Medusa IS actually a scary and extremely ugly character in Greek mythology. She has tusks and all like on the art you shown on screen. She has been transformed into a super hot lady only later in art, probably during the renaissance or something idk. That's it for me! I'm gonna watch the rest of the video now
Its not a coincidence that Medusa got transformed into an attractive woman. You see, when Medusa was young she was a human. And she was the prettiest girl alive. Now, according to the myth, one day Poseidon saw Medusa and was so stunned by her beauty....that he raped her in the sacred temple of Athena :p Athena being mad at the disrespectful act to have s3x at her sacred temple, had to punish them. She cannot punish a god though, so she decided only to blame Medusa and transform her into a monster. She turned Medusa's beautiful hair into snakes and her stunning gaze now turns people into stone.
@@megasaIexandros there are always several versions of every myth. This one is from a poem written by Ovid that he seem to have made up for the purpose of his book ("Metamorphoses") since there is no precedent of it in any known myth before that. It to this day the most popular version of Medusa. (Absolutely not saying that you are wrong btw, I'm just adding to the culture time we have going on) This also explains why Athena (aka the coolest goddess ever that everyone likes) acts like a jerk out of nowhere. In others versions, Medusa doesn't really have any origin story, but she and her sisters is an old godess from before the existence of the olympian gods. (I think in "the Theogony" they are the daughter of Gaea and Tartarus) In the poem of Ovid she still looks like a terrifying monster though so I made a quick search and the femme fatale look she has nowadays indeed originates from the Renaissance art when she became more human and feminine looking (everyone was pretty on Renaissance art haha)
Interesting timing! I just beat the original Kid Icarus on my NES Classic day before yesterday, after I found an undefeatable strat where neither Medusa or Tanatos' attacks literally could not hit me, haha. The NES Kid Icarus wasn't my favorite game, but I was determined to finish it because I'm such a big fan of Uprising on the 3DS. Great video as always, Goodgis! Keep it up!
Your cartoony styling is quite nice, the only thing I would change, would be the palette. (So the ugly white outlines could be removed) Using white outlines like on the GBA is a crutch, and should be avoided. Increasing the contrast between the objects in a scene, is a better practice.
I like the original style of Kid Icarus more for the gameplay, but your style would look really cool for something like an icon on a level select screen. Great work!
Your style gives me a Nitrome vibe. Very fun! Probably out of the scope of this re-imagining, but fighting amidst thunderous dark clouds rather than a peaceful night could have been a fun touch for a final boss battle. Making the Three Sacred Treasures be gold like in Uprising could have been a cool touch too (if you played it that is), but I think you nailed the cute NES-era Pit! With Kid Icarus I think the bright and lively style fits the cartoony theme of the original game well. You fight nose monsters and eggplant wizards, for goodness sake! Nicely done. For Monkey with Guns, I wasn't sold on the style until the very end. The tweaks to color at the end really helped pull it all together! I think you managed to make everything pop and feel fun while still meshing well. (For me, I'd love a version of the game with your style!)
These would make for good pictures on the wall, but I was kind of hoping you'd give yourself the same pallette/size limitations as the NES and take the gameplay into account (Pit would be super cramped dodging snakes in that room). I feel like pixel-art as an artform was very underdeveloped in the 80s and a lot of the art was just thrown together by programmers, so it would be interesting to see what it would look like if time travelling pixel artists from today made the game art for some of the classics.
Fun tip, not sure if this works in the program you're using, but in illustrator you can open the same file across two windows, and they'll auto update - one window can remain static so you don't get the erratic zooming in and out during a time-lapse
Love your version of both games! Huge amount of respect for being able to limit yourself with the canvas, I always struggle pulling details forward at lower resolutions! - Foster

Medusa was actually a really pretty character in Greek mythology until she the goddess she worshipped kind of betrayed her (she wasn't there to save her) and that goddess turned her into the beast. A lot of people believe that she is one of the most misunderstood characters in Greek mythology. sorry, I just find greek mythology really fascinating~

I am thinking zombies are over done , wherewolves , vampires and all other monsters are over done aliens are over done but the character that I want to see redone is Metal Gear Solid's Solid Snake .
It's really strange that Medusa ended up so terrible looking - they tiled her to make her wall sized, but in looking up the sprite sheets, those were apparently not reused sprites - as in, they could have made her look like anything, and went with... that... I'm curious why you deleted rather than improved the snakes?
