicit detail.
Matt H Well first of all, hypnotism doesn't work like that. Second wtf is with the bubble?? Also they subliminally coerced that guy to go to that one place?? Like... there's so much in this movie that has no basis in reality and they'll have you believe that they are and I'm just like "uh no". I'd list more examples as I'm sure there are more but sadly I've avoided this movie since it's debuted so it's been a while for my brain to remember so many details of a movie I hated. And anyways, my biggest pet peeve was just how the inspector behaves through the entire movie. ZERO sense.
Matt H And none of them are believable, like one just does not hide themselves in armoured truck transporting millions of dollars. The twist was just a cheap trick to make people believe that this movie full of cliches actually had any substance to it.
Your honorable mentions included war of the worlds a classic piece of literature written by H.G. Wells one of the greatest sci fi writters of all time. The end monolog in the movie is taken directly from the book and is an incredible end to one of the very first books to ever include aliens. Also although the village was not the best movie, i will say that it is based on a pretty good book.
So wait, a few videos back WatchMojo made a video praising how good Jim Carrey acted in Number 23(Yes, I guess even better than in Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine) And now they're bashing him because of that movie?
I guess they are saying he put in a great performance in a film which ended up with a terrible ending? His acting ability and the quality of the script can be two different things.
Agree... Signs more so than the Village, but I thoroughly like both. Watch Signs whenever I can. Not religious at all, but get the message and it is very entertaining.
While I don't need The Village to tell me how bad cults are and how they limit one's worldview, I do like it because it kinda simulates how cults see the world when they don't know anything else about it.
People being disappointed by The Village plot twist missed the point of the movie. The erroneous marketing was the culprit. It isn't a horror or thriller movie. It's actually a fable and a love story. The suspense is there to support the fairytale like quality of the film (after all the original fairy tales were dark and twisted) and highlight how difficult it must be for Ivy to cross the forest, even if she logically now knows the monsters aren't real - showing the depths of her love for Lucius. Brilliant cinematography and score.
I have always said that the Village's problem was marketing. If you expected the movie you got in the trailer, of course you were upset at the movie you actually bought tickets for
My real problem with the village is the timing of the twist, it's revealed way way too fucking soon. Before the final confrontation with the "monster" they reveal it's just costumes thus completely murdering the enormous tension the scene could have had, because yes, those monster were super scary when you didn't know wtf they were. Makes no sense, why would the movie spoil it's own climax like that
"Love Conquers All" is the message we are to experience by Ivy's story, and I used to think it was the deepest message of the movie. But now I think that Edward's story is really the heart of hearts. I think the deepest message here is this: The Elders thought they could remove evil from their lives by removing themselves from the world. But evil followed them. Because the only true monsters, the only real evil, is within us all. The evil which lives within all of us, right along side the good.
@@chiyo-chanholocaust8143 because that's not the ultimate climax or reveal. This story has a series of climaxes. Think of a camera focusing on one small part of a picture. Slowly the camera zooms out, revealing more and more details of the picture. There would be a series of "aha" moments.
Awww the fact that monsters in the Village aren't real got people disappointed? I mean seriously, the Village is so brilliant, you really have to be shallow not to see that. It's a movie where a very present truth is masked by a supernatural element. A forced tradition and idealism. Fear used as a weapon. A sudden realization that the world outside our safe zone is different from what we believed, due to the simple fact that we never gave it a chance and remained so blind and ignorant, that even monsters in red robes can fool us.
This is a clickbait list mostly. You can't use genuinely terrible movies nobody knows so they just found out which movies had divided opinions and listed them.
Because it makes no sense when you watch it again. Besides, Shyamalan tries some sort of back to back twist with that scene in the woods, when we already know it's all fake.
You're in the minority on that one. The village gets more hate then love as it should. Just because you never seen the twist coming doesn't make it good. Its considered a massive disappointment.
right, like ya, the movies were not that bad and the twist ending were ok. the only thing im bad about is that neither in the good or bad list DO THEY EVER MENTION THE MOVIE " THE OTHERS". like how the fuck can you not mention that awesome movie with an awesome twist at the end.
Sixth Sense. Unbreakable. The Village. Once you know there’s a twist it’s easy to guess based on the plot. And yet they are still pretty good movies, despite the twists.
The whole point of the village’s twist is that the elders were afraid of passion, which red is the embodiment of. They just had an elaborate plan to try to create their own perfect world because they were scared of what the real one had to offer. I think it was a genius take on a parent’s worst fear.

