I've been crocheting for a very long time, but I've never heard of color pooling. Your afghan is stunning. Just found your channel, and I think I'll be sticking around. Great videos.
I’ve been waiting for this one!! I was trying to color pool last night with the red heart neon stripes. There are soooo many colors and two of them are twice as long as the rest. I’d have to make a chain of 500 to be able to make a chain with every color in it I’m stumped. Not unusual. But I’m gonna have to keep trying until I can do this magic. Thank you for these videos. It makes sense, if my colors were the same length I think I could do it 🫤
Also, the colors that are twice as long may be a factory mistake. They should all be the same length. Try pulling out your yarn a good bit to see if the long sections continue or if it was just a mistake in that one section. You may be able to cut them off and start at the beginning of the next sequence of colors.
@@ItsTimeforYarn after looking closer I realize the color way is not the neon stripes. It is neon but it’s isn’t neon stripes color way. So i think I’ll cut those two colors like you say and it should work. The rest are working out the exact same number of stitches. Yay I’m excited to try it. Things that cause me to be excited are very different these days😂
thank you so so much, i absolutely LOVE this 🥰 a little tip from me to you (i already learned so much from these videos) you can do the magic knot so that it exactly goes on the color change (i hope this explains well 😂) tie a knot with the left over yellow on the new yellow and a knot with the left over black (from the new one) on the black That's already on the project and pull till the knots come together ON the color change. and as a plus the knot will b covered in your Next row because the color change topically is covered in the rest. I really thank you for this, i was looking for something new and challenging to try out 😁😊
Letting folks know that you'll get about 7 and a half rows per skein of neon or primary stripes. I just finished my first ball of neon stripes, so I decided to share my maths. EDIT: I bad math'd below, and didn't pay attention to how the colour only moves one cluster over every second row, since the return pass is playing out a different pattern. Better math: (number of clusters per colour) x 10 (number of colour segments) x 2 = number of rows to end in the opposite corner on the same colour. So for me: 8 clusters x 10 segments x 2 = 160 rows. 160/7.5 = 21.3 balls BAD MATH of the past: I've got 8 clusters per colour, which means 80 clusters per row, so if I want a square blanket with the corners ending on the same colour, and that colour as my center solid diamond, I'm going to need an optimistic 11 skeins (likely 12 to account for colour matching when changing.) Thanks for a fabulous tutorial. I became obsessed with this project as soon as I saw your neon blanket in the background and needed one of my own.
Excellent math! I used 12 skeins for my blanket so you are right on with your calculations. I became obsessed too as soon as I learned about color pooling. It is so fascinating! 😁💜
@@deb9607 I ended up using 21 balls to get to a full square, (i need to go edit my math mistake up in my original comment) and it's about 2m X 2m, and weighs about 3kg.
😊😂😂❤ I learned so much hun. I love all the tips, you gave to get started on one. 😊 I remember years ago, I was making scarfs for our neighbors girls. And I had noises when I was done. I've had made an beautiful pattern. Now I've heard about yarn poling a couple times before. And that you had to make sure you started at the right part of the beginning of yarn for it to make the pattern. 😂. I thought wow !! that's pretty cool.
Your video just popped up for me🤗I’ve tried color pooling but could never figure it out😢 because you took time to make a 3 part video I’m wanting to give it another shot🤗 Thank You for taking so much of your time to make this process more understandable😮but for my next effort I will use the exact type of yarn you used 😅 just to figure out my tension 😊 Thank You Again❤
So I have been trying for the past 3 days to get started with the primary color stripes😮 I’ve gotten to row 3 and 4 and wasn’t happy with the out come😢 I realized this is me being too hard on myself for not just going on with the project🤦🏽♀️ Question though 🤔 is it possible to do the moss stitch with this yarn🤷🏽♀️😁
@@lilmistriv5563 it is definitely difficult to see the pattern at first. Trust the process and make sure your diagonals are lining up and soon enough, you will be amazed at the design. I’m sure it is possible to do the moss stitch with this yarn, however, the number of stitches would be quite long for each color. It would certainly give a different look and I would think that the squares would be bigger. Keep up the good work!
So how many skeins did you end up using in the primary color way🤔 I finally got mine going and just getting to the end of my second skein. I have 4 more skeins left but thinking I might need to get 2-4 more skeins
That was not what I was searching for but the subject seemed really interesting (did not know you could use multi-coloured yarn this way) and you are such a great teacher that here I am, watching the three videos! I have to subscribe now, cause I am certain to learn more from you! 😌

