    Your images are clearly your preferred style, and moody really suits them, I do like the retro Americana feel and your choice of subjects.
    I’ve been a professional photographer for more than forty years, and enjoy your take on things. I go out shooting at night in London, so I really get what your about, as you say, sometimes it’s what you don’t see. Look forward to more, so thanks for showing us your world !
    Cheers, Gary

    Colour me inspired. I found a source in the UK where bulk rolls are cheaper than Fomapan. I have used the film before but can now play toy hearts content. My photographic society have a club night on Thurs where we will be judging each others prints! Sounds like a perfect night for my MX, 35mm f2 and some 400s. Thanks again for an inspirational video

    Nice photos. Great, that you try to find your way to shoot film, to create your own style.
    Your photos remind me my kind experiment with Konica C35 EF last weekend. I used alkaline battery 1.5v instead of Mercury cells 1.35v, Ilord HP5+, iso set to 100 (to compensate voltage), D74 developer. Photos come very dark, with very high contrast. But again, I like it. HP5+ never, ever come so contrasty like this time before (even pushed to ISO 1600). Think to try again, push HP+ to 800 and develop as 400.

    Your pictures are gorgeous and they're moody no question. The thing I miss is a little more light here and there. I don't mean brighter pictures I like the mistery too but I like it when the light has a little more power like when you shot Acros. Great stuff anyway man so thank you!

    • @TedVieira
      @TedVieira  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much, man. Yeah, I know what you mean. I tend to embrace a lot of shadowing and watching that detail just go away. I love that kind of look, but it definitely can be a little heavy and not for everyone. Thankfully. Yeah, I don't think I'd be happy using it all the time. Like you said about ACROS; yeah, that film gives me mood, but a little more flexibility that I can always tweak later if needed; and in such a beautiful aesthetic. Thank you so much, man.

    I don't shoot a lot of fast film or push often which is part of the reason I gave my roll of rollei to you. I knew you'd make the most of it. I do like very contrasty black and white though so I may give pushing Tri-X or my last couple rolls of agfa apx 400, see how they turn out. Thanks for the 'push' in that direction! 😁

    • @TedVieira
      @TedVieira  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I still need to take the Holga back out for a walk. Yeah, give Tri-X a try. Such versatile film. I hear from time to time from photographers who just think Tri-X already has too much contrast, and I get that, but I like it. I'd end up adding the contrast if it wasn't there anyway. :)

    Cool. All great photos but I really like the ones of the Porsche cars. It's impossible to say as screen and actual prints are very different but the tones and inky blacks sort of remind me of old Agfa 400 film I used in the late 70s / early 80s. I think it was called AgfaPan 400 - but don't quote me! I must get a couple of rolls of the Rollei 400 and give it a go. Great incentive to get out and shoot some moody night stuff.

    Phantastic pictures of the cars.
    Good entertainment here. I think even a bad "judgement" of a film or what else will sound positiv on your channel, you often use the word "yeah" ;-)
    I will give this film a chance and order 3 Rolls. If I need to push? I will see. Is more for making pics inside or in low light. I always are "on the road" with a 500 cm and a tripod.
    Thanks

    Very nice. You nailed the developing. HC110 is great stuff. I'll stick to TriX, it just works. I'm sick of trying to find a Acros replacement.

    • @TedVieira
      @TedVieira  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, man! Yeah, I'm really comfortable with HC-110 and what I can do with it. At this point I'm still leaning on Tri-X as my goto film. It's fun to keep trying different film from time to time to mix things up. But usually when the dust settles I'm back with Tri-X. I am really looking forward to shooting with Fuji's new emulsion for ACROS. Very excited about that. Thanks again!

    But then I saw it was only available as 360 low quality.

    So I stopped watching it and now it's 5 PM it's available at HD 1080
    Man they are great, indeed the waterdrop on the Chevelle are super.
    Love that dark contrast look, but it all depends on what you are shooting.
    And I agree it should add to a portfolio, but not all the time.

      Hey Rob, thank you so much for the input on the video quality. Man, yeah, I need to see what I can do about making sure that 1080 is available before I even publish it. Maybe I'll just upload a day early and let it sit on the server for a while before publishing it after it's been processed. Hopefully that can help, 'cuase yeah, it doesn't look so good right out of the gate. I'm not the most video-savvy cat out there but hopefully I'll be able to improve upon this.