I've been arguing about "The Village" for years. I don't care what anyone says, it was an amazing movie.
Talking Kitty Cat it was
Only movie where I left the theatre wanting a refund.
Talking Kitty Cat it was shit.
Talking Kitty Cat I also loved "The Girl In The Water" which also got a lot of hate.
Iron Man 3 wasn't that bad. The movie altogether was just average. 🤷♀️
The Village made no twist. They're scaring people into not realizing they live in a fictitious world?! Talk about ridiculous. I would have rather seen something scary attacking them!
WHATEVER, MAN...You guys can shit on Shyamalan all you want, but The Village was a good movie with a cool twist ending.
No, no it is not.
Sam Hayes Well we are just going to have to agree to disagree.
R.J. Boyd no, no we are not
Kenny Spillman Too late.
Matt Schilling
I disagree.
Agreed! The village was a great film! I even loved Lady in the Water. His movies don't deserve the heat they get
Megan Talley I agree completely.

Love that movie

Jacob Price Absolutely agree!

They were the protectors and jailers...just like a cult. A prison of beliefs
So true. I don't know why it's on that list regarding the plot twist. When you think you're done with the creature... BAM, another plot twist and this one I didn't see it coming.
The village can not be in any way in a list with twilight. It’s a well written story and the twist strange , believable and no one see it coming

Yes. The Village was a huge let down
No, the Village is a great movie, with a great soundtrack. And I'm totally fine with having the same film tastes as Hillary Hahn, to be honest!
I was pretty let down at the end not gonna lie
The aliens succumbing to Earth's microbes was in the original HG Wells story from the 1890s.
I love war of the world's
+Vinny Banana Yeah I just didn't like how they had to explain to the audience like were idiots. That's one of my main problems with movies nowadays.
stan standerson but thats how the novel ends ,and how can anyone not like Morgan Freeman's narration?
Vinny Banana Because they treat the audience like idiots, they think people can't figure it out themselves. And yeah narration works for a book, but it's just being lazy as a screenwriter.
The War of The World's ending is a literary classic. It was genius.
"was"
And it's in the book.
Scottland Olds Harbert At the time it was an amazing concept, and still is.
Agreed.

You can’t fault War of the Worlds...that comes right out of Wells’ novel.
Nicole Powell also, how the hell do they think it would end? People really think humanity has the power to defeat smart ass giant ass big ass weapon having ass aliens? Like wtf dude. HG Wells was way ahead of his time and its a brilliant novel and movie, which is something that rarely happens
that was the point--we tried everything in our power, but it wasn't enough...we lucked out in the end
Not only that, but they used the ending from the lame remake. At least they could have gone back to the original.
I disagree. In my opinion, The Village's plot twist actually was genius. We all are pushed into boxes that we may never open due to the fear created by the others inside. That was a great theme for a movie.
scifiNotSyfyFan +1 The twist in The Village is a metaphoric one not literal. I think a lot of people miss the whole point of it.
GasCityGuy Please explain. Seemed pretty literal to me.
Geeeeez.
Donovan Kirkpatrick It's mostly because of the aliens trying to invade a planet that is 70% of what their weakness is.
Mousegold FiveK but what if there's no such thing as water where they live? And they assumed that since humans were living with it it wouldn't be harmful?
ϟTheBLUϟ They knew water was harmful to them... or at least, they were afraid of it. Shamalans character even stated it.
The village was ok but after that his movies have been a pile.
havent seen the video yet but calling it now: there's going to be at last two Shaymalan movies

