When divorced, the person who is a person of that country usually gets custody. It's probably the same in other countries.
However, this case is different. This is an issue between him and the Soka Gakkai.

You have to understand Japanese judiciary system follows the "Guilty until proven innocent system" So don't keep your hopes high for justice from Japanese judiciary.
Japanese society follows the rule of public acceptance above morals because its an island nation where group acceptance proceeds over individual rights aka the samurai system where you have to swore loyalty over your life. That means people don't care if you are right ir wrong. If your fundamental rights are not appropriate for society then they will come after you independent of any moral or legal justification.
Thats one of the sad part of japan and one of the main reason why the country population is declining because nobody can follow the society while having two kids while pursuing your dream simultaneously

    • @oneyedthing
      @oneyedthing 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great take on the subject.
Japan wouldn't be japan that people love if they didnt have that system. As a foreigner I always say that Japan is a great country for a vacation. For most people, staying/living in Japan is a whole different spectrum.
Nowadays, their whole system is a conundrum. Their government is highly dependent on tourism which the locals have to deal with face to face. Tokyo. Osaka, and Kyoto seemed to have the highest impact on culture shock.

I've heard about this happening way too often. There's a post every week on expat forums. Ive worked in childcare in Japan and even seen it happen (mothers come during the day to take the kids away). It happens to Japanese too, and ive heard of Japanese fathers also taking their kids in the same way. Heres the thing: learn Japanese, learn the culture, learn the system. Ive seen too many people (sorry to say but mostly men) start businesses with their wives, rental contracts, assets all put in their wives name, she handles all the government and official stuff, acts as an interpreter alwats and then a divorce is on the cards and suddenly you're f***ed.
Japanese women especially of a certain generation keep their cards close to their chest, will handle everything for you even without complaint, but you won't know something is wrong and they will blindside you. Many of them plan for months or years and just leave in the night. If you want to set up a life here, learn the language, come prepared and be independent and don't assume it will never happen to you, because that's what they all say - even though most expats living here have heard of this happening to someone they know, so it's not a falsehood or a legend.
If youre a foreigner in a foreign country, you'll always be at a disadvantage (even if its just a mental feeling of this not being "home." I'm not saying he deserves this, but its not an isolated incident. I just feel so bad for the kids in these situations. Clearly the kidnapping parent is unhinged. I've met enough middle aged expats in bars who have turned to alcohol and haven't seen their kids in over a decade. Be independent - I can't stress that enough.
Learn to handle Japan on your own, or when stuff like this happens and you've always relied on your partner you'll be screwed.

A long time ago a saw a video documentary about these expet it was from 2015
Apparently this is completely normal to happen over there in Japan and even More if the Japanese person only what a baby from a Foreigner and it wants the
Qualities of the eye shape hair ect
Some say that you have to be one open to learn the culture and the mindset of the Japanese people and that your parent is willing to learn your culture
What i mean is ( if you are latino/a and you are a from a culture that is very expressive with everything you do and the person you find male or female that are Japanese and they don't seem to like your culture and don't want to understand it then is better to leave the relationship)
Another thing i would recommend is learning the body language of Asians since then to be different from Western and Europen type off body language

The audio volume is a little bad.
I know this is a little later to say it but, whenever there is a cheat case, end the relationship, i know it is hard to endure but when the rescpect it is gone, there is no turning back, sure in some cases the person could have a change of heart but the betrayed one will never be the same and nothing worth more than peace of mind and heart.
This kind of thing with custody is quite similar in any place around the world, in country that i live there are cases where even when the mother was prove guilty of violence ou false acusation, the court usuly keps the custody with the mother.

I'm very sorry for Kevin. And especially for his kids. They are the victims in this story. Also it doesn't really makes sense to victim blame kevin for his partners choice. I mean everyone knows that if you are in love with one person, its not that easy to cut ties especially if there are kids involved.
How the authorities treated him after all sounds like Japanese authorities typically (for foreigners) would handle these situations. It can be really really frustrating so...its also understandable that kevin kind of sounds like hes victimising himself.... because he's (also) a victim.
I think in this specific situation men are in fact more often in an unfortunate state, because mothers normally always get the childrens custody rights in the first place. In most of the cases this is the right thing no doubt, but if the mother is the abuser (which, suprise, does also exist) or clearly is not able to take care of the kids its just a shame that fathers are not even getting a chance to prove that they are the more appropriate caregiver. And this is not only in japan, that exists everywhere in the world.
In the end i really hope for Kevin that he finds a lawyer or maybe a NGO in japan who can help him and especially i wish his kids all the best and all the love they deserve. ❤

I am so sorry what Kevin went through and the loss of his sister and his children. He doesn't deserve this. But I cannot help it, but he gives me the chills. He says that he doesn't want to judge his wife but everything he said about her is very negative and it's like if he wants to put himself like the victim, the nice and calm guy while I find him controlling and judging a lot. Just an example: He speaks about her mental health issues and then to say that she was "too lazy". The word choice is betraying what he really thinks. Maybe I'm all wrong but I can't help it to think that he victimizing himself like he had to endure everything so bravely. You do not take responsibility for your own behavior. And remember: the people you choose around you, says everything about yourself. Never put the blame on external circonstances or others. You are not just someone who is watching the situation.
