He's actually working on Bloodstained Ritual of The Night right now, this game was nothing but a promise to make something we could play until Ritual came out, which is was supposed to do this year sometime.

Considering that this was an extra reward for the Kickstarter reaching a stretch goal don’t be expecting the sequel, if there is one, soon. They need to finish the main game of the Kickstarter which they’ve pushed back into 2019. That game is in the style of symphony of the night, a Metroidvania.

Nice callback to Shinobi 3. One of the most incredible and gameplay satisfying games ever and nobody ever mentions it.
That is my favorite game in the series, it's such a great game to pick up and play

@@ClassicKrusty depends on what you prefer in a Castlevania game. Curse of the Moon is the best if you prefer classic style Castlevania, while Ritual of the Night is best if you prefer a Castlevania game more like Symphony of the Night.
btetirick As someone who prefers the classic style, even I have to say Ritual blows Curse of the Moon out of the water.
@@sammyshehole I would say both Curse of the Moon and Ritual of the Night are excellent in what they do: CotM is a pitch-perfect Classicvania, and RotN is a damn good IgaVania.
And it's only $10. This is a steal at how good of a game is. Hell, it's worth it for the soundtrack alone.

I adore this game, I was really impressed that a mere spin-off game was so incredibly well done. Also, these review videos have been great, keep it up!
In fact it isn't that uncommon. Mighty no.9 and Yooka-Laylee were lackluster but Freedom Planet, Axiom Verge, and Undertale (outside its fandom) are a great franchises. In fact Sonic Mania was also made by outside fan-studio, just released by SEGA.

No it does not. Freedom Planet is a fan made project meant to honour a series as was Axiom Verge. Undertale takes inspiration from the Mother series. They are how ever in no way directly affiliated to another major game. It's not like Undertale was spawned because Overtale was super popular. A spin off is something that was spun out of another title. For example all the Mario sports games spun out of the core Mario platformers.

Now do a review of the main game, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. One of my favorite games this year and the perfect spiritual successor to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
I am obsessed with ROTN. Loved it! Now that one can play as Zangetzu its cool, but I wish they would've done more with him and his abilities. Word has it there will be a sequel to that! and coming soon is Curse of the Moon 2!
The Curse of Issyos by Locomalito is a very good "Old Castlevania" game.
And 'Maldita Castilla' is what Ghosts n' Goblins *should* have been.
And 'Hydorah' is Gradius/Lifeforce/R-type done beautifully.
Seriously, that dude is one helluva game designer.
Inticreates such a great developer, they have created amazing 2D actions games such as Megaman Zero (the four games for the GBA) , azura striker gunvolt, blaster master Zero , and many others .
In mi opinion they are the new "treasure" , I would like to see a new Contra or Ninja gaiden developed by them .

I just love the MMZ GAMES,MMZX games,GV games and BMZ,with Mighty Gunvolt Burst and BSCotM i'll finally be able to forget Inti for associating with Mighty Number 9.

I though Zengetsu's style was based on Getsu Fuma from the japanese exclusive Konami game that uses similar mechanics to Castlevania,as he appeared as a playabe character in Hramony of Despair along with his stage off his entire game

Same thing. Getsu Fūma Den is the generally accepted Romanization, although there are variants.
Yu-gi-oh translates his name as Getsu Fuhma.
Anyone still got that game on the 360? I'm looking for other people to play that with. I got that castlevania late and never could play it multi-player
Didn't know that zangetsu could kill the other characters to gain abilities. Looks like I'll be playing through this again.
Zangetsu feels weak compared to the other characters, but with the other abilities he turns to be the best, even you can unlock a mode where Zangestsu has all the abilities from the beginning, you almost don´t need to touch the other characters
Would be cool if you could kill other characters with the ones you already have (other than Zangetsu of course) to give THEM special abilities.

Ritual of the Night Was recently released.
no joke, this was one of the most fun game experiences I've had this year, I'm glad you dug it Mike. I especially enjoyed playing through in every possible different way for all the endings. Zangetsu alone with no sacrifice powers felt like a legitimate old school Castlevania challenge towards the end, really hard but so satisfying to beat.
The funny thing is, IntiCreates (the developers of this game) made Gal Guardians this year, which is another Castlevania inspired game that uses the visual style from the 16 bit Castlevania games. Mike predicted it!
Just be ready for the REAL Bloodstained game in 2019.
There’s a good chance this one actually ends up being better. But i hope i’m wrong.

Great review. I hope we get many sequels to this. Going back to traditional graphics is what I wished Mega Man 11 & the newly announced Streets of Rage 4 did, I'm still hyped for those.

Eh we already had retro style for megaman 9 and 10. So i'd argue it was time for something new. Feel like the new visuals don't pop as much as 1-10 though.

Makes me a little sad, Grant was my favorite character from Castlevania 3. He extremely underrated in Dracula's Curse and was quite powerful in the right hands.

