$300 Espresso Machine with Gear Pump?

- After filming this, the listing on Alibaba went away. This video is NOT an endorsement, persay, of the product; moreso, it is meant to be a plea to manufacturers to implement rotary pumps (the listing I bought said rotaryn, though it sounded like a gear pump. Turns out it is a gear pump). I find this machine to be a fun little gadget and perhaps worth your while when it becomes listed again (I messaged the seller and they are listing again soon), but I do have worries on longevity with hot water going through the pump. It is also quite finnicky, as shown in the video. Anyway, I hope the video was fun nonetheless!
Shoutout to @CoffeeGearLab for the recommendation on the machine in my discord!

Although the listing I bought from on Alibaba said this was a rotary pump, it is a gear pump. This makes much more sense considering a simple potentiometer can control it AND the sound is more congruent to a gear pump.
Apologies for that confusion.
Also, it is apparently sold in Thailand under the Typhoon brand.
Awesome Lance!! Adding to it a PTC ceramic heating element would solve the problem of a cold group. BTW I believe you should have opened it up and shown us what's inside!! I'm already thinking on replacing my vibratory pump with a Fluid-O-Tech gear pump myself! Gear pumps + Gaggiuino is the future of home espresso!!
Lance! I've searched Alibaba for the product and it seems that they have removed ALL of the listings for this product!!! It would seem you just cracked into a secret product ONLY meant the be released to the highest members of the CCP!!
Hi Lance! just want to let you know that the air pump modification into many manual espresso maker is increasing in its number and variety (the trend started especially by modifier of coffee slow bar in Thailand but now expanding to many Southeast Asian countries as well - also here in Indonesia). I've been using similar system with Staresso SP-300 Mirage Plus with air pump modification which enables me to use Xiaomi/Redmi Mi 2 air pump (which can pump at maximum around 10 bar). I usually stop by 8,9 bar/130 psi on my Xiaomi/Redmi Mi 2 air pump. Crema is good in terms of the price you get from such modification.
That makes more sense, thanks for the clarification. I have a BLDC rotary pump with pressure control via a BLDC controller and potentiometer in my machine, and my pump is way louder than the pump in this video.
@@TheMartinChnnl Hi I have a gagiuino is someone have already do it ? Im interested
Lance, to me it's clear that this machine should act as the base of YOU creating a perfect espresso machine!!! Get together with cool people that builds machines and just DO IT YOURSELF for all of us!!
"I'm not being super scientific with this" he said holding a pipette full of espresso
😂👍😂
In Lance’s next video he builds his own espresso machine for as cheap as possible, with a pump and a group head and various parts from Ali express
Ali express is god
Please, editor, don’t play music as loud as talk
It's not that bad
its pretty bad mate
WHAT?!
This…
I can hear fine. Maybe get your hearing checked.
Just a bit more refinement and this could be great! Thanks for showing us Lance 🙂
Could easily be driven by 12V Power tool batteries many people already own (Milwaukee, Dewalt etc.). = One less cable.
Both waterways could be routed internally to exit at the same spot and hoses could be bonded together. Water exit fed back into the kettle with a slightly longer hose/lower exit spot in the kettle = One less cable.
Using ones precision hot kettle (which many coffee enthusiasts would also already own) as hot water source is ingenious, gives repeatable results and wastes no materials for producing an integrated heater.
I really like the idea. I absolutely would consider buying such a coffee machine as my first motor driven one, if it was a little more refined and purchasable on a less "industrial" platform
Exactly my thoughts!
it's jank but the kind of jank that is extremely promising.
This almost feels like a proof of concept or something that could be the mechanical base for a larger espresso machine with a boiler and water container
You could create a very cool machine that has a kettle for pour overs which also works as the boiler for the espresso machine part. Have them be their own things, but interact with each other. So you can start buy just buying the kettle for pour overs, and then buy the espresso part at a later date.
@@georgestone8099temp in a kettle is not at all stable from top to bottom.
@@RandyLittleStudios that's fine, we're not trying to be professionals
@@RandyLittleStudios But the kettle would be custom designed. Put the temp sensor next to the spout outlet in the bottom and the temp would be correct for the water as used
@@error.418 has nothing to do with being professional. Has to do with being able to dial in a repeat able espresso shot.
I reckon you should make your own machine Lance. Partner with a manufacturer - you'd make something special.
