I bought a high-performance car (Charger Hellcat) and the dealer recommended the tire and wheel protection for $700. I took the contract and within the first 3 months I got 2 free tires due to unrepairable sidewall punctures. The tires going for almost $400 each plus mounting and balancing, I am probably one of the few who came out ahead of the game. The main concern would be a wheel replacement which could be $600-700.

I actually had a salesman charge me a $1000 deposit to test drive a used Camaro but would wave it IF MY HUSBAND came in to test drive it. Yes, I paid it and documented EVERYTHING because they offered a cheaper price IF MY HUSBAND came in to buy it. Yes I filed a suit against them and we ended up settling out of court.

That's funny to me. When a woman comes on the lot I am happy because it's usually women making this sort of decision. If a couple comes on the lot I talk to the woman unless they make it clear she's not in charge. And, invariably, men tell me "Well, I gotta ask the wife/girlfriend" before they write the check.

I was hit, T-boned by a Duelly raised pickup truck who never put his foot on the brakes and after slamming into my passenger side lifting the car and pushing it into on coming traffic he drove down the side of my car and stopped for a second and drove off only leaving his license plate. I got injured pretty bad, spinal injury. Forced me to eventually quit working and file medical bankruptcy and file for disability which after a 6.5 year fight finally won. I had money in the bank, enough to buy a Chevy Malibu cash or a KIA or Hyundai that I was looking at, I was considering maybe a Chevy Impala too and would only have to finance maybe $3,000.00 now I know from working in banking and doing both personal loans and car loans and home equity loans, a person must first give written permission for you to run a credit check and I went in to Chevy to see about test driving the two candidates I was thinking about buying, I was asked for my license which was pretty normal to make copy of and I think My SS# WHICH I ASKED WHY? GOT TOLD SOME ANSWER THAT JUST DIDN'T MAKE MUCH SENSE. The sales guy disappeared then came back after a short while with another guy behind him who didn't say anything but stood behind him, I got told they would call me when I could come back to test drive the cars as they needed appointments now because of something and a available salesman would contact me. I never got any phone call, I think they illegally ran a credit check found the medical bankruptcy and blew me off, of course not knowing or asking how I wanted to pay for or finance the car. Both KIA AND HYUNDAI DIDN'T follow up with one of the car colors I said I wanted in a certain model so not one of these places or their salesman sold a car or made any money when I could have bought any one of the 3 out of 4 totally cash.

We had a similar experience buying a new vehicle that had some typhoon damage. Salesman initially said all the damage would be fixed by them or they would discount for the cost of getting it fixed but when we got closer to making a deal he reneged and said he'd never said that (I had been taking notes). Then he said that he was wrong that he couldn't offer the lower price bc his manager wouldn't let him. We walked. Then he called back and said he got the lower price approved and set a date and time for us to come in. He blew us off as he was trying to make a sale to a different customer. We decided to leave so he chased after us and said that he couldn't bring it down to the price he said on the phone but could go $500 higher. We said "No" and left. He called again to tell us someone else was showing interest in the car and we better snatch it up. We told him good luck selling it to the other person. Then we found a better trim version of the vehicle with less damage for a lower price than he was trying to sell. That salesman didn't try to add anything on, immediately said "There's a $2k discount for all vehicles that were damaged by the typhoon" didn't say "I need to talk to my manager". Decent APR on that one (only vehicle we ever financed). They did not jerk us around. Other salesman called back again to say car was still available and we told him to pound sand and that we'd already bought a better vehicle.

And this is exactly what I was experiencing this past June. My brothers daughter, my niece, needed a car because she just graduated from high school and was going to college. Anyway, we hit this off the wall dealership not far from his house and looked at what was a nice looking car. The first thing the salesman wanted was that credit app. Now my brother doesn’t know how to deal with salesman, that’s why I went with them. I told the salesman that before we do anything, I want to test drive that car and I wanted the out the door on the road price of that car before any mention of money or financing. So he agreed. The car tested out great. The price was higher than advertised and I asked him why. He showed me the write up and said that there was this charge and that fee and so on. I said, I don’t have to pay for any of those by law. He said, you do here. I said no I don’t. So I told my brother and niece, let’s go and walked right out that door. Went to a Ford dealership in Timonium and got a car just like the one we looked at at a cheaper price. And that’s how you deal with crooks and scoundrels.

You can be nice to people without getting ripped off.
This year I had 2 bad experience with car dealers. The 1st was a used lot and they wanted way too much. The other was a brand dealership that scams people with cars that aren't there.
The 1st time I spent more time trying to actually negotiate with the owners. They were rude and didn't listen.
I didn't curse, I didn't yell, I didn't resort to any name calling. (Even though they probably deserved it.)
In the case of the later, the guy I spoke to their was just a young sales guy. I don't blame him for the bad policies of the company.
Anyway, being nice doesn't have to be weak.
I stood my ground in that 1st situation at the used lot and refused to buy it. Not cause I couldn't afford it, nut it because I knew the KBB value and didn't want to pay more.

