Comfrey is a very amazing plant ! I've grown it ( blocking 14 ) since 1978. I live in USA Tennessee (zone 7 spring here ) Comfrey is coming up. " THEY " say to not take it internally ! Lol. Based on a rat experiment where the rats were fed it as their only food , for 2 years , and that made the veins in their liver get bigger. A human would need to eat 70 pounds a day for life to have similar affects. I use it for tea to drink and cook it as a green . I keep some blended up in fridge just in case of a cut or bruise. As in all plants , the roots are 10 times stronger than the leaves. So you can use the leaves on burns and cuts. The roots are used on " clean " injuries . Skin will grow over the wound including 3rd degree burns . Skin not scabs !! In WWII the military done research on Comfrey for burns. Using RAW Comfrey leaves ( blended up ) with raw garlic and raw honey ( applied to wound ). Healed in short time. Put on and leave a week to 10 days and reapply if unneeded. " THEY " Considered it the best thing in the know world for healing burns, but also considered it a catastrophic failure , because it could only be used fresh ! They couldn't synthesize anything from it.! I could bore you for hours . . . days . . . on how many people I have seen heal ( help heal , GOD actually heals ) . I can't tell you to take it internally. But most countries use it that way. I take a few ounces a day ( in milk , tastes like cucumber ) when it's growing ( first spring plant and last to die ). Applied to ( blended and strained juice ) rash ( poison oak or diaper rash etc ) will heal in a day to 3 days. It was in most herb gardens in 1700s. Settlers brought it with them ( real Comfrey ) . The first bone breaks were set with it ( before that most broken bones ( legs and arms )were cut off before gangrene set in ( before modern antibiotics ). The soil around Comfrey is always the most amazing soil ! It mines nutrients from up to 40 feet ( 13 ish meters ) the roots feed the soil microbes and leaves are constantly dying ( just 1 or 2 at a time ) to make its own mulch. Sorry so long , but it bothers me when " they " say it WILL harm you. They tell you to take their " safe " ( poisons ) meds. God makes plants for your food and medicine. It's free and healthy ( no kill you side effects ). Just my thoughts. Be politically correct and believe all " they" say , or be healthy and use herbs as they are meant to be used.
Kerry, don’t app apologise for the lengthy comment. It was full of enriched information that is very appreciated. It is hard to mine for correct information when “they” have a vested interest in less natural remedies. Thank you for your insight. I suspected as much. @@UrbanHomesteadArtist That is correct man. I go by Dean. I have used the herb ( suggested it too People ) for cuts , burns , cancer ( Shhh it cures that too ). God does. My best example was a guy that had harness horses ( to pull a plow ) their necks got rubbed raw and infected . . . vet stuff wasn't working . . .so I blended (add a little water to get it to blend ) him a quart of leaves to rub on the horses ( red inflamed raw necks . He put it on the horses and in 3 days their necks were pink and had skin again. He said if it was that good for animals it had to be good for people !! I said yes it is. Nice video! I really appreciate you taking the time to show us not only how you use the leaves but how you go about propagating it as well. I started comfrey last year and was very pleased by how well my three plants did. I saw on another video (not sure whose channel) a method of "stepping over" the plant once it flowered and I tried it out with great results. Once the tallest portion had flowered I bent it over to the ground, making sure not to break the stem. The base of the plant (at the base of the flowering portion) shot out even more growth and the stem that was bent over started producing even more leaves. It was like turning one plant into two without having to do any digging. I used the leaves to make tea and also discovered that adding blended leaves to a new compost pile is a great way to get the pile cooking quickly. Thank you for sharing!
I came back to add, thank you for sharing that. That technique is new to me. My comfrey hasn’t flowered as yet but I’ll try as you can never have enough leaves. You are correct - it does help activate the compost.
Feeding any fresh food offsets food costs and in my opinion, gives them a happier, healthier life. It all gets composed. It is healthy for them and they LOVE it!
I purchased by mail, 3 little root pieces much like ones you showed, in early may. I still don't have any signs of growth. I've pretty much given up on them any suggestions?
They are pretty hardy. Depending on your climate and season they may take a while to pop up. The ones I bought originally took a while from memory but my cutting (in a different season) sprouted quickly. They may still grow.
just wondering if this plant is one to plant in each vegetable bed for the nutrient value ? which bunnings mix are you using please.. and what do you use in the garden beds from bunnings?
If you don’t have a lot of space I would plant them at the base of beds or in the paths to catch run off and bring it back up. Then you can chop and drop into your beds. I used the cheapest potting mix usually but that day a tomato mix - just because it was there. They won’t stay in the pots too long so you don’t need expensive stuff. Most of the bags now are more bark than soil anyway. I try get soil in roots as soon as I can but didn’t have any that day.
no. Don't plant in beds! Use this plant as a function stacking plant. If you have a pole & guy wire then plant there. Plant between a row of blueberry plants. You can also plant on the east & west side of trees. Plant in places you would need to weedeat. You can use this plant as a maintenance reduction plant. I'm using Comfrey to reduce my yard care time. Riding on a mower is SO much easier than going back to weedeat.
modified herbs are worthless for good heling properties of a plant need to be completely whole to be of good benefit. you would have more nutrient from steering wood shavings.
I have a species of Comfrey that seeds. It was given to me, and I never say no to anything that is free. Anyway, it has spread all over my garden. I'm not complaining, and neither are my plants. Even my Lemon tree which, by all reports hate sharing their bed with any other plant, love it...I just wait for it to get to the flowering stage and cut and drop it where it falls around the base of the tree. I do the same with the apple trees and the plums, orange and peach trees and they are all thriving.... it forms a mulch and, as it breaks down, it feeds all of those mineral's that it has "mined" to the plant...I also believe that the chickens will love you if you give them comfrey. I would plant it around the outside of their run so that it will grow through the wire, and they can pick at it when they feel the need to...Just a couple of thoughts that someone may be able to use... www.bing.com/videos/search?q=comfrey+plant+for+chickens&docid=603522477976785648&mid=805FEF2ABB624620BCE8805FEF2ABB624620BCE8&view=detail&FORM=VIRE
Hi Les, the one I have is sterile so won’t spread by seed. I’m glad you keep on top if yours! I bet that is a lot of rich mulch. Yes the chickens do like it and will eat what they need. I hand cut for them and they have access when free-ranging too. It’s a wonderful plant. Thanks for watching and your comments.

They do great at the base of trees where most things don’t grow, if you have limited room.

There's some comfrey growing wild at one of the places i go to for work, I'm going to get some of it next time i go there.... thank you!
Just be careful it isn’t one that becomes invasive!

Wouldn't feeding the comfrey to the chickens make good, fast compost and also offset the costs of feeding the chickens?