He already did that with brevile.
You’ve become quite skilful at operating all kinds of grinders and espresso machines that are turned away from you. 😁
Thanks!
The way his face changed when he sipped that shot! Absolute delight to watch!
Yes man! Finally! Let's move on to a new coffee machine standard!
Thanks for the positivity, Lance. Your outro made me smile.
Had the best espresso of my life at motors coffee in paris. Nice sweatshirt mang, small world we live in.
How good that it even has the over pressure valve and an water discharge from the group head as if it has a solenoid valve !
Dumping water into the kettle tho didn’t really make sense to me, because it might’ve even didn’t go into the group head.
But such a fun little espresso device I agree!
Man, you look great! Great video as always Lance.
awesome concept for a simplistic and cheap machine with allot of room to experiment; particularly of you already have a temperature controlled kettle
In my opinion this little machine is actually BRILLIANT 🤩
It's brilliant but could be more brilliant...
@ agree, but it‘s a great starting point.
Great project idea to salvage old machines with bad electrical components. I gutted my dying barista express, and I have a frame with a group head, and a vibratory pump. hooking up a voltage control thingy shouldn't be that hard for pressure profiling, I just never thought to feed a tube to my already-temp-controlled kettle but that saves so much complexity.
I have a rotary pump in my HX machine, and I was surprised at how slick it made the whole experience. They're made for the job (well, literally) and ideal for adding flow control 😊
Did it come with the rotary pump
@@alexlazaridisf.7276 Yes, it was an optional version of the model. A little more expensive, but not by much.
@@FatNorthernBigot I wasn't offered that option on my ECM Classika. Oh well.
Hot damn this is the jankiest coolest thing I've seen in a while
That shot… you madman 😂
This is nice, I like the modularity of this thing. Maybe some DIY upgrades are comming soon.
Ah, that was the thing lurking behind on the table and looking boss. Was wondering. So esthetic 🤩
Lance your are using your influence to change the coffee world and industry. Thank you for sharing this to us!
Wow, I love this kind of surprise
Ooh, nonono hear me out...
Arduino the shit out of this thing, embed onto a bar table, do some fancy plumbing connecting it to a cheap PID boiler you also use for rapid pour over orders, repeat 3 times and you got a really nice cafe setup.
I'm open for consulting 😂
yo what u mean a cheap PID boiler, you got me interested, can you buy these pieces separately and make a makeshift espresso machine?
Your Gaggiuino video inspired me to get one and do the upgrade and it has been so amazing. I have gotten so many amazing espressos since completing that. The amount of profiles out there is really daunting but fun to explore. I would love to see you make a video about the different aspects/dialing in of profiling with machines like the Gaggiuino and Decent as well as some fun profiles to try out. Just an idea but regardless I am a huge fan of the work you've been doing and can't wait to see what's next!
Many tech engineers could create such systems on their own, find providers of the required parts and list the people who could assemble them. To then publish it all for free, making easy, affordable espresso with the coffee of your choice, available in virtually any home. This would lead to this simple idea becoming the next mainstream in home espresso making. Provided, there is no backlash from major coffee machine producing / selling companies, reducing all of this to a one-time home project instead.
This is the same design as the Velofuso. I wonder what came first.
I think they just need a way to better manage the cables and tubes. This is a better option than anything like a flair, to me.
you can DIY a beautiful tube setup, tbh
I took plastic tank out of GCP and add hot 80 C water to double wall glass container and pull shots for many mos now. Everyone has their panties in a wad. Ukla is going to die .. it’s not recomnded etc etc…. Calm down . Your vid gave me a better idea… Ditch glass and pull from Stag kettle! Thanks Lance,I love it. BTW , a few more bucks and you can get that contraption and forget brass boiler.😊
Forget the Stag, there are way better kettles out there for less, and especially double-walled for better heat retention, but yes
Using over the top expensive stuff with cheap solutions is a great way to understand how much the cheap product hinders you from getting good results.
Side by side blind comparisons with an expensive product replacing the cheap one would make for interesting content, in my opinion.
The only thing left out would be how long the cheaper product would last, or work under load, which would require extra time and effort. But worse results of such test are to be expected.
Lance being a force for GOOD and a rockstar ❤️🔥
Found this here in China on taobao, but the listings I found were about $400 USD.
