Bought a 250 scrambler brand new in 1964, just under $1,000 bucks out the door. Learned to ride on the way home and by the time I got there was rev-matching on the shift like a pro. lol fun days

Legend is right! What a skilled and couragous success at an event never before even thought of, let alone completed.
Any idea where to get COLOR pictures of those Baja 1000 bikes?
    THANK YOU for posting!!!!

Dam that guy was lucky to be alive . My great Uncle was cut in two riding his Indian motorcycle . He went threw a bob wire fence one night . I think every state in the US have more than one dead mans curve . This one was known in Southern IL on old route 13 between Harrisburg IL and Marion IL . It was the first curve . That curve is a full 90 degrees . There used to be a filling station on the left back then I think they built a newer station / store on the right going west . I remember the filling station /store back in the mid 60's . I remember seeing the bob wire fence also that ran behind the station following road and the repair to the bob wires he went threw . Now My great uncle went threw that back before WW2 and some time just after WW1 . Some were in the early 20's .

I remember riding on one of these when they first came out in 62 they said...I guess a 250cc then....They sounded cool if you took the Muffler off like the bike in the beginning .....In 63 when I was 10 my dad had a New 63 Chev truck and his Buddy had a new Honda...300/305 Dream and we went from Concord Calif to San Felipe Mexico....I rode on back of that Bike off and on going down there....That Bike seemed so big back then but I was only 10.

I had a 63 scrambler and basically walked out my front door on a weekend morning and was on it all day, riding the hills and oil roads near Taft, CA. One day decided to pull the baffles out of the tailpipes and ka-baam, it was a whole other trip. The OHC kicked in around 8,500 rpm almost spit me off the back of the bike. Reliable is putting it mildly, never had a problem in the 3 years owning the motorcycle..
