Love those HOGS and the colors how they change. Great videos Dan always look forward to seeing them, always professional. Thanks for bringing us along.
Hey DS1, they really are, like a bad tempered smaller Bull. I think I read somewhere many years ago that Sandbars and Bulls are closely related, sure wouldn't doubt it! Glad you enjoyed the video! Best, Dan
Thanks Jimmy, I've got a few friends that aren't divers as well and I think they like the videos as much as any diver! Thanks for watching and your comments! Best, Dan
Dan, your videos are amazing. Then you throw a shark into the mix and it takes them to another level of suspense. It blows me away how you maintain your breathing pattern throughout the entire dive despite a shark encounter. Gotta tell ya, you are the gold standard of spearfishing...period! Thank you for posting.
Thanks Henry, I appreciate your comments and also appreciate you watching. I've been spearfishing almost 50 years and I guess if you do anything for 50 years you better get better at it! lol. A common joke on the boat is I never burn a lot of air because I'm the one that fills the tanks...pretty funny, Best, Dan
Man, every time you turned around to check on your stringer I expected to see Mr. Sandbar munching on your catch. Glad he didn’t steal any fish! Thanks for another great video. Makes me want to go spearfishing again!
Thanks RJ, we really are blessed with having the MG out here. A lot of my buddies think it's less about guts and more of my having a really thick skull, lol. Best, Dan