The average consumer in most markets can't afford a Tesla.
Sorry but if you can spend upwards of a 100,000 car that will cost 10k to 15k for batteries in 10 years good for you. The vehicle will also be outdated technology by 10 then.
I buy new or slightly used and drive until dead. And I mean totally unrepairable. Last car 27 years old still looked and drove like new except a little paint issue. Heater switch went bad, caught leaves on fire in the duct work, burned to ground. My current car works perfectly fine some parking lot dings but is 22 years old. If possible will be driving 20 years from now. I can do a total rebuild of everything for way less than that Tesla.

Don't try and sell me on payments. Must watch your words close. On one deal I walked away from this was years ago. I said no 5 year loan. I wanted 4 years.
So they called called me back and said they were meeting my price. Drove 30 miles back. The price was 999.99 more. They told it's around the price 1,000 less. So they verbally rounded 999.99 down to 000.00.
Yet the payments were just about what I calculated at the current rate.
So what happened? Dealer said they played with interest. That didn't add up. I scoured the paper work so much BS on the document. What they did was change the terms to 4.5 years. Caught you. They came back with you said you did not want a 5 year loan. 5 and 4 was standard at the time.

      1. The lower end Tesla is around $30k. The average consumer can afford a Tesla if they can afford a new car at all. As an added bonus, you don’t have to haggle at a dealership.
      2. “In 10 years” is a fool’s argument. Almost no one keeps a car that long and at that age a fender bender will total your car. Good luck getting insurance for a salvage title.
      3. Your 22 year old car is far more likely to catch fire than any other type of car on the road
      4. As you trend toward buying new cars, they will all be so tech dependent that they will be crappy Teslas anyway.

They drove my old car and agreed to give me a decent price on trade (way more than I could have sold it for) and we were down to the price, hadn't talked about financing at all...he hadn't asked and I didn't bring it up. I opened my checkbook, wrote their name, signed it, and said, okay, what are we going to write in amount. He said a number, think it was 9500, I said, 8500, he said 9300 and I closed the check book, grabbed my keys and left. He called a couple days later and said how about 8700. I said to fill it with gas and that this was my first actual new car so I want to drive it off the showroom floor (so they detailed it even though it only had like 9 miles on it) and I went and got it on a Saturday.

I had to buy a car in a hurry after having one written off. I was recommended a Subaru by a satisfied friend. When I went to the West Yorkshire UK dealer the salesman gave me the keys to his car and said “see you when you get back” when we returned we asked how soon we could get one he told me fairly soon, but how about he knocks a couple of thousand pounds off the one we had driven, so we did.
Had it in a couple of days and still got it five years later with ZERO problems.
Best buying experience ever, thanks Matthew.

A few months ago I went with my dad to trade a car at a dealership he had been looking at. I always love doing this, he was a car salesman for almost 20 years, so it's fun to watch the cars salesman charisma shine.
During the process the saleswoman we were talking to, decided to pull out this $1,000 insurance thing on us. She said "this is a legal thing, all of the cars we sale have to have it, it's not a choice" and my dad said "ok, give me my keys back" the look on her face dropped. He went off on her about that's completely false, possibly illegal and he they don't remove it, he wants his keys back now so we can leave. She gets all apologetic but still says "I'll go ask my manager about it, I'll be right back".
She came back apologizing and said they would not only remove the fee, but include the insurance for free.

When my wife and I bought our first new car in 1998 we saw a newspaper ad for an incredibly cheap Subaru Legacy Wagon. The dealer showed us the car (manual windows, manual transmission, a complete stripper.) They said “nobody buys this, come look at this other one.” We said no thanks, we’ll take the cheap one. They actually refused to sell it to us, said it was their only one and they needed it for the ad. Basically saying it was a “Floor Model.” We pushed hard claiming false advertising and they finally agreed to sell it to us. We refused all options like undercoating etc and then the look on their faces when we didn’t finance it. We drove that car for 20 years.

While my partner was signing paperwork for the car, they had gotten 10 inquires about it. She's a sweet little thing. Even I was blown away that they had the car so cheap despite only missing the stereo. She was in really good shape and did not have a lot of mileage on her.

