[MOA] SU-METAL will slash you. Really.
    [YUI] Yeah. [SU] (laughs)
(Megitsune video commentary from the BABYMETAL members)
Su was 15. Yui and Moa were 13, almost 14 when this video was released.
Even though they were wearing white robes, this was not the Kami Band they have for live performances.
The performers pretending to play the traditional Japanese instruments in this video are dancers with the Movement Design group.
Chidori Yakumo is their director. She is the woman performing the fan dance during the breakdown.
Thanks for reacting to this one. Megitsune is my jam.
It's still my favorite BABYMETAL song, video and choreography.
Definitely quintessential BABYMETAL and their most Japanese song. You could even call this Kawaii Festival Metal.
BABYMETAL's producer Koba sent this song back to the song arranger Yuyoyuppe dozens of times before he was satisfied with it.
This one consistently tops fan polls, and has been performed live more than any other BABYMETAL song.

Hell ya man! Megitsune is another classic. Also, unlike some of their other “fun” songs, the message is quite deep. It calls out to the traditional Japanese double standard of expecting women to hide their true emotions in public, yet being called the derogatory term “megitsune” (female fox / vixen) for being deceitful. Su says the definition of an ideal woman has changed with passing of time, and quotes a gangster film, “Maidens, are not to be under estimated”, in microphone tanto part. It’s like quoting scarface “say hello to my little friends”, but a female version.

@@JPaulyReacts there are actually a few vids of different songs with Kami Band solos (just search "kami band" in the YT search) ; but the Rondo of Nightmare one is deffo a favorite.

This may be 10 years old but it still goes as hard today as it did when they were kids. The crowd surge in Toronto when they played this a couple of months back was something else.

So in your last reaction, Akatsuki, you mentioned you wondered where the other girls were during Su's solo. Somebody mentioned that they were probably back stage watching Su as they enjoy her vocals as much as we all do. I would agree with that. Even before Babymetal, Su was already a JPop idol from a group called Karen girls. Yuimetal (the one with the baby cheeks) was going through a VERY difficult family problem where one of her family members was fighting for their life in the hospital with an unknown illness and Yui was not permitted to see her family member in the hospital due to how things work in Japan aparently. The doctors were very concerned for her and one of them suggested she go find something to occupy her mind and take things off of the stress. So Yui started watching Karen girls and learned all the dance moves. She idolized Su from that period and it was always her dream to perform one of their songs with Su. She actually eventually got that wish to come true which was awesome to see! Moametal, the girl with the dimples when she smiles, also idolizes Su-Metal, but I'm not sure of the story behind that. Maybe somebody knows and will share lol but we all KNOW Moa loves Su very much. There is a TON of evidence for that! She also loves Su's hair, but that's a different story for another day lol Moa is quite the character lol
You also mentioned that Su has quite the vocal range, you are right. You haven't heard anything yet. The high notes you've heard so far are no where near HER high notes. Those are more midrange, I'd almost say chest-voice even. As somebody mentioned, check out Babymetal's song From Dusk Till Dawn the 2021 version. You'll get to really see her hit high notes there. For a VERY long time I thought the notes she actually hits weren't human vocals, but some electronic thing going on. Then I saw it was her when I watched the live performance and I was dumbfounded. Not many people can hit those notes. She's almost touching whistlenotes notes without doing whistlenote techniques. Makes me wonder if she can ACTUALLY HIT whistlenotes! Would love to see that!

Im curious if anyone knows when they decided to make the musicianship more a part of the vibe?
As far as this video, the lyrics talk of women playing the part of weak and fragile, but that is the rouse of thier defense against those who pray on the weak. However, the video tells a little different angle. While little Moa, and Yui play, run and jump, Su has left childhood behind, and looks at the world more catiously, while young ones can play carelessly. A sort of "coming of age song." Not to be confused with headbanger, which is a different coming of age song.

The instrument played at the beginning of this piece is the koto (Japanese harp), and the instrument held by the actor pretending to play in the background is the shamisen (Japanese banjo). In the latest song, METALI!, the shamisen is played throughout the song.