Thanks BT, it was great to get out! I was going to wait a few more minutes on that Hog but who could resist that shot? It didn't bother that second Gag either as he rolled right on in there after that! That SandBar surprised me that he didn't swing on up. After 3 appearances and coming up 25' or so in the blood slick, I would have bet good money that he was going to commit. You just never know with those things! Best, Dan
Sandbar to fellow sharks: Good viz not as good as yesterday, then Dan showed up, filled his stringer in 13 minutes, I followed him up but he wasn’t having it.
Hey Mac, LOL, I really thought he was going to do it, I was sending him "if you don't start any crap, there won't be any crap" messages. Maybe he listened! Thanks for your comment! Best, Dan
Thanks Gary, I was surprised than he didn't try and force it as well. After he came up 20'-30', I was expecting him to go for it. Glad he didn't. Best, Dan
Thanks Mark, lol, it was totally his call. I really thought he was going to do it, and then he didn't! Most likely a good move on his part. Those things are tough, I had one come in from behind me years ago and slammed into my left Shoulder with her pec (I think it was his pec) as he went by. Scared the crap out of me. She did a 180 and charged and I tried to shove the gun down her throat. She did another big circle and charged again and I'd barely had time to slide a PH on and shot her right in the face. She did a few cartwheels and died. I screamed some profanities at her and went back to spearfishing. Another diver wanted the teeth (whatever) so 45 minutes later we went back and pulled her up to the boat. It was a pregnant female, cut her open and took each pup out of it's sack and tossed them overboard. Every one of them swam off quickly. This was after no O2 from dead mother for close to an hour. Amazing animals. Best, Dan
You’re a machine, man! Nice work! I can’t believe how calm it is down there. Up here in the Pensacola north country, it’s been 3-5 almost everyday in March, but that’s to be expected around here. April usually starts giving us some nice days.
Thanks BR, the last 2 trips have been super flat. The crew thinks I've hired someone else to judge the weather, lol. Yes normally we start getting more calm days by mid April as well! Best, Dan
Thanks Yanki! Really glad you're enjoying the videos! When I watch some of my crews videos I sometimes feel like I'm along on their dives as well! Best, Dan
I like the fact that ur videos are jus videos...they aren't edited & over crowded with plot of other things...keep up d good work..jus hope ull post more often...
STR88, thanks brother, I made the decision to not add Music to them a few years ago and have been pleased with the decision. I'll definitely be posting more as the weather calms down! Best, Dan
It would be really neat if you'd show an image of the bottom machine/sonar before the dive. As a boat fisherman, it would be neat to see both perspectives and would help in learning how to read the marks and such. Just a thought/request!
Dan you’re a fish magnet! You barely moved from ur original spot. The fish just kept coming to you! I did have a scare when u jump edited and that remora was at your fins! I thought it was that Shark!😬 great video! Keep em coming!
Thanks MHAP, yeah I wished I had stoned that first Gag so he didn't make a shark attracting ruckus but it didn't happen! That particular spot is the only hot spot on a half mile long ridge and thus is usually pretty sharky! I don't know why that second Gag decided to commit suicide and ghost in near the end of the dive but am glad he did! Always a good idea to have gun loaded and ready for whatever shows up! Best, Dan
Sorta watching as I am working on another monitor then out of the corner of my eye I catch you attaching the powerhead and instantly got my attention turned back to the video! LOL
Hey BB, my first gun had the flopper on top and I guess I just grew accustomed to having them there. I doubt there's any performance benefit either way, but the flopper location does impact how the spear flies. If you're used to a bottom mount and switch to a top mount, your accuracy will suffer until you acclimate to it. Best to go top or go bottom but don't mix them up. Best, Dan
first hahaha... love the mkddle grounds and natural bottom videos... i dive alabama waters mostly so dont get alot of natural bottom unless we head towards FL on some lobster trips....
Hey Jason, I've always felt extremely lucky to have the MG out here. It's truly a special place! A friend of mine lives in Mobile but used to love to come down and dive the reefs out here. Best, Dan
Good to see you out on the water brother...keep doing what you do... buddy said they have been seeing quite a few big bluefin migrating into the Gulf from the Atlantic while out fishing. Heard one was even caught in the keys the other day. With those bad boys moving the big toothy boys are fallowing..Also heard they caught a white shark from the beach in Florida the other day.. stay safe and shoot em up..
Hey MDV, you're def right about that. When schools of food come swimming into any area, the Sharks aren't far behind! I've never seen a Bull Shark on the MG in March until this last trip. I'm def not a doom and gloomer but all signs are pointing to a bad Shark year. Hope I'm wrong! Best, Dan
That big remora made me wonder where is your leader? How much time decompresing? what depth? Gas? Thanks for your Vids. Very smooth calm see no current?
TG007, that spot maxes out around 120' (37M). I was diving a 29-30% Nitrox mix and did about 5 minutes of Deco. It was really more like a long safety stop as a dedicated deco stop wasn't really required. But always better to be safe than not. We did have current, mostly the normal, out of SW early day and NE late day. Best, Dan
Dan I am always amazed in all your hunting that you always breath at the same rate and you never seem to get your breathing rate or heart beat up no matter how big the fish you shoot or how much it struggles etc. You do exactly the same with sharks. I stood off a bigger shark recently and did well overall but my heart rate just kept increasing and it spooked my whole dive and I overbreathed and my dive was shorter due to low air on scuba than usual. I also do freedive spearing and have had the same issue. Please let me know some of your wisdom on always managing no matter what comes to keep your heart and breathing rate normal and slow - it seems like you somehow disconnect your heart/breathing robotically from the rest of your body? Any advice is much appreciated. Many thanks!
Hey Austin, yes mostly. We also use it in the Winter months for warming up cans of soup, yoo hoo, stuff like that. I took a younger guy with us a couple trips ago and he's def a believer in hot water in your suit now! Best, Dan
I just shoot for food and a little fun. I have enjoyed your videos. What are you doing with your hands after you grab the fish? I would like to know another humane way to dispatch fish.
Thanks LTD, glad you like the videos and thanks for letting me know that. I carry a kill knife and use it when necessary, in deep water the time constraints would make it tough. Best, Dan
We just took my Parker out of Cedar Key this weekend. Suwanee seems to be dumping a ton of green water into the gulf so we moved further south. Had a pretty good haul of red grouper, mangos and a few big hogs. Any tips for making the transition to solo dives? Epic dive, Dan!
Hey EF, I heard it was Green up near the Corner. Thanks for verifying! I think all the training schools teach/preach against solo diving. With a competent buddy, you're def safer than when diving alone. As for me, diving to make a living, I'm willing to take on the increased risk of solo diving. But I would never recommend that to other people. With the vastly increased Shark population we now enjoy, diving with a buddy makes even more sense! Glad you guys got out and smacked 'em, sure was beautiful for March weather! Best, Dan
I'm not a deep diver so excuse my ignorance. Would a lift bag be helpful for something like this with a shark lingering around. Just to get your catch back to the surface?
Great thought. My sons dive around 95 ft bit often go to 110 in the Atlantic and they often use airbags to send fish to the surface when sharks appear.
Hey Colin, we do use them occasionally. A big Sandbar can and will follow a stringer up and destroy it before a diver can get on up there. I'll use them in the Summer when the Bull's are around or sometimes deep water when the packs of spinners (Hornets) are thick. Best, Dan
Thanks Dillon, much appreciated! It's a home made gun we build ourselves. I'm def planning on doing a lot of diving this season and posting a lot of video's. Best, Dan
Allen, it's a custom gun we make ourselves. Roughly based on an older style Sea Hornet but using better quality parts with tighter tolerances. The PPD holder is really just a chunk of rubber I bought from Northern Tool, cut it to the right size and drilled two 7/8" holes (the OD of my PH's) into. Attached to the gun with two SS wood screws. I recently ordered a tripod for my gopro and am going to really try and put up a few "how to" videos soon. Best, Dan
@@danmacmahon3973Loved the sea hornet. Lost mine when a shark tried to eat my leg. Just got a new jbl and like how you have yours setup. how do you have the extra powerband secured to the bottom?
Hey MW, I use a 7.62/54R Russian round. Basically equivalent to a 30:06. Easy to build a casing for as it's a rimmed cartridge. I try and buy the Military surplus rounds with factory water proofing but they're getting hard to find lately. Best, Dan