I used to work for Nissan Corporate finance once long ago (my first "big boy" job), and after several years of working with dealers on customer leases and loans, I knew all the tricks they pulled to get into a car. Then the day I needed to get a newer car as my current ride threw a rod, I went to the Nissan dealer down the street from me. I knew what I wanted (1996 Nissan Maxima), and I told the guy that I worked for Nissan finance, so I didn't need him trying to pull all the dealer tricks on me that they normally do.
Sure enough...guess what the bugger did? EVERYTHING that I told him not to try with me! I called him on every single one of this BS sales tactics, asked for a sales manager...and luckily the manager on duty was one that I worked with A LOT while at work! He took over, got me the car I wanted, at HALF the interest rate, with the warranty AND tire package included int he price, and removed the recon fee. Then he proceeded to rip the sales guy apart for trying to screw over someone who actually puts his deals through! It was a good day. :)

My Daddy took me in and he did exactly what you said - he had all of the paperwork printed out, a calculator, extra worksheets, pens, pencils, eraser, extra sheet of paper, all of the details of the car, etc printed out and ready to go. He's an Engineer so when the sales guy started to write fast, write all over the paper, and then draw a line for him to sign so he could "talk to the boss", he calmly took out another worksheet and filled out everything again and requested to speak to the "boss" using that paperwork. I learned long ago, when Daddy is in thinking mode, he will not be rushed, he will not negotiate until he understands what all the numbers mean, and he has zero problems telling a person to "sit down and cool out". While Daddy was doing his calculations, the salesdude said "wow, sir, is that a Superbowl ring" (it was an East Texas ring) to which he replied yes without missing a beat. "don't you want your daughter to have the best car we have" Daddy replied, "she doesn't matter right now". He got everything I wanted, he got a higher price for the trade in and a lower OTD price on the car. The contract was almost ripped up when he insulted my Daddy by saying "sir, if this check doesn't clear, we will have a problem". After my Mom and I gasped, Daddy said "my signature is my word. Is this a problem?". I still have the folder and all of the paperwork from this masterful 14 hour negotiation.

I applied and was approved for a new credit card. They informed me, after I asked, that yes it was a hard check, and it can affect my FICO score. If I go to multiple dealerships shopping for cars, the credit application checks will be on my report, and will be noted on the report. My credit is my business! And like the wait staff at your friendly restaurant, they only make money on tips (commission). Learn the game, have good credit or cash and play the game.
      - Being prepared is 90%. Going in w/o any idea of how car sales works, plays in their favor. Funny, when I became a customer, I knew the game... they don't like being played, but money is green.
      - End of year, end of month, becomes your friend, that one extra sale might bump their 25% commission to 30% retroactive to all their previous sales.
      - Prepare and pretend to enjoy your visit...at least for a few hours, they want to wear you down.
      - Bring your finances, they will make money on loan percentages from their banks. You have the right to refuse extras, esp extended warranties, which most likely will never be honored.
      - Concentrate on out the door price, they really hate that (OTD price)!
      - You can try to pit one dealer against another, but it's sorta like brotherhood of cops, they know by credit reports and word of mouth where you've been and where you might go. Just easier to ask for another salesperson in the same dealership, that, in of itself can make a world of difference. Plus, keep in mind, they'll generally hafto split the commission, but hey, not everyone gets along w the first salesperson they meet.
      - If your particularly not picky the color or brand, research and look for the oldest car on the lot, often time, mgt will put bounties on these cars just to rid them. (100.00 - 250.00 on top of commission to the salesperson who makes the deal).
      - Some of the sales force I've worked with were actually convicted felons that can't find a job anywhere else. Suite n tie with a friendly sociopathic demeanor may seem like they're doing everything they can to help you, when quite the opposite is true. Learn your car, learn how to spot flood damage, bondo, collision damage, pre check w your mechanic is paramount for used stock.
_ It is ufb that dealers still adhere to old school tactic selling cars, yet, I see it all the time, when helping friends, family, in-laws n outlaws.

in 2011 I purchased my last car from a dealership. I had suffered through this endless BS from the "team" way to often. It is a buyer beware situation at it's worst. I now see cars for what they really are, a "neccessary waste of money" and purchase 2 to 4 year old low mileage preowned from local individuals. I have saved many many thousands of dollars on interest and high payments doing these cash buys and have not had a single major issue. Thank you Car Edge for shining the light on this painful process.

Thanks Ray and Zach. Years ago, my ex-wife and I were shopping for a new car. They asked for the keys to look at our vehicle. An hour later after listening to their largely illegal spiel, I asked for my car keys. They said no that they are still inspecting it on a test drive. They repeated no and said that we needed to start signing paperwork before we could see our vehicle. This was before cell phones. I found a pay phone and called my best friend who was a police officer. He arrived quickly with 2 other officers. Things became very difficult very quickly for the salesman, sales manager and finance manager. The car miraculously appeared.
From then on I have considered most car dealers like wretched pedophiles.
    PREDATORY, MANUPULATIVE, OPPORTUNISTIC SOCIOPATHS

I gave the key to our vehicle after they implored us. I just wanted to see what the dealer would offer. I already had a family friend that was interested in the potential trade in. They eventually bought it.
My ex-wife and I had grown tired of dealer sales tactics. We realized that the staff was trying to cornhole us. They could sense that I'm sure. They refused to return the vehicle to us. That is clearly illegal. My friends from the police arrived. Our car was found. The salesman, sales manager and finance manager spent the evening at the police station. This was not the first time this dealership had done that. The dealership went out of business 5 years later after another franchise for that automaker opened in a nearby parish.