Too harsh Mojo, too harsh, says I.
yep
Great movie.
Yes! I don't know why people have a hard time getting it...
It's a cliché.
"Oh and they were saved by such and such a thing!"
I think we all get it. We just find deus ex machina of that level cheesy, and bad writing

WAR OF THE WORLDS used the same twist that HG Wells did in the novel
Apparently, according to WatchMojo, filmmakers should have re-imagined even a twist penned by H. G. Wells. Somehow, I don't think even a school-goer would agree with that!
Exactly. I guess the people at WatchMojo are under the impression that they know better than the author of the very novel that movie is based on.
Fortunately, we know better than WatchMojo. And so did H.G. Wells.

The plot twist in 23 sound actually pretty cool
It's actually a decent movie everything considered. Not the greatest but not terrible.
It was a great movie.
Gabriel Guthrie weak twist ever.
Actually, in "War of the Worlds" the movie was just being true to the original book from H.G. Wells. In the book, the aliens were destroyed by bacteria.
Seumas o'Hairt
Agreed, it might seem corny by todays' standards, but the story is around 120 years old.
But humanity isnt travelling through space, that far. With this much higher technology it should be possible I think
thank you someone speaks up for the ending
how the heck is The Village a bad twist?
+Albert Balbastre-Morte Audiences To me, when I saw the film, I asked myself: Why the Hell would you live in an isolated village that looks literally like a 19th-century village and have people live like it's the 19th-century if it takes in the modern day as well as away from civilization? In any story, even in films, there's suspension of disbelief, it doesn't make sense.
P.Z. Arnott duuude, that was the whole point of the movie. It's spelled out.
+Albert Balbastre-Morte Interesting. Thats the first time I realized that. **nods** good point.
+Albert Balbastre-Morte To be honest, this was one of the best plot twist. it actually made alot of sense in the end.
Steve Tucker It did, but some people didn't get it. But if you rewatch the movie, you'll find lots of details who reinforce the solid plot.
I loved remember me
Relying on a real world event for cheap emotional points isn't symbolic
@@AxeMan562 As someone born a year after the event, I never really understood the gravity the attack had and how many people were affected. To me "Remember Me" made me realise how bad it must have been for everyone who lost someone so suddenly. You spend the entire film being so caught up in these peoples lives, they grow on you. I thought the film did a really good job at trying to make viewers understand a little better how awful it truly was, especially for a younger audience. It left me with a big lump in my throat for sure

Movie Games To me it felt like it had a good build up but the ending was a letdown
They had to lose their mother in order to survive the “attack” and he got his faith back, I fuckin loved the ending
cenamontana1989 I meant the aliens are weak to water and boarded windows/doors. I've also always had a problem with people who have a family member who dies then decide they give up on religion because something bad happened to them. Besides what does their mom dying have to do with surviving the invasion?
Mr Man yeah I mean the atmosphere was great the set was perfect but then...water.
Well, there's always that fan theory that the creatures in Signs were actually demons, and it was holy water specifically that was their weakness. That's my head canon at least and I'm sticking with it.

There are theories that the "aliens" in the movie are actually demons, and they are afraid of the water on Gibson's house because he played a priest in the movie (thus, it was holy water).
why is War of the Worlds in there? it's the same ending as the original book!
that doesn't change the fact that its almost as stupid as the ending of signs, why would a super advanced alien race not think about their total lack of immunity to our diseases?
I believe the reason was that they didn't have micro-organisms on mars. It's an ending that is only dumb now because science is different than it used to be.
Mavrickindigo i refuse to believe that an advanced alien race could develop without other creatures developing along side it, those creatures would include disease causing micro-organisms

I liked that movie, I thought the twist was great.
+iL0veHayleyWilliams I agree. The Village is one of my favourite movies!
+Patrice Stephen what is one other movie you like...literally any other movie
Anyway, that's just my opinion.
realafah Rea! Dude, you're my favorite TH-camr! :D
realafah When it comes to Signs, the way I think about is like this.
Google Working There's a difference between fiction and illogical bullshit.
Remember me was shocking. It made me realize how intricate and unique lives in the middle of their story were cut short. It got to me.
So it actually seems like a great twist to me, but some people don't think critically about such things
And shut up you uncultured hipster swine, M. Night is a legend and you'd shit your pants if you met him