You can color pool with knitting as well! I have no idea how to do it but I’ve seen color pooling with knitting in some of the color pooling Facebook groups I’m in. I encourage you to do a little research for knitting. I’m sure you will find it and be able to figure it out! 😁💜

GOD bless you forever, my dear friend🙏 Very beautifully, your crochet is so nice I've learned so much from you, and I appreciate my dear friend Have a great day 🙏 Thank you so much, my dear friend
I crochet along with you. And I find it easier, at the end of the row, to make a cluster of 2 double crochets instead of 3. Because of the 3 chains to turn, I run out of yarn. With that trick, it is better. It is so much fun to do. Thanks!❤
I love this! Color pooling is all about controlling the yarn to make it do what you want. Using only 2 doubles on the end to make turning around easier is a masterful way to control the yarn. Nice job! 😁💜
Thank you so much for this series. I found a ball of yarn (black with neon colours) a few years ago that I just adored on first sight. However, I was so disappointed with the scarf I made since the colours were all over the place. After watching Part 1 I excitedly undid the scarf and started colour pooling according to your tips and instructions and I AM LOVING the outcome. It's so pretty that I'm considering making it into a purse/bag instead of a scarf (and also the width and length doesn't work for a scarf anymore). I haven't made a crochet bag before, but I've been watching tutorials on how to add a lining (so things don't fall out in between the stitches). So this might become the basis for my first crochet bag! Thanks for helping me discover the true potential for this lovely yarn!!
You’re very welcome! I know exactly how you feel with this yarn. Someone described it as “color chaos” and that totally fits. The beautiful pattern it creates with color pooling is the superior way of showcasing this yarn (in my humble opinion). A bag would be so cool in black and neon. You can do it! Send me a picture through Instagram or email when you’ve finished it. I would I love to see your work! 😁💜
So, just like you, in the middle of my project I had an epiphany. 😂 I’m working with the neon stripes red heart yarn and I could halve the planned pooling like you did with the longer stripes….the project for me is about 80” across, but you could easily make a smaller blankie by turning in the third black “pool” and make it only 40”. Could see it when you folded it against itself and it was a mirror image….😊 Love the videos on planned pooling. There are not enough good ones out there that are explaining the mathematics that goes into it. Lol. Ironically that is what makes me understand it better than ever. Kudos to you!
Thank you! Yes, when I did my neon stripes blanket, I halved it as well. I didn’t think to say that when I made this tutorial but I’ll have to mention it in my future videos. I’m so glad my epiphany on my derby stripes blanket helped you with your epiphany with the neon stripes. I love the math part and do my best to explain what’s happening with the yarn. That way whoever is working can understand what they are doing. I love it. Keep up the good work! 😁💜
@@ItsTimeforYarn And yes, can totally appreciate going to bed with the “riddle” of figuring out how to make a yarn that you know should pool work and waking up in the morning with a few ideas why it wasn’t working. Thank you so much!!! I fell in love with this checkered crochet laying in your coach and I just follow your instructions in this video and I am materializing my dream. Chaining with your border color and leaving the end open to add more stitches was a game changer for me. Actually your whole series on color pooling was so helpful. This is my first time doing a blanket like this. What did you do for your border?? ❤️
Thank you! I’m so glad you found my series helpful. 😁💜 I didn’t want to draw attention away from the pattern so I did a simple single crochet for a few rounds.
Also as soon as you mentioned playing cards with your grandpa when you were 5 it clicked. I played cards with my Joe too, rummy 500, pinochle, etc. it’s the math mind. That’s why this pooling is so intriguing to a math oriented mind trying to figure out the sequencing etc. that being said, I’m still pretty intimidated!
Yes! I play pinochle with my family all the time and go to play poker with my mom. Color pooling definitely clicks well with math oriented minds. You can do it! 😁💜
Excellent tutorial, never knew this process. Just started crochet again. I will be on the look out for this type of colour yarn and maybe make one. The steps were explained so clearly. Inspiring. Thank you 🧶
I know you may never see this comment, but others might. Have you considered measuring how much yarn is required for each type of stitch and each size of hook to make it easier to determine your magic numbers? For example, if you know you can do one granny stitch cluster with a size H Hook and three inches of yarn, you could measure the length of each color and determine about how many stitches you can make with it. I know it would change a bit with yarn weight, but you would be able to get a pretty good idea. You could make a list for reference. Excellent tutorials! I had never even considered this method. Now I definitely want to try it. Thank you!
You should definitely try it! It’s a lot of fun. Collecting data on your stitches could be fun and helpful. I prefer to go with the flow and start with what worked with other similar yarns but you could very well be onto something for those that like to reference themselves. I love your critical thinking! 😁💜
Thank you so much for this great tutorial, it has definitely inspired me to take on new projects using the colorpooling method i also plan on hopefully being able to profit from what i make, but this cool technique will help me move in the right direction with that, fingers crossed 🤞 anyway thank you again for the video i really appreciate it 🥰💙
Started this yesterday. Like as soon as my yarn arrived! Its looking so good. I got somewhere between a third to half the first skien done! Im so glad its working! I tried the moss stich with a few yarns and they just arent turning out. And i was getting frustrated in understood the math but just cant get it to work. Eventually ill return to that project amd see if i can get it to work.
Yay!! I’m so happy for you. It’s so satisfying to watch the pattern develop. Keep up the good work and don’t give up on your moss stitches. Enjoy this success and get those projects out of time out when you’re ready to tackle them again. 😁💜
You have explained the process better than any other and I now understand how to make the pooling happen. My problem is my tension and hook size. I tried different hooks and I was getting 8 clusters using a 6mm with pretty much using my normal tension on the first row. My problem started on the second row. I can only get 7 clusters if I continue with the 6mm. I went down on hook size to a 5.5mm to maintain the correct number of clusters in the first color which I attributed it to the extra double crochet at the end of the first row. But I can not get 8 clusters in the rest of the colors on the second row unless I drop back to a 5mm and tighten up my tension. I haven't even finished the second row and it's killing my hand. What happened for me to go from a normal tension 6mm to a tight tension 5mm to maintain the magic number? Plus, because it's so tight, it's not looking very good either. Ugh!!
I’m not sure what happened but my advice since you are just starting is to restart using 7 (or even 6) as your magic number. The first row will need to be adjusted with looser tension or extra doubles in some clusters but it will make it where you won’t have to stitch so tightly later in the pattern. I know frogging can be heartbreaking but sometimes it is necessary to make the rest of the project go more smoothly. Keep me updated on your progress. You can do it! Ps. Thank your for your kind words. 😁💜
Thanks for these great tutorials. I've always wondered what to do with those striping yarns! What if you wanted to make your starting row longer? Is it OK as long as you land on that starting colour with the proper cluster count to make-up the magic number? How many skeins of this particular yarn makes a decent sized throw?
Excellent method! I would try joining your new balls of yarn with a russian knot. I think that you may find it more precise to colour matching. Have a great day! 🇨🇦
I’m very new to crocheting but love the neon colors in this blanket. I’m going to give it a go. I had a question though. Would I be able to make a border around this and how would that work?
Absolutely! I did a black border around mine just as I would any other blanket. I worked single crochets as evenly as I could and did 3 singles in each corner to go around. Then I just did as many rows as I wanted to get the thickness I liked. 😁💜
I started color pooling with the neon yarn, but after sticking with it for three rows it just wasn't working. I was determined and so pulled up Excel and highlighted cells to denote the clusters, so I could clearly see what it was supposed to be doing. I had to pull out half of it, but finally got it going. Now it's very satisfying to see the pattern develop. I wonder how many skeins of Red Heart yarn have been purchased just because of your videos. You should get a cut of the action!
That’s so smart! Sometimes when a yarn is kicking my butt, I use graph paper and draw it out. Having that visual can make all the difference with getting the pattern right. Great job! I’ve thought about looking into an affiliate link with Yarnspirations. If they have a program, you may have just inspired me to take the leap! 😁💜

