  • NOTE: This is a Death Penalty Case.
Donald Hartung, 63, stands trial in Escambia County, Florida for allegedly killing his mother Voncile Smith, 77, and his half-brothers John William Smith, 49, and Richard Thomas Smith, 47. He faces three counts of first-degree premeditated murder. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
Escambia County deputies say the crimes happened July 28, 2015, according to an amended arrest report obtained by Law&Crime. Richard Smith, an employee of the Department of Homeland Security, had no-showed worked for a few days, so on deputies checked up on him on July 31. They found no sign of forced entry, but were able to enter through the back with the help of firefighters, and found the three victims dead throughout the home. Each person was under “large piles of clothes,” deputies said.
Richard Smith had been shot around his right ear, and had a stab wound to the throat, deputies said. He was found face down in the TV room at the foot of the TV, investigators said. Authorities said he was wearing the same clothes he’d been wearing when pictured leaving work at 6:36 p.m. on July 28.
John Smith was found in a sofa on front of a TV. He sustained blunt force trauma to the top of his head, and received a stab wound to the neck, authorities said.
As for their mother, she sustained blunt force trauma to the top of her head and received a stab wound to the neck. Authorities said she’d been dragged from a chair into John’s bedroom.
According to deputies, Hartung was at the house on the 28th to cook dinner, as usual. He left between 5:30 p.m. and 6:00 pm, he allegedly said, but he denied seeing his brother Richard. A neighbor, however, claimed to see Richard arrive at the residence before Hartung left, investigators said. This witness was not sure of the time, but said it was just before dark because the lights on Hartung’s car was not on, authorities said.
Another witness-who was a co-worker’s of Hartung-said that he previously had a conversation with the defendant. In it, the alleged killer said that if anything happened to Voncile Smith, then he would inherit all of her property because he was the oldest son. The mom’s attorney, however, said that she’d kept him out of the will, deputies said. Hartung would’ve been the “potential sole heir” to his family’s estate because there were no other living relatives of the Smith family.
The defendant has been called the “Blue Moon Killer” because at the time, the local sheriff described the slayings as “ritualistic” and apparently coincided with a semi-rare blue moon.

Instead of firing her, why wasn’t she ordered to get into a program to get off drugs? Those programs are very helpful, and a good employer would have done that. Suspend her for six months, without pay, something like that, to ensure she gets help. But to outright fire her, no, I don’t like that. I’ve worked for employers, who have done that, kind of thing, for their employees. Good employers help their employees, first, before firing them. Unless, of course, this isn’t the first time she’s been caught stealing drugs. My hat’s off to her, for admitting, in public, she has a problem. She may be able to learn to control it, but she’ll always have a problem with drugs.

And I think that it is also because her actions could have had all sorts of defense attorneys trying to reopen cases ( I know, she said she only had taken stuff from non criminal cases but a door might still be opened for an attrorney ) and she could have put in jeopardy the work of many people and the credibility of the entire department.

Prosecution pretty much had to make public Christine's addiction, and when her trouble started, to show it was after the time of these murders. Otherwise, the defense would have tried to say she was incompetent when she took the evidence. I think they have to bring it up as there’s a huge difference between doing your job sober and doing your job high. Plus taking evidence would change things. For example if someone broke in and was a drug addict and had taken all the prescription drugs there etc. I don’t mean this in any way against her but for people asking why her drug addiction has to be brought up. She did very well. I still don’t believe Donald Hartung did this though. Will keep watching to see if there’s any evidence that will convince me.

It was a fun house, especially inside! This case goes to show how unpleasant the consequences can be of ousting, alienating, excluding someone from a family, especially a close member (usually a son). The perpetrator was the only son who not only did not manage to be successful (having financial consequences for him) but also had been PRIMARILY excluded from his mother's will (the mother reportedly being more or less a millionaire) and it seems he was logged down upon despite acting as care taker. The trick was that if all these three people died, the perpetrator would be the only one to inherit even if he wasn't in the will. Also not having a chance on inheriting anything (the mother was already elderly) whilst he was the only one who really would have needed it may have added to him feeling treated unfairly and may have arisen feelings of hatred in him. It likely was a primal cause in this multiple murder case.