Janace Bickerstaff EXACTLY

@@matthiascerebri3315 I think the village ending was quite good... They sent her in particular because she was blind and wouldn't see how the outside world was, thus keeping their rules of society
I kind of have to argue against the twilight one...I'm not saying they're great movies, but the whole twist was done because a lot of people were pissed that there wasn't a fight at the end of the book, so the whole vision thing was a way for them to give people the ending they wanted without really being untrue to the book since it ultimately ends the same
Plus they split the book into two parts and they had to pad the movie somehow.
Nathaniel Levesque And there had to be ONE entertaining scene in the series.
Stephanie Meyer is the worst author ever.
Plot twist. It's twilight so we already knew it was going to be bad.
But it wasn't, you can't make it any worse than the "it was ALL A DREAM" ending, or "vision" in this case.
I actually like signs. Sure it's not the very best ending in the world, but it was incredible suspenseful.

eeeeh.
Now you see me was surprisingly good...I didn't mind the twist at the end.
that was my favorite plot twist actually. It was so exciting and jaw dropping, not bad at all.

You said it yourself, "...the coolest scene in the franchise."
Would the movie have been better off without it? How can something that arguably makes a movie better be considered a bad thing?
Crazy.
What, you demanded we call you it?
DeepFryedSlurm Can't argue with that logic.
Steven Grant Hey, I'm no fan of the franchise myself but it's all relative. Point still stands.
The Village is not bad plot Twist. I loved This movie!!!

Gabriela Lopes exactly
'Remember Me', for me, was a shocking plot twist, because it just seems like a typical Romance, but with the last scene, I took it as the movie trying to show that the victims and their loved ones had lives of their own and no matter what they were, 9/11 completely changed that and the suddenness of the last scene kinda mirrored how it felt in reality.

Robert J. Williamson Wow, I disagree so much with your comment.
I’m so glad comments are defending The Village. If anything it was one of the BEST twists i’ve ever seen in a film.
Actually the main point of the movie is "everything happens for a reason" watch the movie again and you will see what I am talking about
凸Glizzey i get that too. This movie has a lot more to it than people realize

I disagree with several on this list. But in Literature, I think 'Alice in Wonderland' needs to be mentioned. The author creates one of the most fantastical worlds ever and at the end cops out and says "oh, it's all a dream".

I know. That's why I said 'in Literature'. :)
Mustache monocle By that logic, War of the Worlds shouldnt belong there either. I believe that if there's a film of it, and that film has a twist, and that twist was confusing or otherwise unsatisfactory, then the film (in this case, Alice in Wonderland) is worthy of being on this list.
regarding the original post, i feel that the ending was satisfactory to some degree. to a psychologist, they might watch the film and say "now why is it so zany? ah, of course! it's because this is all the workings of the subconscious mind!"
-- i think this is the justification/premise used for darker Alice media, such as a video game that came out a few years ago.
The Iron Man III one still bothers me since Kingsley was superb and would've made an awesome Mandarin. That screw job still bothers me.
I thought the twist in the village was kinda cool tbh

Am I the only one that thinks bacteria vs aliens makes sense?
nope.
they put it as dishonerable mension even though its on the list
I. Th. just because it makes sense doesn't mean its a good movie plot twist
I. Th. well you didnt expect the aliens to die without a fight now did ya? or at least the majority of the audience.
Baker's Bread nope, because the movie is focused on characters, not the "war"
When I watched now you see me I was very surprised
Domagoj Devedija great reply! Lol
Now You See Me literally was about fucking someone who was making a living debunking "magic" that wasn't really magic. Sorry, but sending someone to prison for stealing, when they didn't, is way more fucked up than exposing a con artist for what they are doing.
I'm sorry but the ending twists on Signs, The Village and Remember Me (the last one i didn't watch yet) are AMAZING

