Very cool info about Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. I would love to visit a ghost town or anything resembling the Wild West. That scenery out there is awesome! Excellent video! You did a great job on sharing info.
@@earthandtime5817 lived outside of salt lake for a year but I wasn’t at a point in my life where I could have explored. I basically worked and came home. I do regret that in hindsight
What a great video! I love exploring historic places. Thanks for posting. You are not allowed to use the word actually for the rest of the year. You already met your quota on this trip - lol. Keep up the good work.
Wonderful video and narrative. Not meaning to be a spoilsport, but it wasn't the Sundance Kid that did the bicycle scene. It was Butch Cassidy portrayed by Paul Newman.
The saloon in Grafton was built for a movie, "In Old Arizona." It wasn't actually part of the town. It was a movie set. Also, the Alonzo Russell home was built for his wife, Nancy. He later also married her sister, Louisa. Thats who the wood house across the street was built for.
Paint pigments reflect the colours derived from the minerals mined, So for your iron pigments you have the red, yellow, and purple and sometimes blue ochres mixed into limewash for walls. Pigments are a mining industry in itself and may be pricier than the metals produced. No surprise to have green paint in a copper mining area. You express the reason I became a geologist and love it so much, and I tie it into my love of archaeology and history. Talking about geology and heritage with the public is one of the most important things we can do professionally, and it has importance in how we treat the planet in future.
Thank you so much for sharing. I appreciate it. I need to do an episode on minerals and pigments. It was a suggestion and a good one from a previous comment.
@@earthandtime5817 Coleford in the Forest of Dean UK had the large Milkwall Colour Works. The ochre was found in veins associated with thee iron ore mining. It was renowned for quality. This was pay for the miners who earned little enough in the early 19th and early 20th Century. Underground, you can see how keen they were to win colour. This mostly led me to university and getting my geology degree..David and Robert Mushet, a father and son team, carried out experiments in iron and steel production. These experiments led to the development of the first steel railway rails, previously these had been made from iron. Most of this ceased around 1870, and by 1960 little sign remained of these great industries at the forefront of the industrial revolution. How strange that this is contemporary with your history here, Worth you having a read on it.
@@earthandtime5817 We are hoping to be down there in May but we have a 6 month old German Shepherd that I'm not sure will be ready for a long road trip by then. If that ends up being the case, we will reschedule for September/October.
You have the history of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid movie is wrong. My husband's family lived there and his grandpa was born in the house, next to the barn that was also his Great Grandfather's barn. They actually built the house for the movie and it was burned down years after that. The big grave stone in the grave yard was George Washington Gibson and was a relative of my husband. If you want more history, there is a group that is refurbishing the town and has left information in my husband's great grandfather's house. They would be happy to help you, or my husband can give you some of the history of the town.
Thank you for sharing your story and more about the history of the movie. It is an amazing place with a beautiful backdrop. I would love to reach out to the historical society there and learn more about the history of the area. Thanks for the suggestion. Appreciate the comments.
Thanks for the comment. For me I think of myself as a tour guide when I do these videos. I use my hands to show what and/ or where I am talking about. This hopefully helps people focus where they should. I do appreciate the comment and will work on being cognizant of hand/ finger placement.
Hope you enjoyed todays episode! I really enjoyed exploring the Ghost Towns of Southern Utah. Do you have a favorite ghost town?
My Grandpa Bengt Nelson, helped build the kilns.
Thanks for sharing and commenting! What a cool tie your family has to the history of Iron County :)