  • @Raychristofer
    @Raychristofer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    What's up big brother Ted? Man those are some deep blacks, I have to say I give you credit for shooting at 1/8 of a second I've never had the guts to try that even with a stabilized lens. Not to mention moving out at 3 in the morning LOL you're a beast. Let me ask you something if you had a strong low-light camera like a Sony a7s would you shoot that instead in these situations or is it the challenge and character of the film that you are ultimately looking for? Sometimes I shoot so much film myself I wonder it's some of those images would have come out better on digital especially if it's a color scan that I'm having trouble white balancing

    • @TedVieira
      @TedVieira  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey man, thank you so much! Yeah, you know, man; I shoot with these cameras and on film because I prefer that lack of low-light image quality. I don't necessarily want a clean image with a lot of shadow detail. I want the shadows to run deep; to loos that detail, not all, but for the most part; and let that help simplify the image, letting the viewer's eyes easily become drawn to the items that are selectively lit; creating a stronger sense of story; at least to me. (man, what a huge run-on sentence - very sorry about that, man. Hope it made sense)
      Almost all (if not all) of the digital gear these days is amazing at working in low light conditions. That is so cool! But yeah, that's not really what I'm looking for. I kind of love the limitations and the look of film; and the character, mood and feel that it adds to the image.... without hardly any work in post. Color could be a different story. The only time I shoot color is for clients and for family... and it's not stuff that gets too moody. So maybe for color, a newer digital option would work better for me on rare occasions where I want color.
      How about for you? Thank you again, so much.

      I just developed my second roll of Lomo Potsdam 100 ISO. whats strange is when Im adjusting the curves my final edit is never a normal S curve like other films. makes me realize this film emulsion behaves differently. Im working on a review of the Lomo digitaliza scanning mask that clamps the negative flat between magnets helping to hold it flatter for scanning and allowing the sprocket holes to be exposed. Ill have that up in a few weeks if youre interested. have a good evening.

    • @TedVieira
      @TedVieira  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much, man! Yeah, probably wouldn't have been a huge difference at 400. It was nice to see that I could easily push the film 2 stops and really not see that much difference in the look of the film. Yeah, it did bump the contrast, grain and mood, just a bit, depending on the quality of life. But honestly, both at 400 and 1600 it seems to deliver the same character, it's own unique aesthetic. Thanks man.

    • @ZommBleed
      @ZommBleed 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ted Vieira I guess I was thinking pushing it rendered it a little darker. I like the punch the darks have and the deep contrast. At least that's how it looks on the 'Tube.

  • @REFIGUY69
    @REFIGUY69 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Ted, the car shots were slick. Who aint a sucker for retro BW shots of old cars , right? The bike shot on the street, didnt quite have that tight grain slickness, more grain and a bit flat. And then the bathroom urinals that tight grain oozing slickness was back. So I'm thinking not so good for errant night street photography but great w indoor lighting ? Not sure what kind of indoor lighting, Tungsten?

    • @TedVieira
      @TedVieira  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man, thanks so much. Yeah, you're right. The finish on these amazing automobiles was almost like glass. I probably could've gotten similarly eye-catching shots with just about any film. I do like the grain structure and tones that this film did add though. And yeah, I tend to like it more in high-contrast situations. It can be cool and moody in low-contrast scenes, but I do love the punch that it gives with that extra contrast in the shot. Cool stuff. I did do a photo shoot with it. Natural light and unfortunately not a lot of it. Pretty low contrast shots. While I was happy with this particular set of images and project, I think it the future I would work more to get (yes) a little more light and better contrast. I'll show some of those shots in next week's video. Fun stuff! :)

    I've been wanting to try various Rollei films (RPX 20 for instance in addition to 400. Their 400 IR film is nice too - might be worth a shot (don't need to shoot IR with it - it's a fine normal film as well). T-Max 400 can look moody in the right places too. I want to push it as well but haven't had a chance just yet. HP5 has generally been my go-to for pushing. But ooooh man so excited about Acros II!
    Back to the mood, since I use a conventional darkroom still, curious - how is the negative density in your 1600 shots? I've been testing HR50 and found it's easier to loose shadow detail in the darkroom versus scanning it (without having to dodge and burn anyway). Still trying to find the right times for my development (I use XTOL replenishment in a DIY rotary I made so I usually have to dial in my times compared to listed times).

