Thalapathi was not super hit that time. Rajini fans complained about movie like, they can't understand and movie is completely dark. Thalapathy and Guna are average grossers only. Despite of Thalapathy being mass it didnt do well. Same applies to Mannan as well, its Telugu and Kannada versions (Chiranjeevi and Rajkumar acted) are bigger hits.

Saw this movie in 1991 in Devi Paradise during my final year college, i think the movie was released during Deepavali. Even now this movie has the same impact as then and gives goosebumps. Awesome movie and class performance for the ages by Kamal Sir; no actor but Kamal Sir can pull off such a feat. Privileged to have watched so many of his Classics in theatres before the internet and mobile era.
