I worked in the Chinese restaurant Dragon Den on the boardwalk in 1958, the summer after my freshman at Pratt school of architecture. I sun bath every day before I went to work, went to the Steel Pier for shows quite often. Those are my innocent years. A lot of memories. Geore Wu, AIA 2012-12-8
I worked at Steel Pier from 1965 to 1969. I can honestly say they were truly "happy days."
It was called "Summertime On The Pier". It was hosted originally by Don Grady & Ed Hurst, The in the late 60's only by Ed Hurst. It aired on Saturdays & Sundays at 2 or 3 Pm On channel 6 WPVI and later on channel 17 out of Philadelphia, PA.
Ed Hurst also ran regular "Record Hops" on the Pier daily during the Summer season.

I spent my summers in AC for a few years. With my Great gandmom- I965 thru 70. Tons of fun!
My memories of the Steel Pier will always be special because that was officially my first job in 1969 and I needed working papers. I worked at the food stand where Imade and sold hot dogs,popcorn and made pizza which was my specialty. No I didn't throw the dough up in the air and catch it because the pizza shells were ordered. The tourists had to stop at the food stand before they went to the end of the Pier where The Ed Hurst Show was. When the people came out of the Tony Grant's Theater, they would order pizza and the lines were long. I knew I made the best pizza because returning tourist would tell me that they came back to Atlantic City to visit the Steel Pier and get my pizza with extra cheese and believe me I loaded my pizza's with cheese. I was fortunate to meet a lot of celebrities such as Diana Ross,Tiny Tim & O.C.Smith and yes they had my pizza too. I danced off air with Leslie Campbell who was a regular dancer on Ed Hurst Show. I even remember the song (Dragging The Line) by Tommy James & the Shondells. I also sat in and helped with the records.

In 1972, I danced on Ede Hurst's show from Steel Pier.
I Did too.
So did I, in 1966 - 67.
Memory: I grew up at 31 S Stenton Pl in Atlantic City. The Tropicana shopping complex is there now. My grandmother took me to Steel Pier to see Count Basie when I was 5. My first concert! Great days.

I was on a show with Ed Hurst on the steel pier back in the sixties. It was fun.

You had a great job! Did you know Sarah and Wardy who had a game and sold programs? How about Harry at the passgate? I worked in the Accounting Office and in the information office and the box offices when the ladies went to lunch. Patty Dolan rode the High Diving Horse. I knew divers Barney Cipriani, Al Gonzalez, Rick White, and circus performers The Flying Farfans. I remember when Flyers announcer, Gene Hart, was the MC at the Water Circus. Cowboy Fridays! What an amazing, fun time!
Grew Up in AC DUCKTOWN BOY lots of memories girls on the boardwalk does anyone remember the Fucking Kazoo guy on the walk I heard he put his kids through college??? Might just be another A.C. LEDGGEND??

1961 and 62 I was the Steel Piers official photographer. Several photo in this video I took.
That poor horse with the blind girl in the saddle smh they used to hit it with a cattle prod to make it jump of the ramp so sad .
Hi Again Phillygal, Yes, I do remember Harry! Not familiar with the others though. More knowing of those who worked from the Diving Bell, back to the Water Circus, since that's where most of my time was spent. With Bart & his brother at the Bell & the girls at Khor Bros, and an English exchange student from Weybridge in Surrey, who sold "Ole English Lavender" in satchels. To this day, the scent of Lavender in any form, Takes me back to those MARVELOUS days! Summer - 1969.

one woman was blinded she hit the water so hard-and kept working!
That would be Sonora Webster she was a diving horse rider she hit the water with her eyes open and detached both retinas in the eyes and continued diving for 11 years blind and no one in the audience knew that she was blind. Her story is covered in the 1992 Walt Disney film Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken starring Gabrielle Anwar and Cliff Robertson as Sonora and Doc Carver who ran the diving horse act

we had a blast there...i saw al martino...and saw Louis Armstrong perform and got to shake his hand...that was a great attraction ...and remember Planters Peanuts right across the way...and shaking hands with Mr Peanut
Thank you ! I appeared there with our Band " The Gems " July 24- 30 1966 onTony Grant Stars of Tomorrow. The Supremes were also there that week . We met Gene Krupa the famous drummer and " The Supremes"It was a great place . Hey PhillyGal, I worked at the Pier myself. Summers of '68 & '69 managed the arcade area in the midway opposite the Diving Bell. What a total blast!! What was your job there? I also grew up in AC, so I went to the pier every week, every year since I was about 5 yrs old! Cowboy Fridays & Lunch on the picnic deck!! My family also knew several of the folks in the Water Circus, and the gals who rode the High Diving Horse, as well as "Captain Jack" the shows MC!!, I hope to spend eternity there!
My mom's uncle was Tony Grant she tells me lots of stories of the steel pier days

During the summer of '70, I worked at an arcade about 1 block from Steel Pier. I remember the diving horse and saw many rock acts there, including The Byrds and Chicago Transit Authority.
Saw my very first concert there back in,hmmm, 68 or so,Tommy James And The Shondells.I was right up front and had a blast.Been to 300 concerts since then.Thanks for posting
Hi Nemrac, I guess we were just in different parts of the Pier with different people. It was such an amazing time, and no matter where we were on the Pier itself, the memories and the fun were undeniable. It was a once in a lifetime fantastic experience that words cannot describe.
I'm so sorry to hear that your grandfather passed away. I always enjoyed watching him and the other high divers at the Pier. He was a great man and a very talented athelete.