@@danmacmahon3973 Oh wow. I held Snapper permits begining late 80s 12 yrs. King ect. Back injuries have kept me out of the Northern Gulf over here for last 10+ yrs. But I still have a 2004 21' Cape Horn I like. Think I'll let the grandkids have Lol. I'm bout done
Hey Parker, thanks buddy! Yes, I make our bands. I really like that bright Orange material, doesn't bother the fish and really helps with keeping a close eye on the gun. Especially in dirty or stirred up water. Neptonics (813-867-3250) sales it with the small ID inner hole. Yes, in shallower stuff, a single HP 120. Best, Dan
Het Eric, Hogs are open year round in the GOM. Grouper are open commercially year round but are managed by an IFQ fishery plan. As long as you have quota, you can fish for them. Best, Dan
Nice shooting as always. Keep the videos coming. I'll throw in the usual spear gun breakdown video jab. Don't respond to the last part- but you ain't a diver until you've pooped in your wetsuit . Best wishes Dan!
Hey Mr. Spicy, lol, i swear I'll get to it. I need to order a gopro tripod I guess? I've never taken a gopro video except in the water. I never have pooped in my WS, but personally know a couple of guys who have! Really crappy situation! Best, Dan
CF, it's just warming salt water for our wet suits during the colder months. Really nice on second or third morning to immerse your cold suit in there and warm it up before putting on! Best, Dan
Hey Kevin, they're from Neptonics (813-867-3250). Yeah I didn't want to fight with that Shark and you never know what a 'Bar is going to do. Glad it worked out for both of us! Best, Dan
DPHD, I see them occasionally way back in caves, etc. When I used to fish more, we'd catch them pretty regularly in the summer months. Caught a big Red One once and he fell off the line into the boat, I moved towards him and he "walked" to the other side of the center console. I went around that way and he "walked" back to the other side. Pretty smart and great eyesight for being out of his element! Best, Dan
Seafari, we use it to provide warm water for heating up shower water, providing warm water for the wetsuits in the Winter, warming up Wetsuits before donning on multi day trips, and for heating cans of soup, yoo hoo and stuff like that. Works well. Best, Dan

That boat looks like it rides incredible and got the stating power for the middle grounds with room to spare.
What type and brand of gun are you using please?
Best wishes from sunny and hot Libya!
Dan answered that same question ( was from ALLEN GOULETTE ) if you re-read all the questions higher up .

I want that powerhead holder lol
Hey Aric, I ordered a Tripod this morning and will attempt to create a few "how to" videos and will def do one on making that. Best, Dan
What is the biggest Hogfish you have ever shot ?
Hey Mike, 25.2 pounds gutted on a fish house scale (and fish house scales don't weigh heavy, lol) 3 days after I shot it. Best, Dan
Well done sir.
Thanks SeaBass, much appreciated! Best, Dan
Congratss on that 20k subs man! you make your own bands? I like those bright orange ones! diving with a single Steel 120?
Hey Parker, thanks buddy! Yes, I make our bands. I really like that bright Orange material, doesn't bother the fish and really helps with keeping a close eye on the gun. Especially in dirty or stirred up water. Neptonics (813-867-3250) sales it with the small ID inner hole. Yes, in shallower stuff, a single HP 120. Best, Dan

I'm going to middle grounds tomorrow
EV, awesome! Hope you had a great trip! Best, Dan
Hey Dan are hog and grouper season open in your area, or do you have special commercial seasons for your area?
Best, Dan
What’s cooking in the big pot?
CF, it's just warming salt water for our wet suits during the colder months. Really nice on second or third morning to immerse your cold suit in there and warm it up before putting on! Best, Dan
nice hog. how deep?
Can’t ask for flatter seas makes easy day
That is the truth Greg! I could really really get used to it ! Best, Dan
New fins mate?
Hey Dom, yeah I got them late last Summer and am soooooo glad I did. Amazing thrust and require less effort. Sweet! Best, Dan
Hahahaha you was gona blow is head off🤣🤣 he said to himself Dan don't f*$k around...is those rubber the C4 brand?
Hey Kevin, they're from Neptonics (813-867-3250). Yeah I didn't want to fight with that Shark and you never know what a 'Bar is going to do. Glad it worked out for both of us! Best, Dan
u never find any big octopus ?
DPHD, I see them occasionally way back in caves, etc. When I used to fish more, we'd catch them pretty regularly in the summer months. Caught a big Red One once and he fell off the line into the boat, I moved towards him and he "walked" to the other side of the center console. I went around that way and he "walked" back to the other side. Pretty smart and great eyesight for being out of his element! Best, Dan
Tell us more about this propane situation you got going on. Are you having a fish fry?!
Seafari, we use it to provide warm water for heating up shower water, providing warm water for the wetsuits in the Winter, warming up Wetsuits before donning on multi day trips, and for heating cans of soup, yoo hoo and stuff like that. Works well. Best, Dan
Nice to see no lion fish there
Hey Greg, It was strange, they were thick as fleas and then that last area was almost devoid of them, def a mystery! Best, Dan
how deep?
Hey TM, 100'-120' FSW (34M or so) Best, Dan

Fish murderer, once again fish in a barrel. how do you go free diving? I'm sure you can,but spearing with air is fish murder, not a fan.free diving, one fish at a time now that's real spearing.no respect for you.
