I git the Bluray out of the $5.99 bins Best Buy used to have. But I saw this back in the day being a big fan of most of tge cast. A stacked cast at that. And somehow, the two friends both ended up in the MCU.
"So it's a code breaker." No. Its THE code breaker." That line always gave me chills, just the idea of recognizing you have uncovered something beyond anything that came before it.
To this day, a lot of people in infosec see Sneakers as one of the best hacker movies of all time. It holds up remarkably well because process is more important than technology, and because they go after the people in the way of their goals instead of the technologies (even when they attack technology to get through the people).
They even get the "McGuffin" right. It's incredibly unlikely (but not impossible) that someone might discover an advanced mathematical shortcut to 128-bit encryption, in which case all computer security would become meaningless. It wouldn't be fancy looking, it would just work. On everything. Meanwhile, every other "hacker" movie let you know you "got in" by showing lots of fancy graphics on your computer screen.
This movie is a hidden gem and been one of my favorites since it came out. So glad to see someone else giving it the appreciation it deserves. Good content, keep up the good work!
It's a mystery to me how this has been so 'hidden' over the years. Despite not caring much for this genre generally, I saw this in the theater on the merit of its cast, and raved about it, & showed it to all my friends.
This is a real sleeper of a movie, an underrated gem. A much more accurate representation of hacking and hacker culture than a Hollywood usually manages, all shot with the style of a classic 1970s heist movie
SNEAKERS!! One of the best ensemble films ever. All the stars nailed it, great story. So happy to see someone react to this and fun watching you do it. Thanks for posting!
If you want a MUCH darker treatment of this genre, check out Redford in Sydney Pollack's "Three Days of the Condor" (1975). Great film with a "villain" who is ... complicated.
@@notabritperse I think about that conversation every once in a while. The professional interest and respect from Joubert. Redford's weariness vs Jouberts calm acceptance of the world they're moving in. also ended up being a great seinfeld bit.
and really is one of my favorite spy movies. it's pretty much the ultimate spy movie when they open up the phone book. it's either phone number. listen to different places. that's pretty scary and even when they dial the number and it's just extensions now, that's pretty scary. It kind of gives you a real idea of espionage still to this day
The soundtrack was done by Branford Marsalis, reknowned saxaphonist in jazz and classical. He was giving the soprano sax a front seat in those compositions. His whole family is rich with huge musical talent.
"Charm" was a good word to describe this film, which very well could have been a generic "Mission Impossible" kind of spy thriller. The comedy really cuts the tension without watering it down. The "Ocean" films had more style and swag, but this film has a lot of charm.
@@JamesVSCinema I would recommend doing a reaction to the Wild Thornberrys Movie (2002) if you haven’t seen it already. It is an instant favorite if you like animals like rhinos and elephants, and it shows how these animals need to be protected from poachers. Have you seen it before?
This is one of my favorite movies growing up. It is an amazing spy/heist movie. The Original Ocean's Eleven from 1960 set the gold standard for "heist" films, so it undoubtedly influenced Sneakers in 1992. Then, in turn, Sneakers went on to be an influence on the 2001 remake of Ocean's Eleven, so it does come full circle. Yes, it is a coincidence, but no, it is not JUST a coincidence. 😬 This is easily in my Top 10 favorite films ever, btw. Glad you enjoyed it!
I really appreciate the evolution of your reaction to this movie. Sneakers is a long-time favorite of mine and the fact that it "snuck up on me" when I saw it for the first time was a great cinematic experience.
YES! This is in my top 10 favorite movies, but almost no one has heard of it. Haven't even watched yet, just wanted to say thanks for doing this film and I love your channel. The best to do it. You're not just doing the big popular films but the important and thought provoking ones too. Thank you.
This is the film where I fell in love with David Strathairn's (Whister) acting. If you haven't seen The Memphis Belle or Good Night, and Good Luck then I can't recommend them enough. He gives a compelling performance in both, well worth the watch.
Thanks so much for doing this one! It was popular and successful, but somehow hasn't become the "classic" that it deserves to be. And although lots of movies go for an all-star cast, this has to be one of the most powerhouse casts ever: EIGHT Academy Award nominees (two of them winners)... Sidney Poitier, Robert Redford, Mary McDonnell, Dan Aykroyd, River Phoenix, Ben Kingsley, David Strathairn, and then James Earl Jones dropping in unbilled at the end. And they all bring their A-game to the witty dialogue. Not that it matters for us the viewers, but by all reports the cast had a blast working together, as they had all been fans of each other's work and don't generally get put into an ensemble like this. The director afterward said the only way it could have been more fun is if the lab lost all the film, so they could make it all over again.
