Years ago, after reading about the wounding of Stonewall Jackson I began to wonder if it was the wound itself that brought about his demise. As General Jackson was being stretchered out after he had been wounded he was thrown to the ground twice. Anyone who has ever visited Chancelorsville and seen that area for themselves knows how dense some of the foliage and brush around there even to this day. When Jackson was wounded it was almost dark. As the stretcher bearers were removing him from the field and trying to get him to the medical tent one of the stretcher bearers got his foot tangled in some vines and he fell. When the stretcher bearer fell the stretcher twisted and Jackson fell hard to the ground as well. With the second fall an artillery shell struck close by and one of the stretcher bearers was killed from the shrapnel (I believe it was) almost instantly. When the stretcher bearer was killed Jackson fell to the ground and hit with even greater force than from the first fall. There was speculation that Stonewall Jackson was quite possibly hurt even further from at least one of these falls. Of course it is hard to say with any certainty but one can not help but wonder if General Jackson sustained broken ribs in at least one of these falls? Perhaps even a punctured lung? The only way to know would be to exhume Jackson's body and do a medical examination with modern technology and of course it is not really worth it to do so. But from a purely curious and (I hate to admit) macabre perspective one can only imagine what really killed Stonewall Jackson?😮
Wow. Thank you for sharing this. He must have really left a mark on the people around him. Your reading is impeccable and holds my attention. It puts me in the moment and almost puts me in that time. You're a gift, sir.
It was certainly a great loss for the south. One can only wonder what would’ve happened the first day at Gettysburg if he had been present. Ewell and Johnson had taken over the Stonewall brigade and stopped fighting, failing to take Culp’s Hill.
Looked like he had gentle eyes. I would believe he had a good heart. ALL humans r capable of making errors in beliefs but that doesn't make them evil. God judges our souls.
Good stuff. Appreciate you sharing. 😊
Thanks for bringing that to us. Well done.