      @TedVieira  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Tim, yeah man, I like the look of the RPX line as well. Rollei puts out some beautiful film. I'm still doing the hybrid version of developing the film in a Paterson tank, then scanning the negatives. For now, that process is pretty perfect for me and how I work. But... man, I was lucky enough to have someone give an enlarger and everything necessary (except the lens) to start doing darkroom prints. I've had everything setup in a bathroom for about 6 months now, but one thing I can be great at is procrastination. No exception here. I do look forward to doing it one of these days. I'll be more informed to talk about that difference between the results from those two processes. Thanks again, Tim!

    • @TedVieira
      @TedVieira  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much, man. Yeah, I definitely tend to lean towards film for my passion. But digital is another fantastic tools that allows me to do other things. For the most part, I approach each very differently as far as what I'm looking for. If I'm shooting film, it's because I want that film look. And not that I get that from film, when I shoot digital I want the kinds of things I can get from that side of photography. If I'm shooting digital, I want that contemporary look. That doesn't mean I won't, at times, attempt to edit the digital shots to look like film; add digital grain, etc.... but if I want that look I'll just shoot film. Okay, rambling too much here. Anyway, hope that gives more of an insight into what I’m going for. Thanks again.

    Hey Ted, I picked up some Rollei Retro 400s today in 120, and I have a question. Inside the box are recommended developing times for different developers. I will be using HC110 B (1 + 31) and the time at 20C is 10 minutes. Whereas, the Massive Dev Chart suggests 6.5 minutes at same dilution/temp. I will be shooting the film at box speed and I know you pushed to 1600, but... any thoughts on this? I think I am inclined to use what Rollei recommends. BTW, also picked up some ADOX Silvermax 100 in 35mm. Looking forward to checking out these two films then watching your videos again.

    • @TedVieira
      @TedVieira  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Chris, I went with the Massive Dev Chart recommendation. I used HC-110 (b) 68°F/20°C for 6:30 for box speed, 400. And 16:00 for when I pushed it to 1600. The time for 1600 was an experiment on my part as I couldn't find any data out there about pushing this film to 1600 and developing with HC-110. 16 minutes worked out great (luckily!) Have fun, man!

    I'd better not show your pictures of that Porsche 356 Speedster to my dad or it would probably make him cry. He had two of those beauties, one in white and the second in red, but the bodies rusted out from the bottom in certain models as Porsche had contracted with a third party to produce the undercarriage. He sold it for around $400 back in the 70s to a neighbor, who put it up on blocks and eventually moved away. Checking prices now, completely rusted out samples have sold for over $100K, and mint ones are going for upwards of half a million!

    • @TedVieira

      Hey man, thank you very much. For the most part, I just trusted the meter on the M6. It's a center weighted meter and sometimes I'll make different decisions just because I've gotten to know the M6 and how it meters, and I'll know when I'm going for something different. But for the most part, the meter on the M6 gives me the right information. Thanks again, man!

  • @kiddeq

    • @TedVieira
      @TedVieira  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Paul, thank you very much, man. You know, when I'm shooting in daylight or other "normal" conditions, I'm comfortable with sunny16 and just having experience in certain situations. In stuff like this, shooting at night sometimes with hardly any light (like that "car show" - I was really expecting more light there) I am happy to rely on the center weighted light meter on my M6. I've worked with it doing this kind of stuff for about three years now and know how to work with it to (usually) get what I want. One thing I like about an M6 mounted with a Summicron 35, although it's a small camera it has some weight to it. That really helps a lot in making shots hand held at 1/8sec. I don't always nail those, but most of the time. The form of the M6 and the weight really helps a lot. Thanks again, Paul!

    would you say its smoother than tri-x as far as grain structure?

    • @TedVieira
      @TedVieira  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Jose, it's just different. The grain structure (rollei) is pretty thick and visible, especially in scenes with less contrast. Add good contrast and I love it a little more. Tri-X can have plenty of grain as well, but it does feel a little more course to me. But I see less grain with Tri-X, especially with good light and contrast. I do love the Rollei film and will definitely pull it in for certain projects, but I'm really looking at Tri-X as my goto 400 speed film these days. It's got a classic look you just can't go wrong with... unless you don't care for Tri-X. I know many who say it's just too contrasty and many prefer HP5+, and I get that. But for me I love that extra bump in contrast that Tri-X delivers. Sorry man, seems like I'm all over the place here.
      As to your original question, Rollei's film does have this interesting smooth quality because the grain looks so tightly structured to me. That's my impression. Does it look smoother that Tri-X... it's just different. I see more grain with Rollie, but it is a tighter structure. Just different. Thanks Jose.