Great reaction again. This is from 2013, 10 nearly 11 years ago - Su-metal was 15, Yuimetal and Moametal were both nearly 14 when the video was recorded.
'Megitsune' often tops fan polls for their favourite song - it is also arguably the song that showcases better than most what BABYMETAL are about and one that truly reflects their Japanese culture the best starting with the traditional instruments (shamisen or koto, you decide which) in the intro and the lyrics about women being compared to foxes (kitsune - which also explains all the fox masks in the video) which, in Japanese mythology, are able to shape shift and take human form in order to deceive.
As I understand it, it is a bit of a push back against the traditional female role in Japanese society - or maybe it is - whilst also praising and celebrating the women who have played that role over the years for their strength.
They are saying that women wearing their make up and hiding their true feelings ("crying at heart, smiling at face") are not trying to deceive anybody, they are simply trying to please everybody - so they are not deceptive kitsune (foxes), they are maiden-like megitsune (female foxes or vixens) or actresses - and they are strong.
The melody used in the breakdown with the pig squeals in the middle of the song is from the very well known Japanese folk song called 'Sakura Sakura' (Cherry Blossoms).
When Su pulled out the tanto (short blade) from her microphone she said "Otome wa ... nametara ikan zeyo." (Maidens ... shouldn't be underestimated). The last part of this is a famous quote from a Japanese gangster movie said by the daughter of a gang boss.
Much of the official video was shot on location at the Asagaya Shinmei Shrine in Tokyo. This has become a place of pilgrimage for BABYMETAL fans visiting Tokyo. The guys at the back waving the traditional instruments about were dancers with the lady who did the fan dance's troupe.
They have played 'Megitsune' live more than any other song (over 300 times now I think) so there are so many great live versions ... I think my favourite (or high up) would be the Red Fox Festival concert in 2017 where they opened the show with it ... and they had an exclusively all female audience - perfect for the crowd interaction in this song with its meaning.🦊

    Great reaction, thanks!
"Megitsune" is, in my opinion, THE quintessential BABYMETAL song, one of their most loved ones and the one played live the most: 334 times, almost in every concert since it premiered live in June 2013.
Interesting you mentioned the lower notes that Su-metal hits. She struggled a little with them back in the day because the song really challenges her vocal range. But she always sings it during rehearsals to check her voice. I was lucky enough to hear the soundchecks and 1: her voice somehow cuts through walls; and 2: she sounds amazing.
The music video has two main locations:
    - The stage where they are performing is called Nohgakudo at Asagaya Shinmei-gu Shrine in Tokyo. This is an actual stage within the shrine complex which is used to play music and perform dances during festivals (matsuri).
    - The orange-ish torii gates are part of the famous Fushimi Inari-taisha shrine in Kyoto.
Both locations are mandatory "pilgrimage" destinations for BABYMETAL fans. And I'm going to visit them very soon. 😁
    Until next time!

    _Sore!_ 🦊🤘🔥
Cool to see you're back with this great suggestion for first time watching.
Fans were enjoying and having so much fun watching this in every setlist of the recently finished World Tour.
This was released in 2013 when having around 13/14 and 15 yo, so is one of their early hits and is full of japanese elements, like the "shamizen", a japanese traditional instrument, and is a party festival song (matsuri).
"Sore" "seiya" and "soya" are typical shouts among Japanese festival and it works like a "c'mon!" or "let's go" for them.
During the breakdown you can hear another typical japanese folk song called "Sakura Sakura" and they're doing a traditional Japanese dance.
In summary, song is about female empowerment and if you follow the lyrics you'll see about it, "Megitsune" means female fox (vixen) and they talk about women acting with a smile in their face while crying inside, just to fit in society or what is expected from them, when they're kind to you they're not trying to make falling in love with them, they're just being their own way, and men tend to confuse and think they're cheating or deceiving like the mythological fox.
"Megitsune" used to be a peyorative term in Japanese culture, pretty much just like around the world, but BM is using this as a way to empower women despite the meaning itself.
When SuMetal is pulling out the "tanto" she's saying "maidens shouldn't be underestimated", that refers to a japanese mob film about some boss mafia daughter before attacking someone. During live performance she does something different and looks really cool doing it.
Megitsune is a quintessential BM song and among top ranking songs by fans, SuMetal said she didn't mastered yet, that's why she used to sound check with this song before live concerts.
This is a song with the arrangements by YuppeMetal, he took inspiration from "Memphis May Fire - The Sinner" for the drum section, another song that i recommend you for your own time if you want.
You can also enjoy the live version at Budokan 2014 with the original trio or live at Budokan 2021 with the mature trio and see the difference in SuMetal vocals, which btw she doesn't make those pig squeals or any screamo/growling, she can scream on certain parts thou but you'll notice. You will also enjoy the sound of the Kami Band, they're a set of professional musicians selected to backup the girls with the metal sound, during early era there were mainly a Japanese crew, and after 2019 they introduced a whole new crew from the West, we called them West Kami Band, they played during this recent World Tour.
    Next suggestion:
    - Road Of Resistance live in Japan official live, in case you get some block issues try using some filters.
    See you next time. 🦊🤘🔥

      Forgot to tell you:
The origin of the "fox sign" is really long to explained but here's a short summary:
The Fox God (Kitsune Sama) is the Metal God who sent these girls (and Kami Band after to help them with the metal sound) to unify the world and set them free from Jpop slavery. The kitsune sign came out by accident around the time they created the group by the girls when trying to imitate the typical metal horn sign they noticed it was similar when doing fox shadow shape, they implemented this as part of the lore, imagery, theme and live concerts, the lore is huge so take your time and keep digging and riding the Foxhole 🦊🤘
Btw they praised for real and made a ritual to the Fox God for this song to be a hit and successful, and thanks to the Fox God this is one of their major hits and favorite BM fan songs. -NotACult- 👀
