My understanding, it turns over a few times like that to do some internal checks on the engine, that's why no matter if it is warm or cold it takes the same amount of turn overs before firing
It depends on how you ride, if you head to Northern Ontario or Quebec then the 4 stroke makes sense, better fuel mileage, not carrying oil , and if you get a top speed to 70 mph your good as most trails have a 45 speed limit
Great review! Love the type of trail you we were riding.I've been riding a 900 ace Skidoo Blizzard and love it! I'm sure this will be a winner for Polaris....but I think the 900ace sounds way better
Hey Rock..........great video.......................how does it cruise between 45 - 65 mph, thats my sweet spot on the trail.............................thanks
It actually cruises at those speeds very good. If your cruising at 65 and punch the throttle that is where the lack of excitement is. But honestly I was impressed with the power.
Sounds like a damn lawnmower. For non turbo 4 stroke sleds the 1049 yamaha is the clear winner with the 900ace not far behind it. That polaris looks about on par with the 600ace
Amen...21k on my 1049 what a amazing sled for not having turbo power...uses non premium fuel and stupid reliable ive never had to touch the engine aside from a plug change to be safe
I've been thinking about the new 858 for next season also they look amazing not sure if I can walk away from polaris I'm still holding hope for the 9r in a trail sled but if not that catalyst would be sweet
I can tell you my Yamaha Vector 4 stroke had no lack of power and excitement . It's downfall was it's weight and handling . Also it was loud. I'm not sure the Polaris would be as exciting to ride compared to a Yamaha or ski doo . Well Yamaha is no more so why even talk about it . I'm loving my ski doo 600 R , now that's fun . Good review.
Hey Rock, cool video as usual I really enjoy the test ride/ comparative videos! If you get the Cat what track length would you go with? What is your favorite for the trails we have in the nek? I’ve been told the 129 is the nimble trail rocket and the 137 has a little better ride and is good for touring. I’d like to get your opinion thanks!
With cat and yamaha basically getting out of 4 stroke polaris needs to turbo for sure. I will consider this to replace my 1049 when the time comes if they do turbo it. Not sure what cat plans to do with 4 stroke catalyst setup seeing the yamaha turbo wont fit.
Yeah as small as the body work is on the catalyst I don’t see them getting a 4 stoke unless maybe they had a very slim parallel twin but I doubt that’s going to happen.
I have the same exact sled, 2024 S4 Adventure. I also have a 2015 Renegade 900 ACE. The ACE is a better motor for sure. One thing I noticed is that you were able to start the motor without squeezing the brake lever, the safety switch must be disabled?
Oh wow, both the same sleds what are the odds! The Polaris S4 isn’t mine though I was just test riding it. I had the parking brake on when I started the polaris. I’m not a fan of this safety feature.. never seen that on a sled before.
@@rockspowersportsthe ACE is a smoother running engine, it’s actually quieter too and sounds much better. We drag raced the ACE and S4 and the ACE is both quicker and faster. On the same hardpacked lake trail the ACE ran 91mph and the S4 ran 79mph. Granted these were speedometer readings but side by side the ACE is quicker and faster. And mine is the 90hp ACE not the 95hp variant. That being said, we live in northern, MN and cross into Canada and the ability to run any fuel and the extended range of the 4-strokes is a definite advantage. I don’t dislike the sled, I was just expecting a little more refinement from a sled that is 9 years newer than my ACE. Specifically talking about the engine.
And you can feel it. The twin cylinder is much taller than the ACE and the oil tank is up high on the Polaris so not only is it heavier but it’s also top heavier

Great video. Youre going to have to do something similar in the summer on a atv
Sure will.
Each their own..2 stroke is my choice for sleds.

Yup I'm thinking about three 858! My Indy xc 800 129 still goes good but time for a change!
I’m trying to find a 600 catalyst to try first before I pull the trigger on the 858. I haven’t ridden the new chassis yet.

Polaris hasn’t announced there 25’s yet so you never know. Not interested in the boost?
@rockspowersports I hope this is the year. The prices on those boosted sleds are outrageous so that's kindof made me look past them but they are nice

Yeah those Yamaha’s pushed some power even with no turbo. We just picked up a 2019 Ski-doo mxz with the 600r in it.
Fun sled with the 129 track @@rockspowersports
4 stroke turn key pause and let fuel pump energize before starting😊
Doesn’t seem to make a difference with this machine.

OUCH all out it slower then a 448 fan cooled engine.
Get it off the trail ans into some deepe snow. Get er up on one ski
Where is this ? Gorham/berlin ? Trails look pretty good 👍
Yes I road Gorham up to Pittsburg, most trails were pretty good. Over towards Colebrook were thin

Got it. Yeah, it’s a first for me as well. Great review. Now if you could put the 900 ACE motor in this chassis, it would be one nice trail sled.
Just curious what do you not like about your S4 so far? I know the ace 900 is a very smooth running engine compared to the S4.

I would do a gearing changing.. but man the gearing is like the 750 turbo. No option for to change gearing.
sounds like a sportsman!
Need to put a turbo on it for sure.☃️👍👍
I’m sure they’re working on it to compete with ski-doo’s 900Turbo
Sounds like my lawn tractor. Nice looking though.
Arkansas Wavin
Are these the rail bed trails from Gorham NH??
Yes Gorham up to Pittsburg.
Are you really riding if you get home and your jacket doesn't smell like gas?
I’ve got two of these S4 sleds. I value not smelling like oil and having a quiet ride these days. Maybe I’m getting older…
Lawn mover engine is not enough in a 400 kilo snowmobile!!
Haven’t seen a lawn mower engine push 90-100hp
@@rockspowersports It sounds like a lawn mover at least!
Dry weight shows the polaris is much heavier than the skidoo 900 ace.

Sounds like there 1000 sportsman lol 😂
I’d be willing to bet it’s the same engine.
It's the same engine, just a dry sump instead of wet sump.
What does the s in s4 stand for? Slow😂
SPEED… haha
No
I would fall to sleep on that and not taking corners because your to big for the springs
Springs barely moved when I got on it, these adventures are springed for 2 people as they come with the 2up seat from the factory.
