    Are you plating over the cut? There's a company in Wisconsin that stretches and adds a third axle, they don't use slant cuts on semi truck frames. They say it is not as good as the horizontal L cut. Maybe it's different when adding the pusher axle opposed to just a frame stretch. Good video and good torch work.

      Thanks! Yes I plated over the diagonal cuts. I used 3/8 plate with 6, 5/8 bolts with three bolts going through on each side of the weld. I guess it really depends on what the truck is being used for. I liked the diagonal cut technique but every way seems like it would work. I dont plan on putting more than 8k lbs on the bed.

      every splice we've ever done is a angle cut..because it allows for more weld, weld penetration. we also sleeve the inside with a custom formed channel sleeve. its always 3'longer than either side of the weld. and bolted in every 8" with a 3/4" fine thread bolt.

    Amazing job.. I have a fire truck that I am doing the same thing to. I was wondering how long was your wheelbase when you were done? And did you just do a center driveshaft to eliminate the pump case? I think you did a great job with the whole thing.

      To do the whole truck build or stretch a frame? I'm not too sure what the going rate is. I'm sure other shops would charge by the hour.

    Why not a Continuous bead

    • @GalerieGarage
      @GalerieGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you try to do a continuous bead, it will blow through the metal and drip or get too hot. You never want to weld down, you don't create enough heat to get the penitration for a good weld. It looks pretty on a down bead but is not that strong. You go nice and easy upward while keeping the metal hot, creates great penitration. Do the same for each side. The top and bottom of the frame rail you can do a continuous bead as long as you get the right penitration. 220 welder stick or mig welding reccomended.

      @@GalerieGarage you need to learn a bit more about welding young man. Super stoked to see your attack it attitude!!! If your burning through you amps and wire speed are too high for your travel speed. turn your amps as far down as you can, as well as your wire speed, so that you still have a nice burn then work left to right pausing slightly as you change direction. The way you are doing it you are causing cold lap even more so than if you turned your amps way up and traveled down hill. I presume you're using hard wire so if you get "bubbles" please grind them out, that weld has no strength with the bubbles, it's like swiss cheese. I have been a CWI (certified welding inspector) and have 30 years of welding experience please don't take this as criticism, I,m just trying to help. Keep on trucking!!!

    • @arthurk4265
      @arthurk4265 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great reply Travis. Do you suggest welding down then a continuous bead (with the lower amps and wire speed)? For 3/8 frame, bevel and weld from one side or both? If one side, single or dual pass? Ive read stick is better for this, 7018 rod I brlieve, is that true?