I was so happy to see you were watching Sneakers, It's long been one of my favorite 'caper' films, and hardly anyone I know has seen it. I'm glad to see you seemed to like it too. You mentioned War Games in your commentary - Sneakers was written by the same 2 guys who wrote that a decade earlier. And it was made by the guy who did Field of Dreams. I've long thought of this as a forgotten gem of a movie, which is kind of surprising considering all the A-list talent. I'm so glad you're giving it visibility, may you help more folks discover it.
Yes! I was so happy to see this come up as a reaction. It's a great movie that is really underrated. I love the characters and the teamwork, how they work thru each problem, and how we get to see them find the solution. One of my favorites was how they figured out where Marty had been taken based on the sounds he heard, and then to see it come together as they were driving over the bridge was just awesome! The score was also really well done. Simple, but it really underscored the moments when tensions rose, or a shoe dropped. Very re-watchable ♥ I'm glad you enjoyed it! ~Caroline
So Dr. Janek is played by Donal Logue (one of his first roles) who was also in Blade (as Quinn, the Henchman to Frost) and much later played Harvey Bullock in Gotham. He's had quite a career. Also RIP River Phoenix as this was one of his last movies.
This film has such an amazing cast. The acting and story are so smart. That scene with Ben Kingsley and Robert Redford sitting in that stark white set is truly my favorite part of the movie. It's like the set dressing's minimalism made it easier to focus on the absolute masterclass in acting that was going on between these two men. It's like the director said, "Go on, gentlemen. Show off for us."
One of my longtime favorites. Glad you gave this one a chance James. They just don't make films like this one anymore. Great ensemble cast and a storyline that keeps you guessing.

Seriously, for me, this film has the best replay value, of any film. I think it's the pacing, location, music, ensemble, subject, and a balance of humor and suspense. It may be, my favorite film.
I can't tell you how happy I was to see the thumbnail, man. I remember mentioning this movie to you a while back when Sidney Poitier died. Fantastic movie, criminally underrated. I'm so glad you enjoyed it.
In the scene with Ben Kingsley and Robert Redford sitting in a booth they are sitting on a Cray supercomputer that cost around $35 million in today's money. In many ways it was less powerful than today's smartphones though designed for a much different computations.

Anyway, great reaction, made me feel a little bit like I used to feel watching this film with my mom. 💗
Yes ! My favourite heist movie of all time !!! So glad you're reacting to this, and yes - THIS is the BEST way to watch a film - not know anything about it. If possible - not even who's in it. Just get a rec from someone you trust and go watch the film ! Excited to watch your reaction :)
This movie is SO underrated. With having the big star power and great writing, it should have done much better at the box office. The elements of suspense, humor, and action was done perfectly. Glad you all the references, even the older ones.
I'm a film maker too and I've loved this movie since I was a little kid and it was hugely influential to me so it's so great to watch someone discover it for the first time. I'm definitely gonna check out more of your videos.
One of favourite elements to this films is James Horner's amazing score. It heightens everything in the films so well. It's one my favourite scores of his.
This film works as one of the best spy films, hacker films and heist films. Very well cast, acted, written, directed and edited. Criminal how little attention this film gets.
I was 16 when I got my first movie theater job, 1992. I remember vividly “sneaking” into this movie and a League of Their Own in ‘92 w/popcorn or fully loaded nachos on my 15min or half hour breaks to sit in on any part of either movie, little did I know that movie reactions on TH-cam would be ‘a thing’ some 30 years later. I did it the OG way, for minimum wage! This movie in particular was perfectly cast (Sydney Poitier, for goodness sake!?!), superbly directed and tightly written. Tech in every kind of spy film is going to be outdated the minute it gets released, but for all the reasons you’ve highlighted so wonderfully in this reaction, the movie itself stands up on a plateau for artistic and cinematic chops. Great choice by James’ Patreon!🎥
I saw this in the theater when I was in high school (I think we were freshmen) and loved it. In fact, I think a couple of us went back a short time later and watched it a second time, which is something I never did back then. I've been in the IT industry for over 20 years, so I would naturally be predisposed to enjoy movies like this, but even so I still think it's one of the best of its type. I can remember where we saw it, who I was with, and the fact that we snuck in candy and cans of Mountain Dew. My friends and I still quoted this movie years later...mostly Dan Aykroyd's conspiracy theory lines (cattle mutilations, etc.), but also, to this day any time the subject of a passport comes up I still think of this movie. Amazing cast, great storytelling, memorable dialog...you really can't go wrong.
I genuinely love this movie and have loved it since I saw it on release in 92! The cast is incredible and the execution is just brilliant...accurate too with how they do what they do for a living. It was excellent to be able to watch this with you
Seeing you enjoy this film, noticing not only the talent, the cinematography, the pacing... and on top of all of that, this is about as close as it gets to real computer security. And then there's the music. One of the best film scores I've ever heard. James Horner's compositions and Branford Marsalis's woodwinds... icing on the entire cake.