Ecliptor Calrissian thank you for your opinion!
RIGHT people were just expecting the wrong and shoking plottwist.
Shyamalan is a genius
Night is awesome
I liked "Now You See Me" with its plot twist. Why should the mastermind not be able to climb up the career latter of the FBI AND be a genius magician with a lifelong grudge against Morgan Freeman? Everyone should have a hobby.
+Drace90 The movie is fucking stupid. Whole thing is cringeworthy.
NDfor SPDadsdas
And why should I care about your opinion?
What kind of question is that? Ask yourself the same thing. It's a comment section, people make comments, I never asked you to care.
NDfor SPDadsdas
You replied to my comment, so you wanted me to see it.
The prestige was way better
They always do this, and I don't mean with just Jim carrey.
I guess they are saying he put in a great performance in a film which ended up with a terrible ending? His acting ability and the quality of the script can be two different things.
I don't care what people say, I really like that movie. Disliking am movie just because the vast majority of people do is stupid.
My exact thoughts when I saw that lol.
Looks like some dissonance in Wachmojo town!
The people who think Signs is supposed to be a scary alien horror movie...
The Village and Signs are fantastic movies.
Martí Crous yeah I loved both of them
If you expected the movie you got in the trailer, of course you were upset at the movie you actually bought tickets for
A good argument for ignoring trailers.
There would be a series of "aha" moments.
did anyone else heard the Wilhelm scream when that vampire felt into the earth in Twilight?
Awww the fact that monsters in the Village aren't real got people disappointed? I mean seriously, the Village is so brilliant, you really have to be shallow not to see that. It's a movie where a very present truth is masked by a supernatural element. A forced tradition and idealism. Fear used as a weapon. A sudden realization that the world outside our safe zone is different from what we believed, due to the simple fact that we never gave it a chance and remained so blind and ignorant, that even monsters in red robes can fool us.
DadoPanda it is incredible
This is a clickbait list mostly. You can't use genuinely terrible movies nobody knows so they just found out which movies had divided opinions and listed them.
The village plot twist was great. It reminds me of my childhood when adults would scare kids about ghost snatching kids who are out late at night.
Why The Village is in the list ? It’s one of the most surprising (in a good sense of the word) twist I never seen in a movie...
Because it makes no sense when you watch it again. Besides, Shyamalan tries some sort of back to back twist with that scene in the woods, when we already know it's all fake.
Thaleis Von Paris i agree no m night movie should be on here
You're in the minority on that one. The village gets more hate then love as it should. Just because you never seen the twist coming doesn't make it good. Its considered a massive disappointment.
Because some people are stupid
I liked the movie but the twist wasn’t that surprising
Twist endings are awesome. Like in the Sixth Sense. You find out that the dude in that hair piece the whole time? That’s Bruce Willis…the whole movie.
Thomas Zulli that movie was great, and so unexpected that it was him
hey sorry i just watched sixth sense , but what do you mean the hair guys is bruce willis ? sorry kinda lost here , just watched yesterday XD
+Amanda Hanni He did, and you ruined it.
+Thomas Zulli Don't forget about the fifth sense. The full perpetration is the greatest twist in any movie
Sixth Sense was amazing.
Ok, like watchmojo.com I strongly disagree with your list. How are 90% of these amazing plot twists trash? They are awesome.
aaaaaand.......??????????????????
The Village had an incredible plot twist because the autistic guy that seemed to be nice turned out to die without anyone noticing
Magicwormcakes 2 Idk about anyone else I was actually ok with the iron man 3 ending
right, like ya, the movies were not that bad and the twist ending were ok. the only thing im bad about is that neither in the good or bad list DO THEY EVER MENTION THE MOVIE " THE OTHERS". like how the fuck can you not mention that awesome movie with an awesome twist at the end.
@@GG-kc1uj the movie arnt ruined bc a few people got butt hurt bc they got dupped.
Sixth Sense. Unbreakable. The Village. Once you know there’s a twist it’s easy to guess based on the plot. And yet they are still pretty good movies, despite the twists.
