  • Former UFC champion Ronda Rousey lost her title this weekend to Australian fighter Holly Holm. Now the internet is taking Rousey to task because she trash talked so heavily before the match, saying that she would crush Holm. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian (The Point) hosts of The Young Turks discuss.
    Do you think Rousey deserves the criticism she is getting? Will her reputation recover after this match? Let us know in the comments below.

    “Lady Gaga is not tapping out of her most recent social media dig.
    Ronda Rousey, the former Ultimate Fighting Championship women's bantamweight champion, ended her 12-fight winning streak on Saturday when she was defeated by Holly Holm at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, Australia.
    The epic upset caused a stir on the Internet following the match. Gaga was just one of the many celebrities and fans who took to social media to weigh in on Rousey's first MMA loss.
    The singer-turned-actress posted a photo of Holm knocking out Rousey on Instagram on Saturday, captioning it, "THATS WHAT YOU GET FOR NOT TOUCHING GLOVES!"

      +fizman22 Floyd...I truly dislike. He isn't for the sport, but for the obvious, as it's in his name: money. All it is, is pure business. People like Tyson and Ali made it bigger than just themselves and they were for the sport. They did not try to run around like it's a track race.

      I'm not blaming, but Ali will forever remain a better fighter than Mayweather and I just hoped that Rousey didn't go the same route. Still, you're right. I'm seeing posts about "even at my loss, do you still like me?" I'm overall just in it for the sport and entertainment, not some civil injustice that others are making it out to be, haha. "Pray for Ronda!" All I can say is, seriously?

      +Almighty O.G. -- Yeah, but I still think she would beat Mayweather. Any boxer with no MMA training is likely to lose against even an average MMA fighter. Unlike Mayweather, Holly Holm has years training in MMA and learning how to defend against takedowns. In fact, she even took Rousey to the floor once in this fight but was smart enough to get back up on her feet fast. In a Mayweather-Rousey fight, Mayweather would get one chance to knock her out. If he lands his punch, Rousey is out like a light. If he misses, then he's getting wrapped up like a pretzel and submitting in seconds. There really would be no in between.

    • @dookdawg214
      @dookdawg214 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Plant Based Analyst First of all, she tried to swing at her. And that's my whole point -- she shouldn't try to box with people who are good at boxing. So thank you for helping me make my argument. Secondly, by then she was pretty exhausted. Her fights never last that long -- she simply didn't have the wind to keep going. If you ever watch skilled ground fighters vs. boxers without MMA experience, the takedowns are usually seamless. The other tricky thing is that Holm is a great kicker, which makes takedowns even harder. Mayweather wouldn't be a threat with his feet, so the takedown would be pretty easy. All Rousey would need to do is avoid that one brutal punch. If she's fresh on her feet and going for the takedown early, she'd be able to pull it off. And in any case, one thing is 100% certain... if she did get into a grappling situation with Mayweather, she would beat him very, very quickly. If you disagree with that, then you know absolutely nothing about combat.

    Touching gloves is a universal sign of respect. Talking outside of the fight is about the person, touching gloves is respect to the fighter and Ronda didn't respect the fighter Holly Holm or her abilities. It is the equivalent of getting spat on.

  • @prophet8625
    @prophet8625 8 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    The bigger issue here is that Rousey was talking shit saying she could beat a man and even said she would beat Floyd Mayweather (a male boxer who is bigger than her and has never lost in 49 fights), but as soon as she steps in with a former female 2 time boxing world champion she gets knocked out in 2 rounds. And in boxing Holly Holm was considered to be featherfisted who couldn't punch herself out of a wet paperbag. And Ronda was saying she could KO a male fighter who has defeated knockout monsters like Marcos Maidana who had 31 knockouts in 33 fights? Come on feminists, you were the ones hyping that crap up.

He is not getting out of that and would have zero clue what to do. Holly did a lottt of research and training to counter Ronda's ground game, she got very lucky in one situation too, always tuck the arm in, not around her waist.

      That's a great question and one that they sought to answer in this segment. They are perfectly within their rights to initiate a discussion that question without being called retarded for it. What's so retarded about examining the complex relationship between violence and entertainment in relevance to the human mind?
      Your angle on this is that you're trying to defend MMA when no one is even attacking it. They're discussing the paradoxical nature a lot of people have that they hate violence but nonetheless can't look away when it's displayed as entertainment.

      +Echo TheEcho Isn't it! She claims she found nude photos he'd taken of her without her knowledge so when she went to confront him before he could even explain she slapped him so hard her hand hurt. Then she claims he was blocking the door way after she hit him still trying to explain himself, she told him to move and when he didn't she again punched him in the face, choked him, grabbed him by his hoodie, kneed him in the face, them tossed him aside on the kitchen floor.
      Granted, if he really did take pictures of her without her knowledge then he was a creep but that definitely doesn't justify what she did to him. Also if it roles were reversed and it was a male athlete that told the exact same story in his autobiography, he would get BLASTED by the media (and rightfully so) but for some reason Ronda gets a pass.