It looks like the kind of thing that'd provide a great starting point for tinkerers. Also probably great for those with camper vans or plugging into an electric vehicle and making espresso "outdoors", though there are other options for making espresso truly outdoors with no electricity.
I did enjoy my day. Including this very video. Thanks.
that looks awesome. I kinda want one.
In China they're having an espresso renaissance. They're making all these creative, compact, affordable alternatives to the traditional expensive machines, that seem to also work pretty great.
They never had espresso culture to have a renaissance. I do look forward to seeing what they can do though. Their disruption to the EV market is outstanding
if we talk about cheap option yeah I can see a lot good espresso machine with low price range and all kind machine like pneumatic or manual machine, but if we talk about like expensive rotary pump machine I don't think they do better then other company that's already exsist.
@@veganpottertheveganthey aren't disrupting the EV market. They are the EV market.
@@veganpotterthevegan Espresso is having a renaissance - in China.
@gregavolk you obviously don't know what that word means
At 9:17 - _"The time is over where you're charging $2,000 plus for a machine with a vibratory pump. Get rotaries!"_
Yes, we are talking about you, Decent, but not just you, everyone else. This is such a brilliant idea, not quite the brilliant execution but, wow, what a start. I get that this is Version 1.0 of something new but I don't want to be drawing hot water through silicone tubing for my espresso. Give us stainless steel water lines. Nitpicking aside, I've never understood why espresso machine manufacturers use vibration pumps. They're cheap and awful. Just imagine if the Gaggia Classic Pro used a rotary pump. Yes, charge more money. Make the machine slightly bigger. It's not rocket science. We don't need hunks of sculpted metal on our kitchen counters. We need simple, minimalist machines. Nothing compares to the Olympia Cremina but the world wants pump machines. Can simple rotary pump machines give the Olympia Cremina a run for its money? This machine is proof that they can.
There are very good arguments against gear pumps and for vibratory ones. The biggest being controllability.
@@UloPe Obviously there's reasons for vibratory pumps or manufacturers wouldn't be using them. Cost is but one factor. Still, if you put a vibratory pump in a machine and next to it put a rotary pump in the same machine, 9 out of 10 people will want the rotary pump machine.
I love the idea of the accessories being orders of magnitude more expensive than the machine itself
Had to end with a meme
@@LanceHedrick appreciated, I laughed and enjoyed
Ah, the ‘best shot of your life’ machine we were teased about. lol
The original company that sells this is Typhoon. I believe this is the Typhoon M9 espresso machine. Although they have a different stand
Good note! I'll try to find a listing to post.
maybe by the same maker
It's more like China made it and a company put a private label brand name on it. Not an uncommon market practice
Out of curiosity, where can I find the cup featured? Looks amazing and good looking.
Thank you!!
A pneumatic approach could offer good flow control without the contamination and maintenance issues of an in-line hot water pump. Use pressurized air from a tank or pump to force water out of the boiler into the group head. There are a number of decent-looking pneumatic espresso machines like this on Aliexpress for under $300, some under $200. I've never seen them reviewed.
Never change, loved this weird video
Love the direction your channel is in lately. Proving you don’t need the $10,000 setup to make good espresso. It’s fun!
Don’t think I’ve ever clicked on a video so quickly
Genius and madness are closely related
Eva beer line would be great on that
When we decide to raise or lower the dose instead of grinding finer or coarser, I remember you spoke about this in one of your videos but i forgot which one,
If they increase a bit the heigth and add a comfy drip tray...one tube might be simply "locked" on the side of the until the tray with any inexpensive magnetized wire clamps (to they even exist? ;-) )
I was squinting my eyes for that possible super sour shot at the end..
You look amazing buddy….congrats ❤…greetings from a Portuguese from Porto leaving is GA, US
FUN-FUN-FUN !! Lance, my man, you are looking great! What the heck are you doing? Pls share...
Lifting, cardio, calorie restrictions for my BMR and acitivty levels (about 2700 cals daily filled with lots of chicken and rice and veggies lol)
This is amazing
Wild little machine
Hi Lance, in the 58mm debate you have seen through the commercial logic pushing for 58. The reason for rotary pumps is also so you can connect them directly to your water supply, which also makes sense for a bar but not for a home. I have never done a comparative tasting of rotary vs vibratory myself so I stay sceptic. Beyond commercial logic why would rotary always taste better?