thank you so so much, i absolutely LOVE this 🥰 a little tip from me to you (i already learned so much from these videos) you can do the magic knot so that it exactly goes on the color change (i hope this explains well 😂) tie a knot with the left over yellow on the new yellow and a knot with the left over black (from the new one) on the black That's already on the project and pull till the knots come together ON the color change. and as a plus the knot will b covered in your Next row because the color change topically is covered in the rest. I really thank you for this, i was looking for something new and challenging to try out 😁😊
Thank you for the tip! I’m still mastering the magic knot but I’ll give this a try.
I’m so glad you’re here! You will love color pooling! 😁💜
160/7.5 = 21.3 balls
BAD MATH of the past:
I've got 8 clusters per colour, which means 80 clusters per row, so if I want a square blanket with the corners ending on the same colour, and that colour as my center solid diamond, I'm going to need an optimistic 11 skeins (likely 12 to account for colour matching when changing.)
Thanks for a fabulous tutorial. I became obsessed with this project as soon as I saw your neon blanket in the background and needed one of my own.
Excellent math! I used 12 skeins for my blanket so you are right on with your calculations.
I became obsessed too as soon as I learned about color pooling. It is so fascinating! 😁💜
What are the dimensions of your blanket?
@@deb9607 it’s approx 7x4 feet
Thx
@@deb9607 I ended up using 21 balls to get to a full square, (i need to go edit my math mistake up in my original comment) and it's about 2m X 2m, and weighs about 3kg.
This is the one that I fell in love with, and I'm so excited to learn how to make it.
I’m excited for you! It is so much fun to watch the pattern develop. You can do it!
@@ItsTimeforYarn I will definitely give it a go when I get the right yarn!
😊😂😂❤ I learned so much hun. I love all the tips, you gave
to get started on one.
You are one of the best teachers! I learned that I need to try this at least once. Thank you so much!

