I ran across your channel a couple of months ago and my wife started at the beginning and usually watch a couple of videos every evening. I got to say, we enjoy them very much. We used to love camping but finally gave it up when the kids grew up and didn't want to go anymore. Never did we ever get to camp in the places like you go. You are truly blessed to be able to roam the southwest and see so many wonderful places. You are not only very easy on the eyes but you are witty and downright funny. We enjoy your videos. Hey there Sarah.
Don't pay attention to the cheapskates and haters. You did a really nice thing for your sister. Life isn't worth much if you can't indulge yourself once in a while. You deserve it.
My wife and I stayed at the hotel back when it was named the Furnace Creek Inn. We stayed in a room that looked pretty much like the one you stayed in, but upstairs.
The one magical memory I have of the place happened by the pool. We went down for a night swim after dinner. It was a warm, full moon, September night. We had the pool to ourselves. Suddenly a huge dessert owl flew low over our heads, followed by another smaller one. They landed in one of the palm trees close by. It was a mother owl and her owlet. They were magnificent. We watched them in awe for quite a while.
We mentioned the owls to the desk manager and he confirmed that the owls had made a home there at the hotel.
It was a lovely stay at a place that I will always remember fondly.

Thamks for sharing a memory of mine. Spent a night here late '70's but in the dorms next to hotel. A girl friend of mine, her sister worked here. It was like the kids in the movie "dirty dancing".
daytime they worked in the hotel, in the evening in the dinning room. She was able to arrange for us to have dinner in the main dinning room. I was in my 20's at the time and this was way above my social and economic status. The kids would work here in during the winter season and then go to the Grand Cayon and work at the El Tovar hotel for the summer. I recall at the time the allure of coming here was getting away. a lot of Hollywood types would come. This was so remote no television signal, pre cell phones and no phones in the rooms. just an escape for the hustle and bustle. Enjoy going on your adventures. Thanks

To clarify, that hotel was formerly the Furnace Creek Inn but the building is now known as the Inn at Death Valley while the entire complex (including the associated Ranch, read on) is known as the Oasis at Death Valley. It is under the management of Xanterra. It had a major renovation in recent years, and we are planning to stay in the Inn's main building for the first time fairly soon. Last year we stayed on a completely different part of the property in one of their "casitas." They are all new and nicer than the rooms in the main building based on your video, (I think the room you showed was perfectly fine given the historic nature of the building). If staying in a casita you get a dedicated golf cart to ride around the place and back and forth to the main building and parking lot. The other hotel in the area, about a mile away and known as the Ranch offers a more casual experience, one that is probably better suited for a family with kids, and cheaper as well. Not as posh but with restaurant(s?), (can't remember if more than one) and a general store right there. We've stayed there when our kids were young and certainly recommend it as well.

Hi WH. I spent thousands of nights in a variety of hotel rooms, during my working days. The rooms were typically 80 to 100 bucks per night. Your room doesn’t appear to be much better than most that I stayed in, although the terrace and grounds look impressive). I think the higher price you paid is a reflection of the overall facility amenities and / or the local market for hotel accommodations (but not the rooms specifically). Good to see you & Sis having fun !! 😃

The point you're making is no different than saying that a 2021 Camry is a better value than a 1931 Duesenberg. True, but irrelevant when it comes to which one is the more special experience to have for a day or two.
There is a big difference between the cost of a place that looks like the room she got, and a place that IS like that. And definitely, location location location. Very few of the Marriotts, Sheratons, and even Hyatts I stayed in on business trips, in the 1980s/90s which I presume you're referring to, had genuine antique furnishings, etc. The main exceptions I can think of were the old Sheraton Palace in San Francisco; the Biltmore in Coral Gables (though the room walls were not at all soundproof); and the Mark Hopkins in San Francisco. I got an unbelievable $80 corporate rate there in the early 1990s, and it included a free drink up to $15 at a bar on a top floor. Prime location, old-money build quality, a real history behind it, etc.
The usual business-travel hotels are highly functional, but not hand built like a fortress. Nor did they have to pay employees to live in a remote location versus being able to choose from a variety of neighborhoods/demographics to live in. Running a high-class resort, in a remote location is not cheap. Recruiting and retaining good help is not easy for them.
The landscaping maintenance must be atrociously expensive, the physical plant due to the extreme climate must be especially expensive, bringing in contractors from a distance must be expensive, catering to whiny rich people has costs associated with it, etc. So, the room layout and quality is barely even a factor in what the place does or should cost. But I disagree with you about even the room quality part of it. It clearly is a more expensive room than modern chain hotel rooms, even ones which are more up to date, efficient, comfortable, etc.

@@EfficientRVer I think it's a bargain rate compared to the Ahwanee in Yosemite.

