  • The Wallowa Mountains of eastern Oregon are spectacular -- when you can see them! Wildfire smoke from Northern California arrived right around the same time that we did, but that didn't stop us from camping at 5 Peaks RV Park right in the center of the charming town of Joseph, and exploring Wallowa Lake, Wallowa Lake State Park, Hell's Canyon National Recreation Area and more.

    It’s funny, I live in north west Oregon, and I see a buddy of mine that we logged together, god years ago and he’s in the background of the bar scene around 10:50 seconds haha. Him and his wife moved over to your neck of the woods to log, after bein here for a long time!! Good memories. I saw him laughing, and I could hear it in my head. Contagious laugh he’s got haha!

      Oh trust us Mr. M, we could see the spectacular scenery through the smoke much more effectively than we could film it. We will certainly be back some day in better conditions.

    Hey Marc,
    We were suppose to be in South Lake Tahoe this past week, but because of the big fire that was coming, we left on Monday and came home for a “staycation”.
    Lately our summers here in California have been this way; lots of fires and smoke.
    Liked your little campground, especially the privacy fences between the sites. Looked like you folks had a cozy spot.
    You know you’re in a little town when everyone parks diagonally on Main Street. That’ how the town I grew up in use to be. 🙂
    Exciting run down to Snake River. I can see making that mistake. Actually I think I have. Totally understand the music match with it, but it was the first time I ever had to turn the volume down. I guess I wasn’t in the mood. 😬
    Somehow I got the strong impression that Patricia didn’t want to be in this video. 🤔
    Thanks for sharing...
    Ram

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great to hear from you as always, Ram! It's unfortunate but true that this is how summers have turned out lately. Not just in Cali, of course, but anywhere downstream in the smoke plume. We've been steadily heading south and finally escaped it by the time we got near Vegas. It's so wonderful to see blue sky again!
      Good call on avoiding SLT, they're in a world of hurt right now. Hope you enjoyed that staycation instead. We were downstream of the spoke plume from the Caldor fire as we camped near Austin, NV this past week. We arrived last Sunday night and while things were fine on arrival, we awoke Monday morning to the smell of a campfire...but not from a campfire. Dale and Pat bailed in the morning for SLC. By the time I was done with work we too packed up and headed south to Pahrump. It was that intense. Not what we planned on, but like your staycation sometimes you have to just roll with the punches.
      And what ever gave you that idea about Patricia's desire to be filmed? 😂

    We spent 3 weeks tooling around Eastern Oregon last October...Wallowa Mts area was just one of our many stops. It was smoke free that first, and only day. That 1st day, I think it was a Wednesday, we checked out Joseph. All the street trees were in their beautiful Fall glory. It was so breathtaking! However you couldn't spend your tourist dollars there. 90% of the shops and restaurants were closed up tight. I'm guessing covid and mid-week resting for the shop owners?
    After 2 full nights/3 days, and not being able to see the Wallowas we left for the Eastside area around Mt Rainier. Clean air and rain! Yipee!
    Hoping you can get some clean air soon, as traveling the West in the summer is now not so much fun.
    Ps: I have one thing to say about that drive down to Hells Canyon. Hell no!

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great to hear from you Julie, thanks for sharing that. Like you, we arrived during reasonably clear air so we could see the area's beauty. Unfortunately, having just arrived we didn't capture that on camera.
      We're pretty certain it was Covid in your case, for the town was hopping all week during our stay, even midweek. We're still in the smoke (this episode was filmed several weeks ago), but as we work our way through Nevada north to south over these next couple of weeks we should finally be out of it.

    We drove to Joseph for the day last summer, maybe 6 weeks before the summer's California's fire filled the west coast with smoke, a lovely little town indeed. Another thing we did do along the American Scenic Byway 200+ mile loop was camp on Snake River Canyon pullout NE of Baker City for 3 nights. Great location, but with a couple mid to heavy nights of wind, so worth it though just for the location, even had fairly good cell, maybe not enough for work. Sorry that you guys ran into smoke, it seems to be an almost every year occurrence now days. Thanks for another excellent informational, entertaining video, that tells us so much more about an area than most of us find on our own.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the tip Dirk! And thanks as well for your kind words. You've given us yet another place to explore the next time we wander up that way. And indeed, it's a shame but true that these days late summer anywhere in the northwestern quadrant of the US is almost guaranteed to have smoke to dodge.

      Thank you Marv! We always try to match the mood of the soundtrack to the mood of the video segment. We also caught a glimpse of what the area truly looks like on the evening we arrived in Joseph, which gives us more than enough motivation to return. That evening just never made it on camera.

    10:30 Lol your wife really does not want to be on camera. Puts on sun glasses indoors, then hood of the coat and turns away. Can't see me, can't see me.
    13:50 Wow those mountains. Can't wait for you to come back to it when it is not smoky. It looks absolutely epic even shrouded with the smoke fire. Thankfully this year has been more forgiving to travelers as forest fires were not as expansive as it was in 2020. When I left Moab everything was coated with smoke because of that 9000 acre fire behind Moab in Lasal moountains and then again in Silverton it sort of came and went a few times but I was spared. For those traveling cross country to see those spots... weather and environmental conditions are certainly a concern.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's definitely the case each summer; this year, though, it came much earlier than normal. Yep, Mrs. GA is intensely private online; she gets pretty defensive about being caught on camera. 😄 And we'll definitely be back to the Wallowas. They far exceeded our expectations. We were fortunate to catch a glimpse of them relatively smoke-free on the afternoon of our arrival and we were blown away; unfortunately we were relaxing and didn't break out the cameras. Had we only known the transformation that would take place the following day.

