  • Fatigue - When a material is subjected cyclic loading, it can fail at stresses well below the material’s ultimate strength. This is known as fatigue failure and accounts for the vast majority of mechanical engineering failure worldwide. Fatigue failure occurs due to the formation and propagation of cracks, which usually occur at free surface and at stress concentration. The number of cycles a material can endure is highly dependently on the amplitude of the stress cycle. An example of the stress cycles in show in Figure 1, where the amplitude of stress is represented as the highest stress value of the sine cycle.