    The thing is guys, there is a difference between trash talking and disrespect. The trash talk before the fight is almost to be expected and helps promote the fight, but when your opponent offers up a sign of respect such as touching gloves and you refuse then it crosses that line and is genuinely disrespectful and that's what people didn't like even though on the surface it might seem ridiculous that people object to that but not the trash talk.

    • @1AvrgJoe
      @1AvrgJoe 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Great assessment of Ronda's behavior. She's a terrible winner and loser. Trash talking is absolutely part of the sport, fighters hype the match in media and I guarantee Dana White loves it. But Ronda is disrespectful and arrogant. These people are your co-workers after all, you can fight w/out being a total asshole which is what she is IMO. UFC legends are all respectful guys. Hughes, Penn, GSP, Cain, Silva, all give respect that's due to their great opponents.

It's possible that Dana White put pressure on her to run her mouth, but they don't all talk shit like that. Many fighters are very modest and sportsmanlike. There's no reason not to be. +yoshi542 James Toney was damn near 45 years old and incredibly out of shape, not to mention had zero UFC experience. Obviously a boxer needs some MMA experience to be competitive but watch the Holm Rousey fight, she boxed the shit out of Rousey badly

    • @yoshi542
      @yoshi542 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      joesaiditstrue And would it matter if Holly was a great kickboxer who never boxed? Like say Joanna is? It would probably have resulted in a similar outcome since it's how each fighter adapts and implements their gameplans to the best of their ability. Just because her base was boxing that suddenly means boxing was the best for MMA? Of course not. Holly's been training MMA and fought in kickboxing for many years, hell she's been training with Mike Winklejohn for over 14 years (probably longer). Fact is, Holly is a legit striker, although she is a legit boxer. If she went a different path and went purely for kickboxing instead of boxing in the 2000's, she probably would have been as successful before making the jump to MMA.
      So don't make the claim just because a skilled striker who did very well in boxing beat an overrated and seemingly intimdating judoka standing up that boxing is best. This is mixed martial arts, it was the headkick that finished Ronda, but the distance control, patience, and accurate punches help set it up.

    In boxing if you don't touch gloves the fight won't happen.
    The fighters MUST follow the instruction of the ref. If the fighters won't take instruction from the ref during the fight the fighters are put in very serious danger. When they are in the ring, the ref is in charge. If he tells you to touch gloves and you won't you'd get a DQ loss.

      In MMA you are free to touch or not touch. The ref usually says "If you want to touch gloves do it now." Not touching gloves in MMA is not unusual if there is bad blood between the fighters, what was strange though is that it seemed like Ronda had conjured up this bad blood all on her own and was the only one privy to it. Up until the weigh ins the day before the fight she had nothing but nice things to say about Holly and then she just lost it for some reason.

You have large swathes of this country, who profess to be Christian conservatives, who harp on the evils of pornography, the legalization of same sex marriage and sexually related content on TV, and yet these same people have no problem having their entire families watch and participate in sports that do irreparable damage to people's bodies - sports like boxing, MMA, and football. Why don't self-professing Christian conservatives abhor such acts of violent entertainment more than sexual acts, because they do far more damage than consenting adults having sex? If this is not proof that religion misplaces people's priorities I don't know what does.

    Violence is and will always be apart of the human experience. It's why Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Dexter, and other popular shows do so well. Violence and comedy are the highest grossing forms of entertainment outside of music. Do I feel bad about it though? Not at all. These people train, prepare, and choose to be apart of this and get paid for it. When they tap into our vices and put it on TV I can't really feel bad for it.

    I hate when people point out the fact that ufc fighters always jump on top of their downed opponents. Everyone points out how violent it is. it is much better than making Ronda get back up and fight her again. the ref calls it when one person obviously has the upper hand. when fighting mma or ufc fights you are taught to keep fighting until you are told to stop or the person taps out. that is just how it is. it is actually much safer for both people.
    1. (in self defense) you are ensuring your opponent will stay down.
    2. the other person won't get back up and keep fighting possibly causing more harm to themselves.

    Honestly MMA isint even violent to me, its not like watching someone get shot in the face or murdered with an axe, that would be violent. They are just fighting.

      It's a scale.. sure there's more violent things, like someone falling into a giant meat grinder.. but it's still violence.. just less violent to you.

      +Siberius Wolf Hardly anything is violent if you grow up desensitized to it. If you saw a commercial on TV where a female is using the shampoo advertised and you could see her tits your eyes would pop out because you're American and you arent used to it. But in France thats completely normal. Same thing with violence. In America, we're spoon fed violence since birth and thats why we have no problem invading countries like Iraq that havent even attacked us.

    I guess you don't understand MMA. When you knock someone down, even if they are knocked out, you keep pounding the opponent until the referee pulls you off.