    Sorry the smoke took away some of the beauty of the area for your visit. My wife and I had a trip like that to Acadia but it was fog. We called it our 'probably' trip. Everything was 'probably' beautiful, but we couldn't see anything! I take it the shy one at lunch (10:16) is Mrs. Grand Adventure? My wife would have made me edit that out! 😂😂Thanks for the videos Marc.

      Thank you for watching, Peter! Yep, that's Mrs. Camera Shy. I usually try to shoot around her, but when she's sitting in a shot or walks into it I can blame it on her. 😄
      Acadia can definitely be that way. So too along the Pacific Coast where the persistent marine layer can stay put throughout much of the day.

  • @gorrdd
    @gorrdd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks Marc,
    I thoroughly enjoyed it regardless of the smoke. You actually had a few days where it cleared out. Some days more than others. So it wasn't a complete wash by any means.
    The town was great, as well as the RV park you stayed at. Loved the color and lighting in those images...
    Some of the lighting was interesting because of the smoke. Some of the lighter smoke days had that effect where the sun casts a slightly yellow hue from the sun sneaking through. I remember that from skiing in partly snowy partly sunny days. I know you know what I'm talking about. It changes the whole mood of skiing.
    Other shots that showed partly obscured mountains had a kind of mysterious look to them providing that the foreground and midground was mostly clear and visible.
    Sometimes increased particulate can do interning things with the light in images. However, that's mostly at sunset hours providing there isn't too much particulate. You will sometimes get some great orange sunsets. The best are sunsets reflecting off lakes from the far side of the lake, facing the sunset.
    Gord

      All very true, Gord. Thanks so much, glad that you enjoyed it! Coincidentally we're presently in the very situation described in your last paragraph, camping on the east side of a lake and watching the sun set across the water. With the smoke it's positively spectacular.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That road was definitely exhilarating, Rabbi, to say the least.
      The best crossover tire that I've ever owned is the Mickey Thompson Baja ATZ. I had a set on the Tundra, and on my previous Tacoma, too. They're exceptional off-road, reasonably quiet on the highway, and load range E for towing, too. They've carried us along the White Rim and to Top of the World in Moab, and even up, over and down the massive sand dunes at Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area along the coast without any issue. The only problem is that they're hideously expensive, so when I had to replace them last fall, knowing that I was only keeping the Tundra for a while longer I went with the Nitto Grappler 2 instead to save about half.
      One crossover tire that everyone seems to have, but which I absolutely hated was the Goodyear Wrangler AT. Their off-road performance is only "meh," and they're horribly loud on the highway. They were on my Tundra when I bought it, and I couldn't wait to get them off.

    Hi Marc and Patricia! I hope all is going well! Thank you very much for sharing another awesome spot!! Yes...the smoke is very unfortunate. But, I am pro fire for the woods; just not half of the woods at once.
    Holy smokes...that pizza looked great! And, what a great opportunity to stock up with the adult beverages at the distillery.
    You are welcome to return to Leadville now! The temps are finally at like 71 and lower for the highs and 30s for the lows.
    Think of all of the liaisons you could make with a unicorn floatie!! You two would be WAY popular.
    This area was our back up plan to purchase an Outdoors RV as they are made in La Grande; just to the west of you. But, our "local" ORV dealer in Poncha Springs CO had build slots that we could reserve (ETA- End of Sept!).
    Safe travels!!

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great to hear from you Alan! We too are "pro-fire" in that they're necessary for a healthy forest ecosystem; it just sucks being downwind, especially when half of the western US is downwind this year and it takes us some time to escape the plume. We also wish that we (as a people) did a better job of managing the forest fuels. But another 2 weeks and we should finally be in a part of the country that's not downwind.
      The weather's sounding pretty sweet in the Leadville area right now, but we finally have a purposeful direction for the rest of the season, and need to march deliberately in that direction to finish this season on schedule.
      Only a month away to that new RV! We'll bet you're getting antsy.

      @@GrandAdventure Yes, that's what I heard and saw from Yuan Brown's Blancolirio channel, this morning. It's completely covered up all the way up into the Hudson Bay and Northwest Passage area, based upon the prevailing jetstream.
      Down here in Texas we are completely out of that jet stream loop. Day before yesterday we had one of those very rare low particulate days where the quality of light at sunset was magical.
      Usually the humidity and particulate accounts for allot of haze throughout August. But not this year. We should have a beautiful autumn this year down here.
      It's still pretty warm with highs in the mid nineties. But that will change after the first week in September. Highs will be in the mid eighties by then... and slipping into the high seventies by October.

      @@GrandAdventure Roger that, Marc. We've had rain off and on most of the summer so everything down here is still very green... looks like spring actually. Usually August is totally burnt out with fire bans everywhere. Not this year. At least not northern Texas...
      October looks like it will have some rain down here... maybe six or seven days of scattered and intermittent shows in various places. Totally doable and will keep the temps very comfortable.
      Your experience will likely be very different from before. It won't be the usual autumn Texas brownie. Should be quite green still with some leaves turning.
      Leave don't really start turning here until around November. Some trees and bushes lose their leaves as early as late August. Others go in September and October. But the main event is in November. But nothing like the northeast.
      Plan your visit and leave some flexibility. The West Texas panhandle might be quite green this year in the highlands and mountains.

Wuh-low-whu (low as in allow). Its insulting to go somewhere and mutilate the beauty and history of a location and their historic names.
    Wallowa was part of the Nez Perce Indian tribe and home, led by the tribe chief, Joseph. Wallowa translated from the Nez Perce language, is "land of winding waters". Wallowa County is Chief Joseph Country, indelibly associated with a great Native American leader. Thus the celebration of Chief Joseph days in Wallowa county. Do better!! Learn and pronounce it correctly out of respect!!