Dealerships are, also, the worst place to have work done on your vehicle. I already knew that from my dad teaching me years ago, so I use a small shop I get to know well and can trust.
One particular year, the place I usually used for new tires didn't have the tires I needed, so I had to bring my truck to a dealership. They put on the tires while I waited with my daughter (she was 7 at the time).
The manager came out to talk to me and let me know they were almost done. He asked if I was in a hurry because if I had a few extra minutes, they could change the oil, too. It was more expensive than my husband doing it, which he always did, but he was on deployment at the time and still had 3 months until he got home. The truck was already there so I agreed.
At some point in our conversation, he started talking to my daughter. She told him she was excited about the new tires (she loves cars like me) because we were going on a class field trip at the end of the week. I was going to be one of the drivers. Keep that in mind ...
We waited a while longer until I was finally called to the back where the garage was. The manager brought me to my truck while telling me about the tires and oil change. I noticed my truck was still on the lift, so I knew immediately he was about to pull some kind of B.S. He proceeds to tell me there is a crack in my transmission and it's dangerous to drive with it like that, "especially with all those kids for the field trip."
I just stared at him. I think it was pretty obvious to him that I wasn't buying it, so he proceeded to point to the ground and say, "That's all the transmission fluid that spilled out. We added some more for you, but it won't stay. You really need to fix that crack. We can start today and get it back to you before Friday." I looked down at the black fluid (dirty oil from the oil change) and back up at him. I held my tongue when I really wanted to tear him apart for using my kids against me.
I noticed the mechanic who had been working on my truck stare at him for a minute like he was in disbelief of the B.S. the guy was saying. I told him I didn't have the money and I would get my husband to take a look when he got home from deployment. He insisted it couldn't wait for my husband and then said they could offer me a loan on the cost. I looked over at the mechanic again because I was curious if he was like his manager. He rolled his eyes, shook his head, and walked away. You know it's bad when his own people were against him.
I actually had to argue with the guy about not touching anything else on my truck. He was clearly annoyed and said he would do a final check on the work and have it back to me. I said, "No, I want HIM to finish the work. He's done fine. He can finish. I would prefer you not going near my truck again." Several of the mechanics kind of snickered and the one working on my truck came back. The mechanic told me he was all done and would bring it around the front for me. He lowered it before the manager could say anything else.
I think if the manager had not brought me back there and had that conversation with me in the waiting room, he would have lied to the mechanics about what I wanted. I might have even believed him except that I know the difference between oil and transmission fluid, and his condescending behavior pissed me off. Incidentally, that same transmission is still going strong after 13 years.

Three cheers! I watched this last year and greatly appreciated your insights. Last week, I helped my son purchase his first car, and the used dealership tried their smooth talk about some odd "$300 service processing fee" and I told them "I don't care if you charge zero or charge $2k processing fee since all I really care about is 'walk out the door price.' " I explained all their tactic, and I don't care if they do that or if they have a higher window price with zero processing fee; the sales person knew then that either I was a wizard or I had some coaching. They didn't try any further mumbo-jumbo, and I did buy the car since I held them to their "out the door price." Thank you Coach, CarEdge!

I drove the car, and liked it and decided to look into buying it. I asked for an OTD price listing.. Apparently that threw them a curve ball, where it took them about 15 minutes.. When I got the list I nearly fell on the floor laughing.. For this $6995 car, their OTD price was OVER $10K. I told them I did not want, nor will I pay for, all of the bullshit addons this list had. Back in the early 1980s, my wife and I were looking at buying a new car from GM dealership. We were planning to trade in a car on the deal . We were quoted an interest rate, final price of the car and what they would give on the tradein. At that time we were quoted about a 7% interest rate which was good at the time. But when they put the papers in front of us to sign, the intreat rate jumped to 22% and we had no credit issues. I said that was a deal killer and they would not return the keys to our car. No documents were signed. After an hour of arguing, I said I had enough. Either give the keys back or I am going out into the show room and start jumping on a Corvette. Five minutes later I was walking on top of the Corvette and the keys magicaly appeared.
BTW - that dealership was later indicted for those high pressure/deceptive sales tactics and driving new cars from the factory to the dealership with the speedometer disconnected to avoid paying transportation costs, yet charging the customers those costs when they bought a new car. That dealer soon closed its doors.

