My best friend Del, age 78, died last January. Because her family and friends were scattered and many unable to travel, there was not a funeral service. But Del always wanted Handel to be played at her funeral. This rendition of Largo would have been perfect.

I should imagine this is the sound of a soul on its way to Heaven with angel harps and music.
Now this is violin playing in the Grand Tradition! It’s a style from the Golden Age that is all but forgotten today. Mr. Zalai is a true “keeper of the flame.” He plays this piece as if he were an opera singer. Personally speaking, this how I like my Baroque music. Played on a modern instrument and with heart, gut, and soul.

Played on a Strad actually otherwise completely agreed. And the gut strings from the Heifetz setup make the sound even more mellow.
Antal is an absolute maestro, I once had the privilege to listen to him live.
The beauty and comfort and nobility of his performance are unrivaled, indescribable and off the charts
I love that the accompanying piano includes the oft-missing trill. Even most piano solo performances are missing it. But I think it really enhances the phrase, if done gently and smoothly, as was done here.

Even though I grew up listening to Handel and this piece of music, I never knew until today this was part of Xerxes. Handel has always been my favorite Baroque composer, and this is primus inter parus - first among equals.

A long time ago, the Boston pops orchestra did this with all violins joining in at mid point. It was an Arthur Fiedler classic arrangement.