Yeah and they didn't even do anything cool in GTAV. Really basic stuff James Would've loved flight and grappling hook. Oneyplays killed it with Motifa

This game was literally just a kickstarter bonus for the main bloodstained game coming next year.. and it rules. and this is true castlevania. Same designer but can’t use the ip... so I’d say bloodstained is the true successor to castlevania.. more so than new castlevania games from this point

I was surprised when I didn't see you do a mike & ryan episode for this game. Glad you finally got around to playing it. I feel so many indie devs miss the mark trying to recreate retro games, but curse of the moon really did an amazing job at the castlevania formula. Zangetsu only run was the best experience for me, being a near perfect balance of challenge and fun.

Freaky. I just got this for my 3DS yesterday. Didn't really know much about it. Just bought it because it looked so much like the classic Vania games I love. Haven't made it very far yet. But I'm looking forward to plowing through it on my next day off. Thanks for the gaming tips. I know I'll be using alot of them.

Also, there are walls that Miriam can break with her giant axe. You can also use Zangetsu's charge attack on the same walls to break it.
The last I heard, Konami had zero plans to re-establish the Castlevania franchise, thus why the man behind Symphony of the Night did his own, 'clone' game of the Castlevania franchise. This was completed and released due to his Kickstarter hitting the proper goal, and to help both fill the time and warm us up for the forthcoming main game. 2019 can't get here quick enough for the release.

I did not know you can murder other characters to get power ups and I have beaten this game.
Just think, this game was just a bonus for KS goals being reached on the main project (A Symphony of the Night styled game...with Miriam as the main character)....Hell of a bonus we got here :)
Don't know if you're aware of this, but Gebel is set to be the main villain in the upcoming Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. Pretty much the Dracula equivalent for that game.

I think it’s worth mentioning that this game is not made by the “main” Bloodstained people (who are related to the classic Castlevania games).
Instead it’s a spin-off by Inti Creates, who had Capcom background, and made Mega Man 9 and 10, and the Gunvolt games.

Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon is pretty much a bonus game that the devs of Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night made for us fans. Ritual of the Night is going to be more of the Metroidvania style of gameplay. theres trailers that show gameplay of it out there if you care to see it mike :)

I played it on my PS Vita and it was the best experience I ever had and now I'm gonna play the Castlevania IV. Bloodstained got me into these retro games and I love it
Love it when status ailments work on bosses. Etrian Odyssey is pretty good about that, even letting do that shit to the final bosses and super bosses of their series.
Love Curse if the Moon. One trophy away from having em all, and it's just a matter of time. I backed bloodstained and am all the more hyped for it to arrive at last next year.

Personally I think zangetsu with all the powers is the best play through. Faster pace double jump is fun and his jump attack is great.
Mike, did you see the interview they did with Igarashi about this game? Konami basically told him, "Gothic horror adventure is dead, that era of Castlevania is over and no one wants it!", so he made the upcoming game, which looks like a spiritual successor to Symphony, and a few members of his team came to him with this, and basically told Konami "Fuck you, people like these games!" Find his interview, I'm paraphrasing of course, but its great!

7:31 Having skills effect bosses doesn't consume any "extra time" from the developers... They are deliberate design choises. Some skills might be a bit too overpowered against certain enemies. As you just called one of the character's skills "overpowered". In fact making the bosses resistant to certain effects WOULD take the extra time.
Untrue. Making a 'freezing' animation for example for the bosses is definitely taking extra time for them.

Curse of the moon was the surprise release of the year, and has refreshed all of our vintage-vania sensibilities - What a game, what a soundtrack. And what an intro! Top review mike, as always!
Great review Mike! I had no idea about some of the features you described! I’m on the last level and had no idea about the powers attainable by killing the team members, rather then have them join you and etc. Made me want to go back through it!

For me Bloodstained Curse of the Moon is the real Castlevania 4 that was never made and we always wanted until now. So far this is my indie game of 2018 and is just in the indie category because God of War (Boi of War) was also out this year.
Currently doing a no allies, no upgrades run and it's so difficult, kind of wondering how you'd kill the two headed dragon boss. Great game.

Yeah, I just made it to level three and I'm thinking about the later stages and how impossible it might be. Definitely makes the game just as if not harder than the original Castlevania. His sword isn't as good as the whip and he doesn't have anything close to the cross.

Bloodless was also one of the worst for me when I made Zangetsu only without any upgrades and soul arts om veteran mode.

The music of COTM 1 was really good. Sad to note that the sequel, while it improved in challenge, lacks in catchy melodic song choices.
I'm surprised you didn't mention final attack every boss has. In this game, EVERY boss does one final attack after you've killed them, and towards the end they feel completely unavoidable. This was the only complaint I had about the game, otherwise it's a beautiful work of art.
