It's so sad to see this happening more and more. I understand things change and evolve and we can't stop it but the focus being so much on the monetary aspect just makes it so that I personally don't trust that they care about the quality. It sucks people lose their jobs but just thinking about the end result, I think it could work that the AI first translates it and then a professonal goes through it again to fix things but to also make sure that nuance is not lost in translation and that the translation fits the overall vibe of the story. But I just can't see them care enough to give a professonal the time and the money to do this and instead they'll just get some underpaid person to go through it guickly to make sure there's no huge mistakes.
I am of the opinion that AI should be banned across the board. From all forms of entertainment and art. I was watching few days ago podcast that have big western autor book writer. They asked him if he was threatened by AI work. His response, I believe, was that any good author is going to be fine. That is the reason AI is so rampant and is going to get worse. People with hubris don't let them see that they are not different from all those people who used to produce stuff with skill and hands.
6:39 Having read Ancient Magus Bride, I think the person who proof-read it either didn't know Japanese or just didn't know anything about the story lol. That's the difference, they can pay someone minimum wage to just fix the very obvious grammar errors and call it a day. I love Magus Bride so I was willing to try it out but reading the AI translation felt like a fever dream almost. The sentences all made sense on their own but put together I wasn't sure if i was really reading English or not lol. I hope to god Sevens Seas uses an actual translator for the physical releases
To comment on what you said about “why would you have the translator check if the ai translator did its job well.” It’s probably future proofing so that they don’t have rely on hiring and paying translators. Thus they save money over time. At the end of the day the true problem with these companies is *greed.*
It's not just that, we got bad translators and localizers in the mixed that can't help themselves to change the authors works because of their politics or worldview. Thus the need of AI translation as authors would go for that option due to the internal politics of westerners that will try to take over their work and bastardize their story.
AI is a dream crusher. I want to either Voice Act for anime or translate Manga, because that’s what I’m passionate about, but AI threatens both of those. I know this not a popular take, but I don't care if AI or a human does translations. All I want in a translation is quality and consistency. If AI can translate well, and keep it consistent for a series, then I'm all for it. That means we can get more translations and quicker. But with the state of AI currently, I'm not so sure that is possible at this time. I also understand that there is an inherent human element to translations that can really set the stage for how characters come across to the reader. I've read some of the same manga chapters, but from two different translators, and both had a unique style. Since it was in the middle of a series, the translation that I had been reading was fine, and the other felt quite off and the characters seemed completely different.
Let's be real, if I were a translator, why wouldn't I just pop it into ai, then just proofread it to make sure its good? Makes the job quicker and easier. It's like the thing when teachers say you have to do math by hand because "you won't always have a calculator" but that just isn't true anymore.
Maybe if so many the translators just translated and didn't put their own spin on the translation and story their augment would be more valid for at least the next few years but they have brought this on themselves in may respects in the West

Problem is the localizers are the ones that worsening the issue, they have injected their own politics and changing the author meaning of their books or works. Thus the call for AI translation, this is a prevailing issue that not only in manga but games from JP as well got their translations being messed with and change to suit the Western audience. Which itself is already muddy and trying to own the works of the developers or authors, another western influence that is more outrageous is the assassin creed issue, a western professor is found to have created fictional changes in the lore of yasuke in Japan historical works and have earn money out of that scam. Asian people are now slowly realising westerners are trying to own the culture and works that isn't theirs.

Thats something most localizers are never going to accomplish unless they actually translate. And yes I understand things don’t flow into English well, I understand certain references may be switched. But the excuses are running out and people are tired of it. You can’t use the excuse “well certain things don’t translate into English a direct translation would be bad” I think personally, that’s incredibly disingenuous when nearly all live action foreign films, philosophical texts, Novels, or even films from critically acclaimed directors think Miyazaki or satoshi kon, Have NEVER had this big of a problem at least as huge as anime and or video games. There is a difference between localizing something, and straight up taking liberties and adapting it. There is 100% a double standard and addressing why that is, is one way of solving an already increasingly complex moral and ethical issue

They’re pretty accurate actually. Much better than what is being offered by politically motivated “translators”. Translators did this to themselves. Turning traps & femboy into trans allegories & such.

I’ve been playing with some AI programs the last 2 weeks and it’s scary what it can generate.