The first thing i ever learned about going to buy a car from any dealership (new or used) is they need to sell the car to you more than you need to buy it from them. Therefore you as the buyer have all of the power and don't hesitate to walk out and go to a different dealership. Ppl need to keep this in mind when car shopping so that they don't accept whatever the dealership tells themat face value. Ive had very good experiences with all of my car purchases. Ive gotten what I wanted at the price I wanted or I walked. I also do my research online before I go in so I usually know what I'm looking for when I get there.

The best car deal I ever made was on a new car purchase during Covid. No dealers had any inventory and any car had to be built to order. I knew what the cost was when ordered, no mark ups or add on’s. Left my deposit and waited four weeks. Car came in and we sat down to do the paperwork. Already was pre approved at 3% if they could match or beat it fine, if not would use my credit union. They matched it. Of course they tried their sales pitch for additional gimmicks such as tire and wheel protection and all that which I declined. All I wanted extra was factory backed warranty for the life of the loan. I was in and out in less then an hour. If I ever have to do another car deal I’m going to do it exactly the same way again. Not about to deal with dealer mark ups or any of that other BS, plus I get the car I want and ordered.

I picked 3 cars to test drive before I got there, told them I had pre-approval and would require they pay my registration. It was a done deal and the only reason it took 4 hours was because I couldn’t decide between 2 cars. I test drove 1 an additional time and picked that one. Easy peasy. It was seamless and wonderful! Pre-approval, research, knowing your numbers and calling ahead helped tremendously!

You guys are always entertaining and pass along a lot of good information. Some advice for the un-initiated: if a trade in is part of the deal, KEEP YOUR KEYS in your pocket and DO NOT SIGN your title over until the final contract is in front of you ready to sign. Once they get your keys and signed title in hand you have lost most of your leverage and they can and will make last minute additions to your contract. When I first started buying cars in the 1960s it wasn't this bad. With most major new car dealerships you only negotiated the discount off MSRP, the trade in (if any) and paid 3% sales tax plus $20 or $25 in tag/title fees.

At least he told you why. The guy we had didn’t even tell us until after We did the test drive. They said the online price was only if you finance with them but they added fees that added 5000 protection package to the price due to my higher interest rate. I already had financing so I asked for the OTD price with my financing. Almost 7000 more. I walked and didn’t mind. what burned me up was them calling me every freaking day for a month knocking 250 dollars of here and there and then making it seem like it was the deal of the century to pay 6500 more than what they advertised.

About 7 years ago I saw a car advertised online at a new to the area, used car dealership. Like many dealerships nowadays they advertised that they put EVERY car they offer for sale through a rigorous pre-sale inspection. I liked the car, though it had high miles for the price and I thought that that would work in my favor when bargaining on a price. After the test drive the salesman directed my towards the sales manager. Before going in to start negotiations I asked what kind of " doc fee " they charged. Answer was $895. I balked at paying what I felt was an excessive fee on an UNDER $5,000 car. The sales manager said that "... everyone pays it, even he had to pay it when he bought a car there. " I told him he was crazy if they charged him $900 and that I wouldn't pay it.
To shorten a long story: a few months later that dealership closed and eventually all the other dealerships in that fledgling chain closed.
A $900 document fee on a 9 year old used car is ridiculous.
A $1995 fee in this scenario is equally laughable.

I used to have a 140 mile round trip commute, so I purchased a Prius. After 100K miles I figured I'd get a new one, so I got pre-approved for a loan from my credit union and walked into the dealer, blank check in hand. I started asking all kinds of questions and declined to do a credit check. The sales manager then told the sales guy helping me "This guy is just wasting your time". I then pulled out the blank check, tore it up in front of him, dropped the pieces on the floor and walked away. I ended up maintaining my Prius myself (did an at home traction battery swap for $900) and finally got rid of it with over 340K miles. I sold it to a 3rd party for $4K and bought a Mazda 6 with 0% financing (by this time I was working from home and vowed to never buy another Toyota).

I have a friend who worked for a short time at a used car dealership in my hometown many years ago. He told me about some of the BS they showed him to use on customers. One of the wildest stories was about a couple of his fellow salesmen who carried worn out, loose screws, nuts and bolts in their pockets. Whenever a woman or an old person drove onto the lot in an older model vehicle, they would hustle out to greet them....and secretly drop some of the nuts, bolts and screws on the ground behind or under the vehicle. Then they would FAKE concern and tell the driver "Oh gosh, look at this, your car is falling apart. It's unsafe. You can't drive it any further. You need to replace it IMMEDIATELY!" Sadly, it worked more often than you might think.