Interesting technique. Thanks for the yarn selections.

This truly is creative, and intelligently done … with grace! 🥰 Much respect!
Thank you! 😁💜
So now I’m going through all my color change yarns and seeing how I can use this technique! Love it!
It is so much fun! 💜😁
You’re very welcome. Happy to help! It can be tricky at first but once you get the hang of it, color pooling is so much fun. You can do it! 😁💜
Welcome! I’m so glad you’re here. 😁💜
I truly appreciate this series and will refer to it a lot as I begin this journey into color pooling! Now I must find some yarn that will lend itself to this strategy!
Thanks so much for your expertise….😊

After the move, and after fishing season, between making pots, I'll squeeze in a blanket LIKE the one you made.
Thanks loads!!

I did it!!!!!!!!!!! I used a bigger hook but it turned out rather large n beautifull. Almost kept it for myself but grandson deserved something homemade from grandma. 🤔🥰 After all i did crochet fancy doll dresses complete with hoop skirts, pantalones, n hats, n shoes for his little sisters. But geesh i wanted to keep it, lol. Color pooling must popular where im at, cause there's no more cp yarn or not enough to make a blanket at the stores. 🤨 Oh well, mabe new colors will come out. Thank you so much, my dear friend
You’re very welcome. Have a great day! 😁💜
Could see it when you folded it against itself and it was a mirror image….😊
Love the videos on planned pooling.

Chaining with your border color and leaving the end open to add more stitches was a game changer for me. Actually your whole series on color pooling was so helpful. This is my first time doing a blanket like this. What did you do for your border?? ❤️
Thank you! I’m so glad you found my series helpful. 😁💜

Wow - you have made a confusing process very clear. Ty
You’re very welcome! 😁💜

Inspiring. Thank you 🧶
Thank you! Once I discovered it, I never looked at variegated yarn the same way again. 😁💜
@@ItsTimeforYarn Thank you! I'm definitely a list maker, and like to have charts and guides. I can appreciate going with the flow, though.

Ugh!!
PS I'm using Red Heart Super Saver Jumbo Stripes in Neon Stripe
I’m not sure what happened but my advice since you are just starting is to restart using 7 (or even 6) as your magic number. The first row will need to be adjusted with looser tension or extra doubles in some clusters but it will make it where you won’t have to stitch so tightly later in the pattern. I know frogging can be heartbreaking but sometimes it is necessary to make the rest of the project go more smoothly. Keep me updated on your progress. You can do it!
Ps. Thank your for your kind words. 😁💜
I can’t WAIT to try this out
You are going to love it! 😁💜

THANK YOU! This is turning out so gorgeous! What kind of border would look good with this?
Yay! Great job! I used a simple single crochet border in black so that the plaid can really shine.
Thanks for these great tutorials. I've always wondered what to do with those striping yarns! What if you wanted to make your starting row longer? Is it OK as long as you land on that starting colour with the proper cluster count to make-up the magic number? How many skeins of this particular yarn makes a decent sized throw?
Nevermind! I just found the next video in the series!
I'm on my 10th skien of yarn. I'm loving this. However, I'm gonna at least go through 15 skeins or more to finish this to be a nice size. 😊
Yes, I used 12 skeins. It is a great size and I love how it drapes. Keep up the good work! 😁💜

Excellent method! I would try joining your new balls of yarn with a russian knot. I think that you may find it more precise to colour matching. Have a great day! 🇨🇦
Thank you for the suggestion. I’ve been hearing a lot about Russian join lately and need to look it up! 💜😁
