I did the whole length of the M6 and the M1 on a motorcycle and my arse told me it was the M6.

Tbh that is a really difficult question as it's not really based on general knowledge, but rather just a guesstimate. Can't really see how anyone would know that apart from truck drivers

It IS general knowledge. Its shown up on many quizzes I've done under the general knowledge category. There is only 1 longest road in Britain. I'm at a loss, of all people Clarkson didn't know that answer. I'd of expected this before the £1000 mark.
Why did she tell Nick their guess before he answered?
I know that was very very bad as it influenced his decision. There was no point in asking him.
I cannot believe neither of these 2 knew this, but then I have stuck on the M6 numerous times in my articulated lorry.
I would've said M5... which is the shortest out of these 4, so that shows what I know 🤷♂
Even this is not as bad as 'ibexgate' where Jeremy began his answer 'I actually know this' and proceeded to wrongly convince the contestant an ibex was a type of deer, losing them the game..
it's like asking the audience but you're only asking one guy- of course it's gonna be less reliable but at least you can have a discussion about options
why do people act like he got it wrong on purpose?

The giveaway for me as to it being the M6 is you see those tiny blue signs along the motorway showing the length and M6 is over 200 miles. How Jeremy didn't know that know is a mystery lol.

I feel like the error Jeremy made regarding the M1 being extended is because of the A1M that goes off from it at Leeds and that continues all the way up to Gateshead.
M6 meanwhile is from near Rugby to just south of the Scottish Border

The M1 long 193 miles; the M4 long 189 miles and M5 long 163 miles*

Very few people drive on motorways regularly and even if they do it is going to be specific to the area they live.
The lengths of all 4 motorways are:
M1 (Staples Corner, London to Hook Moor, West Yorkshire) = 193.5 miles
M4 (Chiswick to Pont Abraham) = 189 miles
M5 (West Bromwich to Exminster) = 162.9 miles
M6 (Catthorpe to Gretna) = 232.2 miles
Jeremy even got the M6's length correct while he was muttering to himself.
Did Clarkson get it wrong because he was eyeing the boots lol

When Clarkson made that remark, "What I'm doing is, I'm working out the length of all the motorways having driven on them extensively, to help your environmental charity" and then the sour expression he makes and the slight shake of the head, and taking into consideration how he's expressed his disdain for environmentalists on TG numerous times, it made me think he's probably going to give her the wrong answer.
If true, he consciously took money from her charity. Bad form.

Jeremy almost never gets the right answer to an 'Ask the Host' question. The show has revealed how little he knows about anything.

junction 1 of the m6 is Rugby, not Lutterworth, so he was wrong twice lol...
M1 goes from Staples Corner in London to just north of Garforth in Leeds where it merges onto the A1(M). Not to the midlands.

I keep forgetting they use miles in the UK. As an American this is so strange to me, 'cuz I thought only WE used miles. She shouldn't have told the phone a friend what she thought it was. He might have guessed something else. I kind of had a feeling it was the M6, 'cuz they didn't discuss that one too much. Honestly, I don't think Jeremey has any reason to beat himself up. I think his method of working it out was great, and you could tell he really wanted to get it. it's still impressive that he knew what he knew. Who the hell just knows this? Even looking at map, won't get you an accurate distance. Especially since highways are extended frequently or merge into other highways. Whatever! I'm not mad she lost. She's irritating as hell!
You think it is weird that the English use an English unit of measurement?
We use a mixture in the UK so distance we usually use miles for, but for smaller meaurements we usually use CM/M unless you're over a certain age then they may be more likeley to use inches and feet still. For liquids we almost mostly use litres, and for weight we mostly use grams and kilos except for weighing ourselves, which we mostly use pounds and stone still.
She could have just asked, “What is the longest motorway in Britain?”
Am I the only one that is really surprised that Jeremy didn't get this. I thought it was pretty obvious that it was the M6
I honestly thought the A1 would come up as an answer.
But yes, I would've gone for M6 because I've been on it (From the valleys of South Wales to Edinburgh - 8 hours via car) countless times and it's an absolute fucker of a motorway.
I remember about 3/4 years ago, I was going to Edinburgh with my parents to spend time with relatives and the M6 was shut off due to maintenance or whatever, which meant every car for that route had to go take the country lanes and it was a bloody nightmare, it was a lot worse when tractors got in the way.
Interesting that you managed to pick up the M6 in south Wales!

In the old days when the show was recorded, sometimes, days b4 it went out , how come EVERY time the phone a friend answered the phone out of 1,000 Phone A Friends. All 1,000 answered. They were never out. Would not have known when the phone would ring as it was not always LIVE and could have been one of 20 calls that day and there might be a Family of 6 any of whom could have answered the phone because WHEN they answered they would always express SURPRISE.....????????

They would be informed that they would need to be available during a certain period of time. The reason they were surprised is be because they don’t expect them to get to the hot seat.

Also it;s a biig ask as there are 10 contestants on every show, potentially and all with 3 friends so that is 30 people on one show who have to monopolize their home phone :)
It was never LIVE, always prerecorded. I suspect BT (or who ever WWTBAM phone provider was) supplied a dedicated phone only for that purpose. They would have been notified of the recording schedule and advised to be on call during that time. If they were unable/unwilling to be on standby at that time the contestant would need to provide a replacement.
I can't envisage that at all Colin. 3 Phone A Friends per contestant and 10 players every episode so 30 Phone lines installed and sometimes there would be 10 Programmes or more a week.

It doesn't, there is a break in the circle at the Dartford crossing (becomes the A282) so that non-motorway traffic can cross the river.

It does, but did not always. It was extended around the year 2000 to join the A1 at Hook Moor, carrying on towards Newcastle as the A1(M).
Hook moor and aberford are still in Leeds so again the M1 does not go past Leeds

No it isn't, cos it's not a full circle. The Thames crossing is not the M25 it's the A282