So I called, and everybody gave me the runaround until I spoke with the guy running the place. About 30 mins after our conversation the ext warranty was reimbursed to my account balance. Shortly after that they changed names too. Oh yeah I forgot the low price sticker yet never told me a total just monthly. I have worked at dealerships all my life but I keep my experience in the market to myself. I was quite surprised with the deal, I declined the extended warranty and silly markups and forced the dealer to replace the floor mats free of charge and have a additional spare key made because I had to buy a Toyota key which was over $100.00 once. I didn’t steal the car, but I didn’t get raped on it either. That is all I ask. When the sales person gives me the "best price," I take a moment to call my wife (I step away from the desk for "privacy) and we chit chat. I go back to the sales person and explain that my wife is cheap and we need a better price. Most often, the sales person goes to talk to their manager and comes back with a better price. I call my wife again and come back needing a bit better price (and blame the wife!). Last time I did this, we ended up saving almost $150/month over the term.

A new one (to me, anyway) that I ran into a few years ago was the tracker. This Chicago-area dealer (a red flag of its own) wanted me to pay an additional $1200 for the tracker and get tied into a pricey monthly monitoring plan. Did some research when I got home and found out that it is an inventory-tracking convenience for them, virtually a requirement by their insurance company, and cost a tiny fraction of what they wanted to charge me.

    • @daverothman4381
      @daverothman4381 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I was a mechanic a while back and remember the tracking BS. Every single new car had to have one installed. The tracker itself was a very basic "cheap piece of electronics " that couldn't possibly cost more than $5 or $6,at most. And yes,it was initially for the dealership to keep track of their own car inventory, in case it was stolen, etc. They got an insurance break for installing it on all their cars. When the car is then sold they leave the tracker installed and just sell the customer the tracker and service at an astronomical price ,compared to what it cost them.
They do the same thing with financing. Even if you qualify for a low interest rate, they add an additional rate and keep the balance.
I experienced this firsthand when my wife and I were buying a car. I calculated the interest rate they were charging us at about 29%!
We walked, and bought the same car at a different dealership at about 8% interest.
The difference was over $140 a month in the payment. It was an $18,000 car that would have ended up costing about $30,000 had we went with the original financing! Do your homework.

First dealer charged 995 extra for that. I think the second was 895. The second dealer literally said, "So, we pass that fee onto you"
I didn't think it was fair--not to me or any other customers. If someone wants to be tracked, offer it as an optional service. But don't make us pay for it just bc your lots got targeted.
Thankfully, after negotiations, I was able to get It removed

Just went through the buying process for a new Audi. Various dealers pulled all the stunts. Got $1,000 paint and fabric protection package spiel. They insisted the manufacturer puts it on the cars. Said I wont pay it. They removed it. So I bought the car primarily because of the Audi, Costco incentives, plus they gave me $2k more on my trade-in then other dealers. When I asked about the warranty protection on the paint and fabric, she told me I don't get the warranty because I wouldn't pay for it. "But you told me it's on the car, why wouldn't I get the warranty coverage?" I'll address this during the dealership review. The other sleazy deal was at BMW I test drove a car and told them I was a cash buyer. Ok great I worked up 2 quotes cash and financing. If you finance you get $1,500 from BMW towards the car, and you can pay it off in 6 months with no penalties. Hmmmmm OK i can do that for $1,5k! When I looked at the paperwork at home they lowered my trade-in by, guess what, $1,5k! So no benefit to me for financing. Same deal except now I'm financing. Another put a fee of $250 on the quoted, When I challenged it he said "oh its just a placeholder in case you finance." Again, told them it was cash. The best advice is they are going to try and screw you at every chance. But if your here, you probably know that already.

If an AC blows **extremely** cold air, colder than normal, it's probably extremely low on refrigerant oil. This will cause compressor failure. Lot of times when there is a major leak, or installing new components, a mechanic forgets to bring up the refrig oil up to the proper level, and the system runs 'dry'... Lack of oil lowers viscosity, therefore more liquid refrigerant sprays into the evaporator, thus cooling it way below normal (10-15deg, should be 40-45deg) A big red flag is **frost** on the suction line (should be liquid condensate only)!

Recently changed my daughter's car for her. Hers was 10 years old, the new one she was buying was 2 years old. Her old car had a few small dings and paint scratches but was in decent, aka 'good' condition for its age. Dealer's car had several paint imperfections (looked like someone had washed the car with a gritty sponge). Dealer's response was that "well, it is 2 years old, you can't expect it to be in showroom condition" (I'm paraphrasing here, but you get the gist). Looking at my daughter's car they pointed out the imperfections and dings seemingly knocking tens of pounds off the trade-in value for each one they mentioned. When I tried the "Well it is 10 years old, it is hardly going to be in showroom condition" argument, it didn't seem to matter and we had to take the hit on the price. Car dealers - wouldn't wee on them if they were on fire!

Always focus on the coldness of the AC. Bring a vent gauge to the dealership just in case.

