There are other buses you can take ADO from cancun to mahahual and then caribe to xcalak. The ADO also goes to bacalar which I would recommend over chetumal.
You are absolutely right Jon! ADO is a very comfortable way to travel to Mahahual. And Bacalar is a fantastic place - reminds us of Tulum 10 years ago when it wasn't overrun with coffee shops and yoga studios.
Hi Fer, when it comes to Xcalak the cost of living depends a lot on what kind of accommodation you choose. Will you rent? Buy? Also keep in mind that because it's remote, things like groceries and sundries are pretty expensive so unless you make a trip to Chetumal (you'll probably need a vehicle) things add up a little faster that, say, PDC where everything is right close by.
