A magnificent soul, kept young by his extraordinary life in music, joined with a magnificent ensemble of music-makers, performing one of the most sumptuous orchestral scores in the cannon - it seldom gets better! This is an exquisite performance.💐
On youtube you can find audio recording of this piece as well as Debussy’s nocturnes, conducted by Ernest Ansermet in 1957. Ansermet actually met Debussy and Ravel when conducting in France between 1915-1923. He consulted them on performing their work. Probably as definitive as it gets!
@@ocean_0602 ... Stokowski also heard Debussy conduct during his own early years as a conductor when visiting Paris and in his 1957 "Desert Island Discs" programme, one of his choices was "Sirenes" in his own Philadelphia Orchestra recording from 1939. In fact, during his Philadelphia years he made the first American recordings not only of the "Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune," the "Trois Nocturnes" and the "Danses sacree et profane" but also his own arrangements of "Clair de lune," "Soiree dans Grenade" and "La Cathedrale engloutie." Here's the link to his "Desert Island Discs" selection ... th-cam.com/video/VsX5QVDkf6g/w-d-xo.html
If the audience was decent, they would wait at least three seconds of respectful silence before raging into the mandatory applause ... the only thing i want to hear after this masterpiece is the magnificent silence that is part of the piece when it ends. Aside from this little problem, Leopold Stokowski did it in a very lovely way : he brought me back to the ancient times of humanity, when we were all living in perfect harmony with the natural laws, so far from the actual decadence and technological deadly machinery that is driving us now to our end. One way to fight against this horror is to allow ourselves to be touched by the beauty ... of a flower, a tree, a forest, a sunset on the sea, a butterfly riding on a slight breeze, or whatever marvel this unbelievable universe is offering to us. ♥
Note the free bowing at 9:30 and following - such a lush tone - together with a (very convincing) writing up by an octave of the violins shortly thereafter!!

A true master in his craft! Kudos to the winds and everyone else. This is super hard.
How could anyone question Stokowski´s artistic seriousness?
GORGEOUS

Do you think anyone would be able to tell that they were free bowing without seeing them, in other words, audio only?

Does annybody know, who is the principal flautist? Is it William Bennett? I think, he is playing.
Yes, it is William Bennett, principal flautist, alongside Roger Lord, principal oboe, both with the LSO for many years.
