    Hi, nice video about 1 of my favourite camouflage pattern. That date stamp is in fact 61 they were issued only in early 60's a served for about 10 years (than were completely replaced by the "raindrop or needle" pattern). Than they were send as military aid in to middle east, Arfrica and Cuba and places like that and that is pobbably the reason why there is that english stamp and also the reason why are they kind of hard to find even here in Czech Republic. There were 2 styles of blouses with and without the hood, long coat called "kongo" (as the one i the video), hoods, pants, caps a i have also seen a life preserver for engineer troops.

    1) In fact the vz60 is surprisingly effective even for European nature! The main idea/concept of this camo is not to 'blend in' by using colors matching the background! But to camouflage by breaking the shapes DUE TO its contrasting colors and large pattern shapes. The supposed trick is to fool eyes/mind by perceiving 'bits', but not to 'connect the dots'(observer realizing the 'bits' sum up to a shape of a person). And in fact it really works well!
    (As an extreme example of this concept, think of zebra in Africa and its 'camouflage' in contrasting white and black stripes. It does not 'blend with environment' at all. But the shape-breaking effect actually works as effective camouflage)
    2) This vz60 Mlok(salamander) pattern was actually intended for all units of Czechoslovak army, not some specialized pattern for paratroopers
    3) Very soon (year or two) after these uniforms started to be issued, the central European Warsaw pact members agreed on same style of the uniform camo patters- the 'rain pattern': Poland, East Germany and Czechoslovakia. So new 'rain pattern' uniforms started to be issued in 1962. That meant Vz60 Salamander uniforms started to be replaced by new uniforms.
    4) Due to its relatively short use, there is few pictures of troops in these uniforms available- however, one well known set is from some sort of parade of airborne troops in their home town. That led to wrong conclusions regarding this camo/uniform being specialized paratrooper camo
    5) The reason why so many of these uniforms ended up in the third world is exactly the fact that it was introduced to CS army, and than immediately replaced by new uniform standard. So they were sold or given for free to all those communist-aligned countries in the third world

    That chest strap is for ranks placement

  • @continentalmilitaria

    The front loop on the breast is for pining the rank pips or stars. The date is 1961 not 1981. The piece is called the "Kongo" that is an odd name given the fact it is a winter trench coat type garment. The term "Kongo" is given to all the winter garments of this cut as well like the ones in the Vz60 and Vz95 pattern. As someone else mentioned the English stamp is from surplus wholesalers for export reasons.

    @A.M317 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    As far as I know the 100% cotton stamp was added before exportation most likely by the surplus-wholesaler. Miltec/ Sturm also did that on some surplus stuff. Regards from Austria.

    Great video, Mike. I just found one of these in a street market here in Mexico City under a pile of ladies blouses. Not sure how it got here, but cool to have it as part of my collection. Always appreciating your videos, as they inspire my own. Thanks for all your efforts.

    Largish Blotch works great at Distance to Break-up the Human form. Intricate small patterns work good at very close distance, but melds into an obvious human form at Distance.

    Nice markings. There's a manufacturer's mark: Kras Brno (czech clothing company). I'm sure the year of manifacture is 1961, cuz' Kras wasn't making camo in the 80s, manufacturer Michalovice took the job. Also, salamander camo wasn't produced in the 80s anymore.I know that our products (also army goods) were exported to the western market, and to countries, which Soviet Union could possibly win over (Syria, Lebanon...), that could be explaining the english marks.

    The thick strap/loop on the right side of chest is for ranks and you can also clip the My Day flashlight on it so you don't have to hold it. Those smaller loopa on shoulders were used for the Y-harness for the soldier's battle belt. When you run those harness straps trough it they can't slip away and will always hold their place.
