TIPTOP AUDIO ONE TUTORIAL ~ Eurorack sample module

  • This is a tutorial of the TipTop Audio One eurorack sampler module. We go over the basic panel features including the different CV and gate modes. We then go over the SD card, how to update the config file and how to load your own samples and process them with Audacity. I also demo using the One as a VCO by loading a single cycle waveform and finally trigger a full track to see how it handles longer samples.

    Thanks for actually showing the features step by step rather than just running it through a sequencer and rapidly playing random sounds at us like everyone else. Might pick one of these up.

    I just bought this module and your tutorial was tremendously helpful. I really appreciate you showing us how to creat your own samples with Audacity. Now I can’t wait to try my own samples on this module.

    I've had the TipTop ONE for two weeks now and still learned something from your tutorial - thanks! ... Amazing how versatile such a small and rather simple module can be... I only wish it had a tiny display to indicate the currently active sample... One thing I think you forgot to mention is play lists, this way you can narrow down the choice of samples to what you really need...

    The lowest point in the sample at about 20 minutes really reminds me tonally of the ost from final fantasy 6. Needless to say, I freaking love it. I'm an ms20 playing guitarist and I'm about to dive into modular, and I've learned an absolute ton from your videos!

    When using the CV File Select mode, it's a good idea to run the gate signal through a slew limiter first to allow One to load the new file before it receives the gate signal. Otherwise any CV change associated with that gate signal will only be applied at the next gate.

    Hey! About the single cycle waveform. I red in the manual "The minimum length for files is 1024 samples. For the most seamless looping (like waveforms)
    files should be a multiple of this number." Maybe trying to add length to the cycle(copies) would make it sound more like a sinewave :) Cheers

    • @EdwinSL
      @EdwinSL 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, than it works fine, one cycle of 1024 samples is enough (at 96 kHz the frequentie of the wave should be 93.75 kHz)

    After watching your videos I got interested in buying couple of this modules. But before I do that, I would like to know the following: suppose you have loaded a couple of drum loops (say each 2 bars long) to the SD card and you put the module in loop mode, trig it once and let it continue looping . Would it then be possible to switch the drum loop sample with an external CV while still keeping it looping?

    like your videos and they are so easy to understand, the eurorack series is perfect! please don't stop 😆
    but I have some problems with audacity to find the cleaned files. this part in your video was little too short for me.

    • @onceuponasynth
      @onceuponasynth  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! Sorry I cut out the part about saving the project first. So in audacity you first have to save your project (File -> Save Project As). Then when you apply a chain audacity will automatically create a folder called "cleaned files" in the same folder as where you saved the project. Hopefully that makes sense.

    i've ordered a One in part to your work.
    i have a question about your rig. that horizontal format of Eurorack above your One..
    where you have line in/out unit.. what is that unit and format. i've done a couple of searches
    and haven't had luck. is that an alternative Euro format?

    • @onceuponasynth
      @onceuponasynth  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! They are called "1U tiles" because they take up only 1U of rack space. Only a handful of manufacturers produce modules of this size and only some cases provide space for 1U modules. I don't think it's an official eurorack thing, I believe some manufacturers just decided to start making them for convenience. The one I'm using is by Intellijel and you can browse their other 1U modules here: intellijel.com/product-category/1u-modules/

    While this has a feature or two that RadioMusic doesn't have, RadioMusic is about half the price and has one important feature this one lacks-- and that's the ability to group the audio files into banks. I use each bank to have separate "kits" of different sounds that I can switch between by doing a bank select, though bank select is a manual button push only. The output volume is a handy feature here that RadioMusic lacks, and RadioMusic is a bit finicky about the format of the WAV files, but it otherwise pretty much operates the same.

    • @onceuponasynth
      @onceuponasynth  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Are you referring to the config.txt file? Essentially it allows you to pre-configure the trigger type and CV type settings to some default values. If you just open the config.txt file (which is on the SD card) you can edit the second and third line (replace "Trigger" and "Quantize" with one of the other options listed at the bottom of the file). Then save your config file and the next time the One is powered on with that SD card it will automatically read the config.txt file set those settings for you.

    You could take this in a Concrete type of direction, by adding the new Make Noise Morphagene. Maybe even 2 of them. Or 1 Morphagene and 1 SDS Reflex LiveLoop. Creating a 2 to 3 looping granular voicing system.

    Be cool if it had CV inputs for both file and frequency control simultaneously.

  • @Vurt72
    @Vurt72 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Disting mk3 is more powerful since you have both pitch and sound selection (at the same time), i often use both these inputs connected to my voltage block for precise control of sound file and pitch. Disting can also record + tons of other functions (eg. it can even play .wav loops which it will sync to clock).
    Also, this is not a "Sampler" like it says in the title and description, it's a Sample Player, big difference :) Morphagene (for example) is a sampler.
    For the price i think they could have made it a bit more powerful when it comes to CV.. sure it's 24bit instead of "just" 16, and supposedly it has lower latency than Disting mk3 (and 4, i guess), but when it comes to latency manufacturers often have different ways of measuring those, so i wouldn't count on it until measuring it myself in practice.
    Good demo nontheless!

    • @onceuponasynth
      @onceuponasynth  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the suggestion, I'll check out the mk3. Also I've updated the title to say "sample", you're right it's not technically a sampler. Cheers.

    Damn...so this can't control the pitch of the samples with 1v/o CV? I would love to load up some .wav samples from Omnisphere and use a sampler module to act as a digital oscillator that I can control with a keyboard. Are there any eurorack modules that can accomplish this? If I could find a way to do this, it would really open up a lot of possibilities for my euro setup.

    • @DualNatureMusic
      @DualNatureMusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      it would be a lot cooler if it could be controlled with unquantized pitch cv.

    I'd like to see what waveshape that "sine" actually came out as....

    • @onceuponasynth
      @onceuponasynth  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      lol yeah it probably turned into a sine with a dead spot so more likely resembling a half-sine half-square wave. TipTop said that the reason this happened is that my wave was too short. You need at least 1024 samples in order for it to loop properly. So if I made a sine wave of at least 1024 samples it would sound like an actual sine wave.

    • @xeeton
      @xeeton 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tom Kellicut I wonder if that means that they need to be a _multiple_ of 1024 samples to loop seamlessly. Is that the case?

    Why does the single cycle sine wave not sound like a sine wave?

    • @onceuponasynth
      @onceuponasynth  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I'm not sure yet. I mentioned it in my conclusion at the end but I think there might be a small gap between two loops which causes the wave to be shaped more like a half-sine half-square wave, hence the added harmonics. Either that or maybe I did something wrong when exporting. I'm not sure if this module was designed to loop single cycle waves so I can't fault it. If anyone has better success with this on this module please let me know!

    • @domtak

      There is a minimum length for looping files on ONE of 1024 samples. I had that in an earlier draft of the manual but looks like it didn't make the final version.

    • @domtak
