Great video. I've fished a little north of you with my kayak in the area called the Basin a few years ago, and had a great time just drifting down the rock edge at Cape Fear river. Picked up several blues, and some speckled trout. Worst part for me was paddling back across to the boat ramp at Fort Fisher. I also went to the Municiple ramp on 55th street and went straight across into the estuary. There are definatly some beautiful areas to fish in your neck of the woods. I'm planning another trip out soon. Maybe we will run into each other. Thanks for the area information.
Thanks for making such a great video. Just arrived to the area with my new to me kayak. Really didn't know where to start. This was just video I was looking for!
My wife and I bring our kids to oak island for a day trip 2-3 times a year to play on the beach. I’m glad I searched “oak island fishing” this morning because you put out some great info here. I guess this means I need to add coastal water to my license (I only have inland). My 4 year old is still a little young to paddle near the ICW, but he would love the creeks and canals.
I'll be over that way the week of the 17th. Do you ever cast net for shrimp? What areas down there would be best to try? We'll have two kayaks with us, it'd be nice to fish with yah! Cheers!
Glad you found Honey’s (Garland Seafood) in Varnamtown- it is a wonderful place. My family has been getting shrimp from them for several generations. They will have some fish, too. And we even bought some of their squid bait and used it to cook up some calamari. Great tour of the island. I’ve caught several nice flounders on a suspending YoZuri stick bait- one was 22”. It’s still there, growing bigger. Your shrimp and grits looked good. We usually boil the shrimp and have grits on the side but I like the looks of your concoction. Tight lines.
Those shrimp and grits were so good. We’ve been out to eat a few times since and I’ve seen them on the menu but I told Kim, I won’t order because I know they’ll never be as good as hers :)
What if you don't do kayaks or smaller boats and only like fishing from shore or surf , do you know of any places that this person could fish from shore like the canals?
Hey I do a lot of land based shark fishing down in Ocean Isle and I love watching your channel. I’ll be back down in October and would like to get a chance to fish with you and maybe put you on a shark. Let me know if you are interested.
Sure, I’ve been trying for two days now and nothing. The surf has been so torn up with all the storms. I think maybe the sharks have been staying further out?
Having said that, those shrimp and grits were fantastic! There are a few rental places on the island. Not sure the prices. I wonder if the rec center lones them out? Might be worth looking into.
Thanks Capt. for reposting this video. BTW, I like spot and croakers because I make Ceviche. Sincerely, Marcelino Albuerne, MD aka Doctor Flavor

I was at the surf fishing seminar with my wife. It was awesome! I took a ton of notes.

Cool, I really like those waters behind Sheep Island. I need to get out there again when I can. Hopefully before flounder season ends :)

I believe my rental this year has kayaks! Whoo hoo!
Looks awesome. Will be there all next week!
Great video. I’d love to bring my kayak down when I come.
Dang lizard fish do a number on the tails of Gulp swimming mullet.

There is a dock at the end of Barbee Blvd, Moore Park. Cast net at low tide will get you some shrimp.
Awesome man!
Thanks!

@@SandsintheSurf same way I feel about steak. Can't pay 4x what I can make better!
Add more water or milk to your grits and keep stirring and cooking. They will get creamy and delicious
Can you make a video on how to catch king mackerel on the pier?
I’ve never done it myself but understand it in theory. I’ll have to try it this fall.
Thanks
Whereabouts at NW15th did you manage to exit? Tried google maps but can't see a spot.
We was coming your way end of august. But every pet friendly house is either booked or wayyyy to expensive. So we’re moving beaches this year 😔
The island seems much busier this year than in the past
Your need to get you a Bianchi E-bike. You can go up to 30 miles on a single charger or pedal if you prefer.
I do have a Colorado XT but only like to take it out on rising tides
Wanting to hit up oak island soon. How is the parking out there? I see many small lots all along the beach.
There is public parking at just about every street, ocean side. However, it does fill up quickly during the main part of the day.
Fished at sunset pier today. Know any good spots around here? Thanks
Sorry, no. I’m not that familiar with Sunset beach. Unless you mean sunset harbor?
Are there ghost shrimp
On the beaches in summer?
Yes but you need to look at low tide

@@SandsintheSurf yeah I was there 2 weeks ago and it was rough on me getting bait out but hopefully in October it’s not too bad
"Not a Shrimp and Grits Fan"... you're going to lose your Southern Status.😉 Is there a inexpensive place to rent a Kayak?

@@SandsintheSurf they used to, not sure about now.
@@SandsintheSurf They did look good, I wrote the recipe down and I'm going to make them. Thanks
Bike helmet.... just sayin' Oh, and thanks for throwing back the black drum for me!