Awesome selection! Such an underrated and under-known classic. Great comedy, excellent story and one of the best ensemble casts outside of an MCU team-up. 👍
Yay, I recommended this awhile ago. Glad you watched it. I love when Whistler says “remind me to make you an honorary blind person”. Every character is great and unique. Also, this has the lamest movie poster of all time, especially considering the high caliber cast.
I watched this when it came out. I watched it the other day, and it's remarkable how well it holds up. A lot of that is due to the amount of acting talent, I mean Robert Redford, Sidney Poitier, Dan Aykroyd, River Phoenix, Ben Kingsley, James Earl Jones, Mary McDonnell... And then you have supporting actors like David Strathairn, Eddie Jones, Donal Logue and Timothy Busfield on top of that. It's really quite amazing, tbh.
The math behind this movie is solid too. If someone came up with the method described in the film, a hell of a lot of encryption would be no better than tissue paper wrapping. More so in the early 90s when this was made, we're a little more diverse these days, so you wouldn't have the keys to the entire kingdom. I also appreciate that this movie, like Ghostbusters, let Dan Ackroyd's personal interest in conspiracy theories and the occult shine through in his character. The line "Cattle mutilations are up" cracks me up every time.
This film is a work of beauty, with a score that rises to the level of a masterpiece. It stands as one of the most visually stunning creations of our era, while also boldly tackling the prescient themes of technology, power dynamics, and the manipulation of information, positioning itself ahead of its time.
'Sneakers' is a great, but slept on, classic of a movie. Redford is great at the clandestine stuff. His movie "Spy Games" with Brad Pitt was also really exceptional (and severely slept on).
I’m so glad I’ve seen a couple reactors doing this movie lately. I loved this movie when I saw it in theaters as a kid and it holds up incredibly well today. It’s a shame it’s been mostly forgotten.
I didn't remember anything about that move, even though I loved it back in the day. Except for one scene: When they gave their wish list at the end! That was such a great payoff!
Yes. That is indeed the voice of Darth Vader. And Simba. James Earl Jones. The other actor you recognized is Ben Kingsley. You've likely seen him in numerous movies. I SO love this movie! It's one of those movies I've watched so many times I pretty much have it memorized. Here's the thing about Ocean's 11: It's a remake. 1960, directed by Lewis Milestone, and starring five of the Rat Pack: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop.
Mary McDonnell is a criminally underrated actress. I can’t think of a single thing I’ve seen her in where she wasn’t top notch. I saw this in the theater. Loved it then and it still holds up. Ben Kingsley also doesn’t suck, ever. Check out Sexy Beast. He’s otherworldly great and terrifying in that.
Great reaction, and I'm glad you enjoyed! I have a soft spot for movies and shows that treat the audience as intelligent & don't water things down "like we're five," lol. I'm not insulted when I have to play catch-up. Thank God for the age of rewind. :-) Such a terrific cast on this one. Redford had an incredible 25-year run between '67 and '92. One homer after another. Have you seen Three Days of the Condor?
Very happy to see you react to this, James. Fun movie with a stacked cast. Listening to your outro now and wondering if you realize who played Cosmo ;-) A couple movie references for the two henchmen... if you haven't seen them Eddie Jones... A League Of Their Own (I think you've seen it) Timothy Busfield... Field Of Dreams ...and to complete the baseball triple-play, Robert Redford in The Natural All with some heart 🙂
I have a very weirdly vivid memory of watching this movie for the first time, because when it came out on VHS, this was one of the first two movies we watched on the brand new (and apparently highly upgraded) VCR my parents had bought. We watched it back to back with A League Of Their Own, which is funny because one of the two shady "agents" in this also plays Marla Hooch's father in that movie, so somehow we broke in our new VCR with two movies featuring the same character actor.
Before Oceans11, Mission Impossible, as well as so many other espionage films. This movie truly combines drama with comedy. It keeps the audience on our toes without becoming predictable, and still giving us an ending that we can smile at. On a more serious recommendation. Would live to see the patterns vote over some other films like Miracles starting Kurt Russel about the1980 Olympics, or even Everest. Starting a whole lot of people about climbing that mountain many decades ago
You saw Ben Kingsley in "Schindler's List". He's also played a villain in a couple of Marvel movies. Breakout role was "Gandhi" which you need to see sometime. Epic.
Glad you watched this great, somewhat older film. This came out in 1992 and Ocean's 11 came out in 2001. I'm a bit surprised - I thought they were more like 20 years apart, not just about 10. LOVE both movies though as well! Great reaction as usual. Loved your reaction to the amazing film, Deliverance too. Tough watch though - but still makes me want to go back and watch it - as it's been quite a few years.
