Collecting vinyl is like collecting playing cards. Half the fun is finding copies that interest you. What ever quality/copy you are willing to accept is up to you. We all have a budget we have to operate with in. Some people can buy rare/pristine copies off eBay/discogs and some can only afford thrift store records. All things are truly subjective, It’s all about what provides enjoyment.

Loved the vid! Wanted to share one important comment from the perspective of a younger member of the VC!
The VC as a whole is so amazing & inclusive & full of some of the coolest people! Lately - for some reason - there has been an uptick of more seasoned members directing their critiques toward vinyl trends, which is gatekeeping many younger members & turning many of them off to participating, knowing they will be disrespected for liking what they like, or even just asking questions. How did this happen?
It is the hating on "people who play Crosleys", shaming of younger members who only hang records on their Urban Outfitters rack, attacking sites that sell multiplied colored vinyl variants, digital vs analog, overpaying in auctions, motivation to "flip".... I could go on.
All of these perspectives aren't totally off-base. Sure, there could be more info about proper playback, care, & understanding throughout the WHOLE vinyl industry (working on providing that through my channel).
But this is a hobby. Encourage younger members! This is a prospective market, & people's likes will ultimately dictate simply supply & demand. The vinyl world will change again, new generations will discover old things, & the joy is in the journey, between the grooves, & having shared experiences with the cool community!
    Keep on grooving your way

We are supposed to be getting younger people in it so it lives on. I inherited my father's collection and we enjoyed 45's together. If he had "today's attitude" I would not be into it.

@@groovingyourway For what it's worth - I don't care what record player someone has - including Crosleys etc - I'm just glad to hear you have a record player. I personally have no use for colored vinyl, but it doesn't offend me and I don't hate on it. I'm quite happy to see younger people discover the joys of vinyl, regardless of how they get into it. Especially hoping it also sparks interest in all the great music of the last, oh, 100 years. Have a great time.

Lyrics are not only not important, they are often detractors. When I was growing up most of what I listened to had lyrics but that was because all popular music had them. Now, as an adult I have access to all the music of the world and I spend most of my time steeped in jazz, exotica or classical.

I'm 69 years older than collecting vinyl since the 60s. I love colored vinyl. As far as I'm concerned, those that are not fans are like Henry Ford who said you can get a model t in any color as long as it's black. Colored vinyl makes it interesting and doesn't damage sound quality at all. For me often times it has become part of the experience.

Missed the opportunity to post something regarding this, so here I go with 7 observations that may rub various people the wrong way and yet I'm still going to sleep very well tonight.
    1. Van Halen vs Van Hagar....
Van Hagar is a softer sound, a pop-ish/rock-ish radio friendly sound. A nice safe cozy unremarkable vanilla sound.
In other words, if the Carpenters became a rock band...they'd be Van Hagar...but i digress.
That is why the very last thing I need is listening to Van Hagar sing about things like love. No thank you, I'd much rather go runnin' with the devil because Van Halen ain't talkin about love...which is why Jamie's cryin' in the first place.
    2. On Iron Maiden.... If their lead singer never sang a single lyric I'd be a huge fan, but the minute I hear Julia Childe start singing....I'm leaving the room or changing the station.
    3. On Mettalica...To me Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem make much better music in their sleep...if muppets slept.
    4. Pat Boone is a misunderstood genius.
    5. Air Supply sang nothing but melodramatic show tunes. They should do Kleenex commercials...
    6. Comparing the Rolling Stones to the Beatles is a waste of energy. They're very different bands. The former, though very good has wayyyy over-stayed their welcome. Now it's like watching a bunch of mummified raisins trying to sing as if they're still 25 years old. The latter, however, left on top of their game leaving a masterful body of work that's influenced generations of musicians from here to Tatooine and back again. Using critical thinking, one cannot point to a decline with the Beatles but the Stones, it's not a decline, it's an avalanche of ho-hum mediocrity that's only been matched by Coldplay & Maroon 5.
    The Jawas would agree...
    7. The Cars' 1980 album "Panorama" is their masterpiece start to finish, so sayeth the Moony.

Made the comment just last week that Ozzy would be the biggest loss in heavy metal .....for me. I had someone continuously want to argue that when I specifically said for me. Like I said , I don't understand how some feel we are all supposed to think the same thing.

Stylus is not the most important part of the turntable. It is the most important at cheap turntables, but at higher end levels a good transport makes night and day difference, a good arm is important too. These two needs to be high quality to let the cartridge shine. I see no point to put a $3k cartridge on a $1k turntable, it will not be able to show its qualities.

    • @jhutt8002
      @jhutt8002 ปีที่แล้ว

Eh. When you're at that level, I don't think there's a point to give advice "What's most important part of turntable"...😂
Most people don't have 1k turntable to begin with. I'd say 99 % of people listening vinyl don't even have 3k invested in their whole system.
So it is definitely true statement for people outside that 1 % who actually buy + 1k cartridge for their system.
btw. turntable worth < 1k is not "cheap". I'd say if you go under 300 brand new, that is cheap. Used, there isn't really that specific price points to follow...

Great stuff Frank and definitely some controversial views on this weeks show. If I were to add to that, I would say - Vinyl is for speakers whilst CD is for headphones. Billy Idol is nothing without Steve Stevens and the only decent song to come out of Fleetwood Mac is "Oh Well" ??!!??
    Keep on spinnin !!

I just found out my parents own one of those suitcase type record players. I never knew they had one. I was so surprised, my parents especially my dad was an audiophile kind of guy. Always the best. And put everything on reel to reel tape. But it wasn't Crosley. It's big, heavy and wooden. It has a CD player, and radio as well. I think it's perfectly fine to listen to the radio on it, or the CD. It surprisingly has a fairly decent sound. I guess because it's wooden and huge, and heavy.
My mom got it out because that's the only thing in the house that plays at 78 speed. And my mom wanted to listen to my dad's old 78 Rock and Roll records. Today is the one year anniversary of my dad's passing.
I was shocked seeing those old 78s still in their original heavy paper sleeves. I have to get my mom some good sleeves. Some of those are Chuck Berry 78s.
And my mom was touching the record, and picking up the arm and dropping it on the record.
I was like No, don't do that. Mom you're killing me.

Kinda agree with Marek on lyrics. I'm biased, though. I grew up with songs in English before I learnt it. I still listen to songs in languages I don't understand.
About The Ramones, punk might have been invented in the US but the Brits did it better.
Tone controls on the amp? That's a resounding yes.

I like Coloured Vinyl records, but I think it's the same as a limited edition CD set, or something of that ilk. It is kind of a gimmick, but if you're a big fan of that artist, you might want something *more* than the standard release. I don't go for the coloured exclusively, but if the option for coloured is there, and it doesn't cost a ton extra, I might pick it up. I gotta admit, i'm a sucker for the splatter and fun coloured stuff. End of the day though, it's about the artist, and the music.

Hey Frank. Why did you say Mike, formerly of vinyl storage solutions? Interested because I recently watched your videos with Mike before pulling the trigger on a couple of packs of outer sleeves from VSS. I should have them on my records this Tuesday. Cheers from Burlington ON.

Love this. Great to hear the more uncommon views. Personally mine would have been...The Beatles where the biggest thing to happen to rock and roll and influenced God knows how many musicians....BUT.....to me their music is average. A few Ok songs here and there, but overall just another average sounding band that had a few good songs. PS...White album is BEYOND overrated!! There I said it lol.
