Chasing rumours of fossil penguins - fossil hunting a new site

  • I heard rumours about a fossil site where a penguin had been found in recent years so I just had to go check it out! It's always interesting fossil hunting in a new location as you have to first figure out what age the rocks are and which ones contain the fossils! It took me a while to get going but managed to find some really good fossils!
I haven't done a prep video in a while as I am hard at work on the giant 50lbs crab. I'm more than a 100 hours into it already and probably have at least 60 more to go, it's a beast and my most ambitious prep job jet!

It may be too late to have a guess on the Jasper, but I'm guessing 187g.
Mamlambo, I just happened upon your channel tonight and I have to tell you that you just reignited my mineral and fossil collection spark. I had gotten a Geology (Geosciences) Minor in university purely because I loved looking at and holding all different kinds of 'rocks' and had used a rock tumbler for a while to polish up some of my favourite gemstone beach & mine finds, but never had thought to scour a rocky beach for fossils! I was already blown away, but then upon realising you were here in NZ too has made me want to leave my house at midnight to go in search.
Although, I'm up in Auckland and based on the waterside places I've been so far within an hour radius, I would assume there's not all too much around here and would need to travel much farther south (likely near the west or bottom of the South Island for best chance?).
Any tips would be much appreciated! Or to come learn for you yourself haha

13:35 for stuff like that, it would be a decent investment to get a second hand jeweler's wire stone saw (i think that's what they're called) that uses diamond wire to cut the stone. I don't have one, but i bought four meters of the wire they use and converted a grinder to cut concrete for whenever we do analysis on it. On fleaBay, it's actually quite cheap. Submerged in a bath of water, it could cut excess material in under a few hours. Better than grinders or cutting wheels for sure. Just a thought.

This is gnarly. I love stuff like this. It's hard to word it exactly but I just love "finding stuff". Like metal detecting, finding a fossil or just finding something on the ground or semi-buried. I feel like I would nearly have a heart attack from excitement if I found some cool stuff like this. But I live in Arkansas in the US - I mean, there's a gravel/sand processing plant by the Arkansas River and my old school and lots of other places used pebbles/pea gravel from this place and I remember I used to find tons of little shell fossils in them on the playground at school. But Arkansas is pretty far from the ocean and I don't think many people find big/substantial fossils around here. People mainly find arrowheads from native tribes.

Hi mate been a while since I’ve been on the TH-cam. Actually my daughters horse decided he would jump into a barbed wire fence, and after weeks of dressings, vet bills bloody high vet bills, spending money on medicine and expensive horse feed, the silly animal is getting better. Looking forward to the big crab making its appearance, and the skull I have been nagging you about. Great to see you again, take care and remain COVID free. Cheers from the land of silly expensive horses.