I brought an friend around to different Toyota dealers to buy out her lease when it ended. You would think they would just finance the remaining balance and we were on our way. Horrible time. Multiple dealers were refusing to make a deal without her buying a warranty, even though in the contract it says the warranty wasn’t necessary. Kept on circling back and never would move forward. The one dealer that agreed for a straightforward deal ended up trying to charge $900 for an inspection fee when we showed up. Even though she was literally buying it as is. Horrible weekend and walked out of many dealers. Definitely left a bad taste in my mouth.
I’m in the military and see predatory loans and car dealerships all the time for the new guys coming in that want a new charger with no credit score and a $2000 a month income. I wish they would spend the time learning from resources, like this channel. for instance.

One tactic I've used with dealers is to tell them with the amount of money I'm spending, that I need to think about it 24 hours before committing to the deal. That allows me to get out of the dealership and to think through whether they're offering a fair deal or not without the pressure of having sales staff around. This tactic also allows you to bargain through text, phone, or email until you're ready to come back in on a deal you're comfortable with. It the deal is even $.01 off what we've agreed to, I'm walking.

so you went to buy a car with no idea or plan on what to spend. brilliant. 24 hrs praying to jesus won't make it any better. know ahead of time what you will pay withint 50 bucks either way. oh and talk to you bank about interest, resale value and other such things you never consider

You’re making a lot of assumptions that aren’t true. I had a good idea of my budget and what I was looking for. But, I needed time to process the details of the exact car and transaction. So, I gave myself the time by giving myself an out at the dealership. A salesman has worked hundreds or thousands of transactions and they are good at putting pressure on someone even if it’s a low key approach. Getting away from the dealership and salesperson gives me the opportunity to somewhat level the playing field.

I remember with one car we bought, the salesman (more honest than most) asked us what it would take to put us in the vehicle we were looking at. We had some money, and I said, Best scenario? Paid for, off the lot." We got the car, paid for. You don't have to go through financing; I had heard that had to happen, from a prior dealer.

well.. that's called being a wanker
THAT'S NOT WHAT YOU DO (Ex Professional Salesman here)
      let me break it down
HIS GOAL : to sell you the car at his price and make you think your got the best deal in the world
YOUR GOAL : to buy a car at a price that you agree is reasonable.
Perhaps also.. to think about it (which is fair)
      YOUR TACTIC DOESN'T WORK BECAUSE....
You said "I need to think about it BEFORE COMMITTING TO THE DEAL"
you think this allows you to leave, LOL....... Maybe.. Maybe not.
but if you do, we'll call you back tomorrow and if you back out you will get the headache of your life
HERE IS A BETTER WAY TO DO IT , More tactful
Do not tell him what your amount is
Do not say "I need 24 hours to think about it" Because
      1. No one needs 24 hours to think about it, that's obvious bullshit
      2. sir.. if you sign up now, you get 7 days cooling off period to think about it and cancel anyway if you like
(see.. CHECK MATE), don't say that !!
      DO THIS...
      1. Never sit at the desk.......... EVER !!!!
      2. After the test drive, Go into the dealership, calmly, Ask him for a coffee before you sit down.
Tell him you need to go to the toilet while he makes the coffee *he's not gonna object)
      3. Tell him after he hands you the coffee as you come out of the toilet.. say ..
"sorry, i apologize, i forgot that i have an urgent appointment, i appreciate your time" (don't say THANKS FOR YOUR TIME, say I APPRECIATE YOUR TIME)
      then say
"Give me a call tomorrow and we'll talk further"
HE HAS ONLY 2 OPTIONS HERE
      1. Let's you leave and says "Ok no problem i'll speak to you tomorrow"
(UNDERSTAND...... He does this so as to not lose the control and not to create negativity)
if he creates negativity and becomes the bad guy, he knows you can walk away and blame him for it.
in this scenario you smile and walk away
      2. he can get the shits and become the bad guy.
      if that happens you say
"mate, i was willing to be polite, there's no need to be a dickhead, but since you want to be... FORGET THE DEAL, i don't deal with rude people"
      then walk away politely
THAT'S HOW YOU GET OUT OF IT .
Your way is very predictable and we know what you're doing
My Way... leaves the salesman confused
Now if he does Option 1, then calls the following day. Just say
"Look, after that appointment yesterday that i needed to go to, my life has taken many different directions
and my priorities have changed. Mate, i do thank you for your time but unfortunately i'm not in a position now to buy a car, i will however keep your number handy and call your when 'i'm ready.. thanks again"
      IF YOU DO THAT
      He has no way out.
      he has 1 option
he can keep calling every 3 months until the end of time
but realistically, in 6 months time you can just say... Mate, Look, i'll give you a call when i'm ready, it's pointless calling me every 3 months
      but he will try
      See..
      YOU'VE BEEN POLITE
YOU'VE STRESSED A PERSONAL URGENCY AND PRESENTED IT AS GENUINE (he can't rebutle this)
Nor does he actually know if you're bullshitting about it (he can guess. . but he knows that he doesn't actually know)
YOU'VE GIVEN HIM A FOLLOW UP NUMBER
YOU'VE GIVEN HIM A TIME TO CALL BACK IN THE NEAR FUTURE
and then you've backed away by using THIS...
      A Salesman is taught....
Something has changed in the customers life at THIS POINT IN TIME that has causedthem TO BELIEVE they now NEED A CAR
      You can change this by
      - Having something else CHANGE IN YOUR LIFE
      - that thing overrides the first thing
      - You now believe You no longer need a car
      - This is based on IT'S NO LONGER A PRIORITY
therefore, the Motivation to buy the car is gone...... AS SUCH, HE HAS NO POWER OVER YOU.
THAT'S HOW YOU DO IT , Mate
do it tactfully, with a degree or class, Always be polite
      and remember
I'TS A GAME , HE PLAYS A GAME, SO DO YOU
and there are no hard feelings because.... the nature of the game is....
You will try to control me and i'll try to control you.
the better man will gain control of the weaker
if he realizes what you did, he can't cry, Because if he does, He's a little bitch.
and if he fronts you about it, say
"Mate... circumstances did really change in my life, but, i tried to be respectful to you, i was polite, wasn't i?
there's no need to have a whinge, it is what it is"
this is your last way of saying "I still have control over you"
if he carries on tell him to fuck off
this is like saying "now i'm no longer polite and putting you in our place"
A REAL SALESMAN UNDERSTANDS ANOTHER SALESMAN
and the rules go like this
      - he will always try to take advantage at first
      - You make him understand you won't be taken advantage of
      - You make him understand you're also not being rude
      - Make him understand you are not his bitch
      - Make him understand you respect the game
      - He should then show the respect back
AFTER THIS, IT JUST COMES DOWN TO THE RAW FACTS
      - What car do you want
      - Do you have a trade in
      - Are you paying cash or finance
      - Can we agree on a price or can we not
THAT'S ALL A DEAL EVER IS
The rest in the middle is all bullshit and clouds to cover up the tricks..
      Blow the clouds away
don't be smart towards him, But respectful instead
JUST DO THE DEAL or DON'T
      that's it
if someone becomes rude.......... THEY LOSE !!!
that's how the game is played

