  • I played more than a dozen new games at SPIEL Essen 23, and the abstract strategy game Passo was the best of the bunch. Let me tell you why...

    Thanks for posting this vid. I made 25 blocks out of 1/4" ply and played this with my GF and her cousin. It was super fun and quick gameplay. It was interesting how many moves and game play variations were possible. It was alot of fun and the whole game fits in a ziplock bag for easy travel. Love this game.

    Looks marvelous. Thanks for the review, have ordered off the back of it, and suspect many others will too until it very quickly sells out!

    A nice, simple little game which looks like a whole load of fun. Great video mate, I would never have looked at this one if I hadn't seen this.

    Sounds really interesting but i wouold question would you not just be able to create a stack of 3 of your own colour on the back row and just block the enemy from jumping over you?

      The opponent can still win if you cannot make a move, and they can eliminate your tower from the board by “erasing” the tiles around it.

    So far, this is my favorite game from Spiel 2023 as well. I haven't played too many games yet, though.

    People should learn that the best games are not necessarily the ones that get promoted or have an appealing cover. The inside : always be curious, with an opened mind. This game is a prime example of that ⭐

    This feels like something that's come out of the Looney Pyramids community. An abstract strategy game using a five-by-five grid where you move pieces one step at a time trying to move them off the board on your opponent's side, and stopping pieces moving by putting your pieces on top of them? That's Jeanne Rink Kramer-Smyth's 2011 game Freeze Tag.
    Just to be clear, not trying to say that Passo rips off Freeze Tag (there are several ways it's different, such as Passo's squares disappearing, and Freeze Tag having different size pieces that can capture smaller opponents pieces and move them, rather than just block them), just explaining why I think it feels like a Looney Pyramid game.
    I personally feel that it could do with a Santorini-esque redesign, as it's a little plain at the moment: ten wooden disks and 25 cardboard squares.

      I get what you're saying. The Looney pyramids have inspired lots of abstract designs over the years. -WEM

      Likely not solvable with the Power Tiles

      I don't have to worry about that as I'm unlikely to see any such solution. I'm not playing these types of games in tournaments! -WEM

      There would literally not even be anything to print on the paper, lmao. What are you even asking for here, a PDF consisting of cutout silhouettes that illustrate what circles and squares look like? Personally I'm just gonna take the backside of the tiles from Tsuro and the stacking pieces from Dvonn.

    Eric, when you make a stack of 3 pieces you say it’s locked. Does it only mean you cannot add a fourth piece or does it also mean you cannot move the top piece off that stack?
    This game looks intriguing, but I fear it is too easy to make one yourself, especially if you don’t plan to play with the power tiles - and even then it shouldn’t be too difficult. In that way, it’s a bit like Shobu (although I like the look of Shobu a bit better than this one’s).

    • @boardgamegeek
      @boardgamegeek  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A stack of three pieces can't have a piece added on top; the owner of the piece on top can move it, something I demonstrated during the game explanation when I moved a red piece onto a black piece that had approached the tower.
      I'm not sure why you fear it being "too easy to make one yourself". You're not the designer or publisher! Ideally folks respect the work that goes into creating something and are willing to pay for that work. -WEM

      @tiagomarques9822 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@boardgamegeek I think you misinterpreted my words: I agree with you that designers and publishers should be rewarded for their work. In my line of work (composer and arranger) I have exactly the same problem, with plenty of people making illegal photocopies of my scores, so I really don’t do that to others: I’m willing and glad to pay for their work. But unfortunately our opinions don’t make this game less prone to be easily copied.
      And indeed, you did show it would be possible to take a piece off of a stack of 3.

    • @JorWat25
      @JorWat25 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tiagomarques9822 I do somewhat agree with you. With so few components, it's almost too easy to homebrew. Ten disks in two colours, and 25 squares, that's not hard to find. You could use some coins as the disks and some playing cards as squares, things almost everyone has easily accessible.
      Like, it almost feels too simple to actually sell in a box, it seems like (to reference another comment I posted elsewhere) a Looney Pyramid or Piecepack game, where you'd just post the rules online, and people would use their pre-existing components to play it. In fact, if it weren't for the fact that a Piecepack set only has 24 tiles, you could use one to play this fairly easily.
      That said, yes, the extra power discs do make it more unique.

    The first player advantage seems huge.
    How would you compare this to tak, gigamic games, or the gipf series?

    • @boardgamegeek
      @boardgamegeek  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The disappearing board in Passo is reminiscent of DVONN and ZÈRTZ, but you have fewer pieces, so there's less "table setting", if you know what I mean. You're in the midst of action almost immediately. I've played Tak only a few times years ago, so I can't compare it.
      I lost going both first and second, but maybe I'm just bad at the game. More plays will tell... -WEM