A bit of a forgotten 'classic'. Love the casting in this film. Also, have to add that @20:51, all I could hear was 'They call me 'Mr Tibbs!'. Watching this reminded me that you should try to look at Sidney Poitier's 'In the Heat of the Night' trilogy, if you haven't already done so. Peace All
Oh man, what a great flick! The cast is heavily laden with stars! The soundtrack adds to the delicious tension. My girl Mary McDonnell is such an amazing actress, I wish she got more props. Oh man, I'm really happy you did this one. Who ever has been recommending to you is on a hot streak. Love ya!
McDonnell (ahem, MY girl, lol) and Strathairn were great together the same year in Passion Fish. I always like Strathairn's work, usually a no-nonsense kinda character. He was minimal in Fracture, but still so effective.
Had a great time with this one. Love it when films truly surprise me!

Anyway, great reaction, made me feel a little bit like I used to feel watching this film with my mom. 💗
an underrated gem of a film
This might be one of my favorite unknown movies. The cast is fire, the writing and pacing are great, it's just a fantastic and fun movie.
Such an underrated movie. Noone talks about it. I love it
Its about the Oscar. The cast featured 3 Oscar winners and 5 Oscar nominees. Always a fun watch.
This movie is so underrated. The screenwriter/director also wrote/directed Field of Dreams. He deserves more credit.
“It could be comedy, it could be crime, it could be psychological”
YES
“Where are you from?” One of the greatest actors ever… Ghandi, Schindler’s List, some British gangster movie.
'Heat' (1995) is also a great heist movie. Very different tho.
Some other '80s greats: 'The Right Stuff', 'Das Boot', 'Blue Thunder', 'Black Rain'.
Oh, Das Boot is amazing!!!
Clicking the thumbs up before I even start watching this reaction. One of my favorite older movies.
This is one I've been watching since high school, and I never got tired of it!
It's a shame this film wasn't so well received at the time, it is truly great.
My all time favorite spy/heist movie! I can't even tell you how many times I have seen it, but it must be in the double digits.
This film is a work of beauty, with a score that rises to the level of a masterpiece. It stands as one of the most visually stunning creations of our era, while also boldly tackling the prescient themes of technology, power dynamics, and the manipulation of information, positioning itself ahead of its time.
One of my favorite movies ever! Thanks for the reaction!
'Sneakers' is a great, but slept on, classic of a movie. Redford is great at the clandestine stuff. His movie "Spy Games" with Brad Pitt was also really exceptional (and severely slept on).
Wow! So happy to see you react to this movie! Soo good! Loved it since it came out! What a cast! Great reaction!
Saw it when it came out as a teenager and it's still one of my favorite movies.
This is an underrated classic.
The writer/producers of the film, Parkes and Lasker, also gave us WarGames (1983) another great technothriller.
The kid who jumped through the ceiling tiles was River Phoenix, Joaquin Phoenix's older and more talented brother. RIP.
This is a great one. I love how, like you said, every bit of info they get is earned.
Mufasa, not Simba :)
He’s otherworldly great and terrifying in that.
my mom put me on this movie when i was young. so cool you found it. its a fun movie for sure
Yeah this has always been a favorite of my, great movie that's not known to well by the majority of people. Rip River Phoenix
Yes! This is such a great capper film. Great cast. Great Soundtrack
Very happy to see you react to this, James. Fun movie with a stacked cast.
Listening to your outro now and wondering if you realize who played Cosmo ;-)
A couple movie references for the two henchmen... if you haven't seen them
Eddie Jones... A League Of Their Own (I think you've seen it)
Timothy Busfield... Field Of Dreams
...and to complete the baseball triple-play, Robert Redford in The Natural
All with some heart 🙂
I have a very weirdly vivid memory of watching this movie for the first time, because when it came out on VHS, this was one of the first two movies we watched on the brand new (and apparently highly upgraded) VCR my parents had bought. We watched it back to back with A League Of Their Own, which is funny because one of the two shady "agents" in this also plays Marla Hooch's father in that movie, so somehow we broke in our new VCR with two movies featuring the same character actor.
I’m always so happy to see one of my favorite movies that very few people know about get discovered.
One of the best compliments to older films is if they hold up in modern times. 30 years later this film still feels next level for some reason.
Epic.
Mary McDonnell on the date with Stephen Toblowsky is GOLD.
_Sneakers_ is one of the best films of the 1990s. A perfect movie, it *should* remind you of _Wargames_ - it's from the same screenwriters.
Unsung classic of the 90s.
@@chefskiss6179 Captain Ashford and President Roslin... that's an explosive combo!