When I bought my first car, they did #3. They sold me an extended warranty for a lower percentage rate. It was cheap enough, and I was young enough that now I've learned - but those guys do this for a living, and make it sound convincing!

This was a fun video and well worth watching. None of this has ever worked on me, though I’ll admit in my 20s some of these tactics would have given me pause and made me think long and hard. I’m in my 50s now and have bought from many dealers and have seen some attempted shenanigans, especially in the finance department.

First thing they learn is to lie and misrepresent after discarding any semblence of ethics.....I 50 years,I have had ONE salesman who did'nt try ANY of these tactics............1969,my FIRST car,69 SS396 Chevelle traded to ANOTHER dealer who HAD tried this sh*t ...........EVERY car purchase included at least two of these tactics since that day. They don't have enough gumption to rob banks or liquor stores so they become Car Salesmen..............FACT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My last F&I guy pulled an illegal move by telling me the bank wanted me to buy a warranty for them to finance the car. At this point, he didn't know I was already financed through NFCU. When I told him that NFCU didn't require a warranty and gave me 3.99, his entire demeanor changed. He went from my best friend to as cold as ice and wanted me gone asap.

Like the format of the video! It really helps and shows the "sales" guy acting like your friend usually has other motives and not an advocate for you...even if they act like they're doing you a solid with great "deals". Got to go in prepared and knowledgeable or expect to over pay.

I am constantly having to explain to my 22 year old stepson that being cordial in a 10-20 minute interaction with someone, or even longer, does not make someone a "nice person". Especially when their goal is to sell you something. Literally one of the first rules of sales is to make someone like you. I don't want to make him jaded or suspicious of everyone, but the kid is so eager to bond with people /be accepted, it makes him an easy mark for people who are only looking out for their own interests.

I've had many occasions when some "friendly" sales guys and gals (let's be inclusive here👍) casually walked up to me, struck a conversation, then snuck in a sale after a few lines. If I'm not in the mood, I'll just shoo them away. If I'm in the mood and have some free time, I'll prolong the conversation as long as possible before turning down the sales pitch.

Salesmen aren't that different than telemarketing scammers. Talk fast, assertively and use as much jargon (but make it seem like it's not a big deal and SOP) and get you to do a bunch of stuff you're not interested in doing just to see and/or test drive a car you're interested in. In these situations, I always remind myself that they are trying to get me to buy THAT DAY and maximize margins for their business (ad ons, etc.). I have to remember that much of the power lies with me. I'm the one spending money or not, so I need to manage the entire process and whether I just walk away.
