  • The life and music of bebop great Bud Powell, presented by Bruce Dudley. Bruce is joined by bassist Roger Spencer, drummer Marcus Finnie, and trumpeter Rod Preacherman McGaha. The program was recorded at the Steinway Piano Gallery of Nashville and is presented in cooperation with the Steinway Gallery.
Pianist Bud Powell was a leading figure in the development of bebop in the 1940’s. A virtuoso instrumentalist, he is credited with adapting the style of Charlie Parker to the piano. A brilliant composer as well, his writings are among the most imaginative in modern jazz. An early protégé of Thelonious Monk, Powell was a regular participant in the bebop sessions at Minton’s Playhouse, and appeared on classic recordings with Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Max Roach. Considered a troubled genius, Powell had frequent legal problems and psychiatric hospitalizations, and he apparently never recovered from a beating by police early in his career. From 1959 to 1963 he lived in Paris, where he continued to perform and record. He returned to New York in 1964, where he died from tuberculosis and alcoholism in 1966, at the age of 41.
A brilliant jazz pianist, composer, and educator, Bruce Dudley received his doctorate from the University of Colorado and serves on the faculty of Belmont University, Vanderbilt University Blair School of Music, and the Nashville Jazz Workshop. Bruce has made a study of Bud Powell’s music and improvisational style and has taught classes on this at the NJW.

I must say the pianist has really absorbed Buds’ style and the trumpeter has absorbed Fats. I’m happy to know musicians are keeping that tradition alive

This is a refreshing and positive perspective potrayal of Bud Powell dispite the negative and discouraging information on the gentle and genius Powell. Bud's contribution in the jazz scene canot be discounted and jazz has inherited so much from him . To me this is a tribute to the man who's jazz language was understood by disciplined and knowledgeable artists as well critics. He surely made the artworld an exciting and creative place.

Bud Powell is the real symbol of the Bebop piano the same as Charlie Parker is the real symbol of the Bebop alto saxophone. Everyone has a teacher or mentor so was Bud, Monk was that influence. Well done guys this is an excellent presentation of Bud Powell's music. AWESOME!

I think it’s great what you are doing to showcase Bud’s music. I’m a bassist and study guitar and piano. I’m retired now but itching to play more. I have read books on Bud and many other great jazz musicians. Thanks for posting

You have to admire the amazing powers of discrimination that enable the SARS-CoV-2 virus to know not to infect a trumpeter, while a drummer or a bass player are absolutely fair game unless they muzzle up.

Ha! In fact, the drummer's plastic visor would be useless in preventing him either getting infected or passing on an infection to a colleague. The bass player's surgical mask would be marginally more effective, but this type of mask is not suitable to protect anyone indoors either. To get protection, a well-fitting (preferably fit-tested) N95 respirator mask would be needed.
It's not a laughing matter. Barry Harris contracted Covid-19 after going onstage at an indoor venue in NYC to honour him. He died a few days later. At the start of the pandemic, the wonderful Denver bebop saxophonist Freddie Rodriguez got Covid-19 and died in hospital soon after. These are just two, but the pandemic took a large toll on elderly jazz musicians. 😢

    • @neilsaunders6009

Yes. Quite apart from the click-baity use of Bud Powell (one of my heroes, as it happens) to sell the video, the muzzles (except for the trumpeter - strangely exempt from the risk of infection, such is the devious and inscrutable nature of the SARS-CoV-2 virus) earned this video a thumbs down from me!