Vibratory (vibe) pumps cause many rapid pulses, with a sensitive enough tool you can see the pressure fluctuate about ±0.5 bars.
Whether that really matters, who knows. I've experienced most of my best and most memorable shots through the Decent DE1
I think it's more that vibratory pumps r loud for me
Happy new haircut!
I’d like to try that shot profile you did at the end, but it seems very finicky with having to control the temperature as well. I’m not sure if I can do that level of control with the Gen 2 Gaggiuino, maybe the Gen 3 can 😅
I love that machine. Very reasonable price and everyone has a kettle at home. Perhaps it could be improved in the style of Meticulous Espresso.
Kinda ingenious!
How much water does the input tube hold? I'm curious how much of the cooled water actually got to the coffee. It's a super fun experiment
I was thinking about that while watching. Also the brew head and porta filter are not heated.
Then the question would be, is the rotary pump more superior compared to gear pump?
Why does this video bring up memories of Weekend Adventure on ABC television? I think it’s the music, still weird
Any chance you'd look at some of the other aliexpress levers, Lance? The ITOP IT-HPEN-SN looks very interesting. PID temp control manual lever, also has the ability to hook it up to one of their standalone milk steamers for preheating. I think all their gear is the same as ALM kopi, just under a different name.
7:01 You sure did and had me lol!
i would buy this for the compactness
Brilliant!
So cool! I kinda love how the adjuster looks like a combination lock
I want you to engineer this to something else.
I never understood why machines that use a rotary pump, still use some sort of flow restrictor. Instead of just controlling the flow rate to control pressure. Glad to see this in a very simplistic model.
Separation between the pump and the group head in standard designs. This design closes that gap allowing the direct control you seek.
I kind of feel like after a certain amount of time, the stand will deform / bent and making it not fully 'flat'
9:09
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Any bets on how long it’ll take before some awesome mods for this machine will come out?
The most obvious ones will be for controlling the pump I think.
What's the benefit of a rotary pump over a vibratory pump?
It does sound more like a gear pump no? Ofc, that's still a rotary, but vane =! gear and rotary as a word usually points to the vane pump kind no?
i would have bought this so fast
You look so healthy lance! I hope you also feel better overall. I love that you at least show yourself comfortable in your body and your talents! Cheers!
Even if the listing was still up, they would have been sold out with a backlog by the end of this video.
I have this small vibe pump machine call super58 I bought from Taobao for around 160 or 170usd, it doesn't heat water, but it's easy to preheat just go throw hot water 2 or 3 times, but the banger is it has OPV so I can pull my 7bar shot, and it's also 58mm so I'm able to use VST filter, tho I never tried like over 1000usd machine the only one machine I have before is some sort manual lever machine, but I'm sure the quality of espresso it produce is pretty much the same as silva or other espresso machine in this price range, and it's only 160usd, that's crazy.
What is the fancy little cup? Need one to meme the hell out of my wife
I thought this was from 4 years ago. lance looks so young without his facial hair
Very cool 🤓
If there is one thing I hate about my present espresso machine is the vibratory pump, this is a step in the right direction.
Can anyone find a link to this? Would love to check it out
Is that the Weber tamper? How do you like it?
Is this the same type of machine that you can attach a bike pump/air compressor to?
Don’t think so, this one already has a pump inside it
No
It's the packaging...Unless it's a self contained unit, I don't see commercial possibilities for something with a separate kettle and silicone hoses going back and forth. The concept works, though.
How do we know if a pump is good safe?
Seems like from Typhoon’s Facebook that is the Gen 1 and there is a Gen 2 that is coming. It is stubby. And I think it says $24500 bhat which is $700ish usd.
Hmm, so, what if i get this machine, pull the boiler from my Nuova Simonelli Oscar 1, replace the plastic tube with brass line, and make a lil monster of a machine? (I get that it's not as simple as that, but one can only dream)
The Turbina grinder guy has an espresso machine similar to this.
This looks like a stripped down Velofuso. Same idea: you heat your own water, it's just a gear pump and a portafilter with a hose.
I like it
why rotary or gear pump is better?
Has Lance been hitting the gym? Definitely looking more svelt or something, fair play
Brilliant.
Rotary? Nahh, apex seal maintenance would be a pain.
Curious... could you point me to a video that shows what an "apex seal" is and why it would be such a pain to maintenance?