    • @EfficientRVer
      @EfficientRVer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@Mike Raffphone The American Club has a very different feel, and very different clientele, than the luxury hotels in Death Valley and Yosemite. Or at least it did when I was there in 1985. Nice getaway spot, fine for a corporate retreat or a recreational vacation. Lacking the National Park type of landscape, they have to pay much more attention to quality of service if that's what you're into. If they didn't have amazing service, rich folks would have no reason to go there. That's the opposite of the Inn at Death Valley or the Ahwahnee at Yosemite, which would be jammed with rich folks just for the location even if quality of service took a slide. Unlike in the sticks in Wisconsin, or super-desirable places like Jackson Hole, The Hamptons, or Miami Beach, there just aren't appropriate places to buy or build your own lavish house to stay in rather than the hotels.
I stayed at the American Club when Kohler was trying to lure my wife and I away from jobs in the Boston area. Certainly a great hotel, well run. It was a bit too much of a one-company town for us to want to own a home there, though, no matter how great a company it would be to work for.

    • @EfficientRVer
      @EfficientRVer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@cre8tvedge It depends upon how badly you want to stay at the best place in Yosemite, vs the best place in Death Valley. Yosemite is more beloved by more people, so it's hard to place a value on that.

Being a retired resort owner/manager this is one of my favorite Wonderhussy videos. Everytime I say that, you top it, bless you Wonderhussy. It it were my hotel you would have had it for half price, considering all you do and your golden heart. I used to thoroughly enjoy Drambuie but can't drink like that anymore, well maybe if I wet my lips with it and pretend I was kissing Wonderhussy it would be extacy. All the best, you deserve heaven on earth!

Really good video Sarah. You and your Sis both deserved a treat after all your hard work. My husband and I thought about staying at Furnace Creek in 2006, but it was $200 per night then and too much for us. There’s a really cool biography called Slim by Slim Keith/ Hayward/ Hawks and she tells about staying at Furnace Creek in the 1930’s and all the movie stars there.
    Have a great Christmas!!

In the late 60's early 70's there was a movie "Zabriskie Point" and I thought it to be a great movie. But until your video I didn't know there was a real Zabriskie Point. Thanks for educating an old man!

That looks pretty amazing. The price is high, but not ridiculous, considering its more than just a "room". Its beauty and history are well worth it. Hopefully I can get back out that way again, I'll put this on my "bucket list"

Wow, glad you paid 500.00 so I didn't have to. I am most impressed with the landscaping and the huge pool, although I hate to think they are the ones using all the water in the hot springs, wonder if they own the springs. Just think if they didn't own the springs you could go in it for free. Thanks for taking us along, it really is a cool looking place.

Late to this party, but I learned to love Furnace Creek Inn long before it’s name change. I was tasked with writing ad campaigns to lure SoCal weekenders to that incredible destination. Great challenge for a junior copywriter, but it worked and perhaps that’s why I have such fond feelings for the place. The windows looking at rocks? For daylight when electric lights were exotic. That spring feeds the date palms … they used to make date bread for the Inn’s dining room. The place was built for the US Borax executives as a getaway… or perhaps a bribe for getting them on site for extended periods. My best headline for Valentines weekend… Bring your date or eat ours here.
Apologies if this info is a repeat from another comment… I did not read them all. Thanks for the fun vids!

I am Not Surprised to hear you say that you splurged for your sisters sake more then your self. I would have been very shocked if you would have done this for your self more then another person. You seem to be a caring person. I hope that both of you had a good time. You both deserve a treat.

That’s the first thing I noticed were those beds! A dust ruffle or bed skirt would made them more attractive….but the point of the trip was to treat your sister to a nice evening and experience. I know y’all had a great time…

Love that hotel. We treated ourselves to a family Christmas vacation there in 2009 and it still looks as awesome and amazing as when we were there. We stayed on 2nd floor so we had the private balcony with extended view of the valley. Merry Christmas and thanks for helping me relive all those wonderful memories!

My late husband Karl did some rewiring up at the Furnace Creek Inn and also at the cafeteria at the ranch. Back in '79, the rooms were around $150 or $175, I think. That was 44 years ago, though. I miss living at the ranch, it was $35 a month for employee rent in '79 and in a shared cabin, and $70 a month for employees to rent a trailer space. Since my husband was the master electrician, we got free propane and electric for our trailer. We paid one low price for our meals also. I sure miss that. Very reasonable.

    Sarah,
You are a wonderful sister ,this is a treat for both of you.
The price amazes me, like you , if it clean and has the basics .. that, all we need.
No one is going to sit and read those books at those prices.. it ain't happening.
The property is thoughtfully landscaped and harmonious.
I really think they are catering to high rollers.
Someone wrote that you pay for the History/ambiance, OK????
Merry Christmas and an awesome New Year to to you'll, Miss Woodall:)
    Cheers,
    Rik Spector
